This thread reminds me of Toy Dinosaur Lady.
On another note, I find it curiously odd that certain people who claim to be men of science shut the idea of God out. May be he is, maybe he is not. But does that not contradict science? The quest for knowledge? No one got anywhere by saying "That is ridiculous and isn't real".

Can I just float an idea here? And please forgive me if it seems a tad naive but I think it has merit. What would be so wrong about religion embracing science instead of fighting so bloody hard against it all the time? I really don't see why anyone's belief in a creator should be compromised by doing so. The only thing that seems to get in the way is a book. It really does sadden me that many people in the world are brought up to believe that evolution is a dirty, great big lie, not 200 years ago but now, 2011! This is, I suspect, one of the reasons that Professor Dawkins gets so riled about religion. Science is certianly moving at a rather shifty rate of knots these days and I worry for the day when science discovers something that turns religion on it's head. Life is discovered elsewhere, what then? What would that mean for the 'God created man in His own image' thing? By that rationale are we to presume that aliens are 'not in Gods image' and therefore spawn of the devil? It seems to me that if religion doesn't update it's belief's and have a good think about it's willingness to embrace modern science, we could be in for a world of hurt, big time.

I mean, if we're being technical about education, I have far more of it regarding philosophy and religion than Dawkins does, and I think his philosophy is somewhere between the ranting of an angsty teenager and the kid who talks too much in class.

Well, religion isn't a thing which has beliefs, but the religions which people believe in do change; albeit slowly. In all likelihood the idea of the Trinity will be regarded just like Olympus is now.
To answer the question though: conflict, which is good or bad depending on which side you happen to be on at the end.

You raise a good point. And yes, strictly speaking you are quite right but if you are referring to Prof Dawkins then I have something to add. He is not going round screaming "GOD DOES NOT EXIST!" While it's true that he is an aethiest and has spoken about this on a number of occasions (as is his right), this isn't the reason why he dislikes religion so much. It's because it has been the reason for so many deaths over the years and he also believes that religion is a major impediment to the advancement of science. I have nothing but admiration for the guy, he is one of the worlds leading champions of science and history will vindicate him to all the haters. Resistance ..Is...Futile!

The problem is that religion doesn't really impact science at all. There are rare occasions, like stem cell research, but for the most part these are just hiccups along the way.
Morality restricts science too, believe me. I would love to take 300 million people and force them into political experiments in order to prove some of my theories, it would make my life much easier. However, my, albeit weak, sense of right and wrong leads me to not advocate doing so. Also, they probably wouldn't listen anyway.
Either way, the point is that restricting science isn't necessarily bad, and religion isn't the only thing that does it. Hell, even scientists restrict science by virtue of being humans with egos.
Or is that eggos?

Sigh. When ever the whole "Does God exist" question comes up, everyone always seems to overlook the fact that in order to debate whether or not something exists, you need a definition for the thing that all sides can agree on. Well, last time I checked no one could really agree on a definition for God, thus there can be no argument as to whether or not he/she/it exists!
Ha! Thread over!

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. I believe in God. And he isn't dead. He has left us this planet to take care of it. Humans just hate each other for their opinions and their race.
Religion may start wars, but so would everything else if there was no religion. Lets take this as a situation...
There are bunch of Atheists, one side says "I love Cake." The other side says "I hate cake." The two sides will hate each other, and one day they will start to fracture their friendship and they all kill each other as it spirals down.
Religion is just a reason to fight and kill people sadly. That i do not agree with.

I've never agreed with Religion in general, not just Christianity, but all Religion.
I just don't see the need for it, it just seems like a crutch for the weak-minded that need to know some omnipotent being that may or may not actually be there is behind them at all times.
I've thought all my life that in my moment of death, however it happens, I will never pray to God to send me to Heaven.

I see it that people would be all around stronger in mind and body if they didn't have to rely on Religion to confirm their beliefs, or decide them for them all together.
Like I said, it just seems like a crutch for people who don't want to, or can't, think for themselves.

You know. Having hope is good. Its not a road to disappointment.
To the unfaithful it does. Because people haveto believe in things. Either it be guidelines, laws, rules, or a code.
And some people do think to themselves. helk i have read indepth into the bible it has said "It is okay for you to stray and think and doubt if there is a god."
