Because I like to believe that there is an afterlife. Because nothing after death is just disappointing to me.
You remind me of someone I know who upon being questioned why he needed to believe in an afterlife, said that without an afterlife there was no point in living. Which I can't my head around at all.
Whereas I believe that without an afterlife you should make the very best of your time on Earth, he thought that without heaven, life was entirely pointless because once you're dead it would have just amount to nothing.
The best thing is not to believe in an afterlife, concentrate on living, and if there is something afterwards, take it as a pleasant surprise.

Nah, I believe in an Afterlife and I believe that good things will become of you if you help other people.
Of course I follow Chiviliary so I really don't care what others opinions are about god, I know he is out there, I can't prove it, but I will do my duty to god and country.
Just because I believe in the afterlife doesn't make me think "I can't wait to die!"
Its not really like that it is something good to know that it is my reward for helping others. thats about it. I've been raised in a Lutheran family so we are very less strict with choosing our paths.
But anyway my opinions will be dismissed because I believe in a god.

Believe in an afterlife if you want to, but remember that you only have one life which is certain, and you are currently digging into the time you have to live it.
Don't waste your earthbound life planning for what comes after it; you'll either have an eternity to do it when you get there, or you'll have wasted your life on something that does not exist.
Worry not how you will live your next life, but instead how you're living your current one.

I think a better question would be, "How do you define "God," and do feel if this definition continues to be relevant in our modern society?" And I want that to be at least two pages and double spaced with 1 inch margins, please.

Just a few statements that I would like to respond to. 1) Having hope is good. That's a very broad statement that could cover anything. However, if I was a ruler of my own country and an enormous asteroid was a week or two away from hitting our planet with dead certianty, and my people asked me about I would tell them not to worry as it would miss us. I would do this because there would be nothing to gain by being truthful and I would leave them to live their last few weeks in peace. But on the other hand, if a dying man asked me if he was dying I would tell him the truth because there would come a point where he would realise the truth for himself and I wouldn't want to be responsible for crushing his soul. Giving hope when there is none can be very cruel. I will tackle the other questions in another post because I'm doing this on my mobile and it's really tricky.

I'm open to the possibility of an afterlife but if there is one that still wouldn't prove that God exists. If if there is indeed an afterlife then there would be a science to it, making it as 'real' as our own Universe. Question 2) If a religious person performs a good deed so that they may reap the benefit in the hereafter and an athiest performs a good deed also, who's deed is the most altruistically motitivated?

If they're doing it specifically for post death favours then the atheist would be more altruistic.

That is a really sad way to look at things. Hope is a great thing for people to have. If a loved one is diagnosed with a disease your telling me that you dont hope they will be ok? You dont hope they could pull through no matter how low the odds? I think your trying to convince yourself saying things like that.
I also dont think having faith in something makes you ignorant or that you need a crutch. That sounds like your projecting

Why do Religious people DEMAND protection and equality, but then they are willing to MURDER someone for doing what they do? How can you preach about the right to dissent and then butcher people in the streets for doing so?
