Really, WOW! Assault rifles get pretty powerful then.

No. Assault rifles are pretty much autoguns.
Also I would prefer a lasgun, especially a hotshot lasgun.

Hotshot lasguns lack the extremely high rate of fire that standard lasguns have (this was the excuse GW gave so that hotshots couldn't use first rank fire, second rank fire.)

I'd personally prefer the high rate of fire, I'm not attacking tanks with a lasgun in any form.

Wouldn't be attacking a tank with an autogun either.
Also, I think the main reason for them ruling hotshot lasguns could not use FRFSRF is so you do not do that to a AP3 lasgun.
I also think a lasgun, in the fluff, would do more damage then an autogun.

Actually, I have always wondered why infantry would shoot at a tank with small-arms fire in the first place.

Small arms can get lucky, usually only with plasma guns and meltas, but still, lucky is lucky and a dead tank is a kill-point.

Uh...well, I'm not about to go shoot a tank with a M4 or AK. Thats the point I was getting at. I have no idea why troops would shoot at a tank with weapons that have no possibility of doing anything.

In real life, against older, cheaper...worse tanks, there is a chance of shooting through a driver's windscreen or someother access port, it's better than nothing. Rushing a tank might not be useful but it might just raise friendly onlooker's morale just enough to tempt a larger offensive.

Well except for open-topped...

also, anything with firepoints would be fair game for a miracle shot.

Plus, with lasguns, if you get enough VoF, the metal wouldn't be able to disperse that much heat, and could be melted through. Get enough lasguns and you've got ~lascannon.

By tank I mean a MBT.

For the second, you could do that, but the only time I have heard of something similar to this is in the book Ice Warriors, when a full squad of Valhallans took out a Sentinel Powerlifter by shooting its leg joint.
However, this was, as stated before, a full squad, and they pretty much used up their entire magazines. And that was just to take out a simple joint, not a solid piece of armor.

Ahhh, I remembered that certain lasguns have variable output, and that Lucius pattern lasguns used by the DKOK have extremely high outputs that use up most of the mag in each shot, those could do the trick, of course this only exists in the fluff...

If it is all one has, then go for it.
I still think it is folly doing so

well yeah, but as the imperial guard say, "if all else fails: duck. As a defensive stratagem it's unreliable, but incredibly reassuring for a moment or two."

This probably falls under the same category.
