This is what you aren't grasping. You live your life by a certain unwritten moral code, a set of rules a sto what you see as "wrong", or "right." You appear to have at least an idea of how you will react to certain events. Some things you "just do."

Now try and imagine that that rule-book was written for you a century ago. You have been raised to follow it. Some things are "done", and some things are "not".

The difference is that your rulebook can be dropped or re-written whenever you feel like it, and the only person held to it is you.

Your suggestion that the Royal Family could just cry "Sod the protocol" is akin to an officer in a Guards regiment saying "Sod orders, lets do what we like." Even more so given that both Philip and Elizabeth served in the military themselves.

I suppose so. We'll have to agree to disagree then. I tend to be more...progressive.

When your family have a history and tradition going back to the birth of the nation, then you will probably find that "progressive" is relative. In aristocratic circles, its progressive that you can post assertions of assassination at a member of the Royak Family and NOT end up on charges of treason. And that's pretty recent. Last 40 or 50 years or so. When one IS the establishment, one moves at a glacial speed. Its just the way it is.

And you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all" Mario Savio

Speaking of Guards, did you know that even though they don't move the rest of their visible body the Royal Guards usually wiggle their toes so they don't pass out? Skeletal muscle is the primary pump for veins so if they don't move any muscles then the blood going down to their legs and feet tends to stay there and their oxygen supply gets smaller and smaller until they pass out.

That being said you should get her a gaming PC and a copy of Skyrim, get her started on the Imperial quest line to conquer Skyrim and she'll be pleased as a peach.

Wiggling toes and not locking your knees helped me.

Another fun fact, cats and humans share similar circulatory systems, one small difference is the presence of a saphenous artery in cats that's missing in humans and the order of the vertebral, thyrocervicall, and costocervical arteries.

Sounds made up, I'm going to need some proof. Preferably with animation.

You can actually go get a text book and read it, but since you demand a video of it and books are terrible when it comes to watching animations...

Yeah I know he is given a free pass for some reason by the mods who apparently have bought his whole "shoots from the hip/look what a cheeky Brit I am" shtick, but really, glass houses Mattyrm, glass houses...

Eh? When have I ever made a pithy reference to raping someone? I might have mentioned that Joey said he was going to rape me a few posts back, but that was because I found it funny, I certainly haven't "lol'd" about people being raped.

Regards a free pass!? I get banned every single time I make a sweeping statement about the followers of Mohammed, which means Ive had about 14 bans and I think 3 that lasted over 5 days.

I thought you would have noticed mate. You know, considering you constantly badger me and are utterly unable to see humour in anything I write even if it is clearly ridiculously outlandish and not a statement of fact.

I have seen a few soldiers faint from standing still too long like.. sounds feasible, though I've not heard that myself.

Lets see shall we?

Naval service
After leaving Gordonstoun in 1939, Prince Philip joined the Royal Navy, graduating the next year from the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, as the top cadet in his course.[18] He was commissioned as a midshipman in January 1940. Philip spent four months on the battleship HMS Ramillies, protecting convoys of the Australian Expeditionary Force in the Indian Ocean, followed by shorter postings on HM Ships Kent, Shropshire and in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). After the invasion of Greece by Italy in October 1940, he was transferred from the Indian Ocean to the battleship HMS Valiant in the Mediterranean Fleet.[19] Amongst other engagements, he was involved in the Battle of Crete, was mentioned in despatches for his service during the Battle of Cape Matapan where he controlled the battleship's searchlights.
Philip was also awarded the Greek War Cross of Valour.[18] Duties of lesser glory included stoking the boilers of the troop transport ship RMS Empress of Russia.[20]
Prince Philip was promoted to sub-lieutenant after a series of courses at Portsmouth in which he gained the top grade in four out of five sections.[21] In June 1942, he was appointed to the V and W class destroyer and flotilla leader, HMS Wallace, which was involved in convoy escort tasks on the east coast of Britain, as well as the allied invasion of Sicily.[22] Promotion to lieutenant followed on 16 July 1942. In October of the same year, at just 21 years of age, he became first lieutenant of HMS Wallace and one of the youngest first lieutenants in the Royal Navy. During the invasion of Sicily, in July 1943, as second in command of HMS Wallace, he saved his ship from a night bomber attack. He devised a plan to launch a raft with smoke floats that successfully distracted the bombers allowing the ship to slip away unnoticed.[22] In 1944, he moved on to the new destroyer, HMS Whelp, where he saw service with the British Pacific Fleet in the 27th Destroyer Flotilla.[23][24] He was present in Tokyo Bay when the instrument of Japanese surrender was signed. In January 1946, Philip returned to the United Kingdom on the Whelp, and was posted as an instructor at HMS Royal Arthur, the Petty Officers' School in Corsham, Wiltshire.[25]

Yes, you are right, clearly Philip did absolutely bugger all even vaguely heroic.

By comparison: Stood on a cancer ward? Even I've done that. Not heroic.. Carefully probed for mines in a pre-cleared section of mine-field? I'll wager there are posters on this thread (the OP perhaps) who have done it with real live ones, perhaps even under fire, not surrounded by the fawning press. Not to do her a disservice, but there is more than one definition of "heroic" and I suspect that even Diana would agree that the poor little sods with cancer/missing limbs/AIDs are a damn sight more heroic than she was.

I think we had a big thread about that once upon a time.... define "heroic" for me.

It seems to be one of the most overused words ever, because I dont see how people who do the jobs they are paid to do are "heroic" personally.. you know, like firemen and cops and soldiers, and especially fething footballers who manage to win a trophy!

I have a feeling saying this to you will make you want to chainfist me but...
No one forced someone to be a fireman, soldier or a bobbie.
These men/women went into the job knowing they will be set on fire oe shot and and get less thanks then the guy who caught a football at superbowl.

Well yeah of course, Im not saying they arent more worthy of your praise than a football player, but what Im saying is I think that a "heroic" action is something that, I don't know.. is totally selfless. Like soldiers and firemen are paid to do that stuff, so Its not heroic, Its in your job description.

I suppose I would define heroism as something that is of great risk to yourself to help someone you didnt need to help. Like say, a bloke walking home from the shops who sees a woman in a burning building and he runs in and saves her at great risk to himself, just because he is a good guy.

At the same time I don't see how a fireman would be in that same situation, because that's what he is supposed to do!

A fireman who does it is a good fireman, if he refuses to do it, he wants sacking!

We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.

Funnily enough calling other posters vermin and making cracks about their grandmother dying and your subsequent actions then, go pretty far over the line with regards to rule #1.
