My entire view of the world is changed... The great grot leader has actually painted a living ork? And not only that but it’s wearing the rebellion’s colors?

Some nice army shots there, Ck - which of the WIP stuff do you intend to finish painting first?

I have been waiting for your army shot, no disappointment, they look grand. Now get some paint on that Morkanaught!

schank23: thanks! The blue is based off space wolf grey, if you want to try and replicate it.

ChaoticMind: Always know your enemy

Gitsplitta: Thanks! It's definitely nice to see them all laid out like this, it's been a while; I really should try to get more games in.

Dysartes: Thanks! Next to be painted will probably be the dakkajet, since I already made a decent start on it; if I paint the blue, add lot sof damage and details, and paint the pilot, it might eventually get finished .

Yorkright: Thanks! And that's no 'naut, that's a stompa

Wild- love the army shots! As I look at it I can hear Oddball's voice (from the movie Kelly's Heroes) saying 'you could probably use some armor' as the Stompa dwarfs the landscape.

Yorkright: will do, just not right now

Meer_Cat: Thanks! Lovely reference

So, as promised, PIP pics of the dakkajet. Not sure i'll getmuch more done till ther 25th, since I'm making props for a children LARP, and... let' s just say not all crew are living up to expectations, so it's up to me to pick up the slack . Still, it was kindof expected. So, if you don't hear from me for a few days, no worries, I'll just be toiling away at different toys, namely nerf guns, and temples of doom, all child-sized

Piccies of the dakkajet:

I'll probably add a truckload of blue graffiti, since I feel it could use a little more blue. Still, the biggest colour blocks are on, now it's detailing time. But that may be for after the 25th, we'll see

Gitsplitta: thanks!

Camkierhi: thank you!

Yorkright: thanks man! It'll definitely be fun, the core crew is a fun bunch, w ejust need to get rid of some dead weight . What I'm building: 10 pirate pistols (nerf based), two 5-foot tall tribal statues that can shoot foam darts, some ponchos, pirate accessories, an enlarged smart-game for one of the quests, traps, temple accoutrements,.... Basically think pirates of the carribean meets south american/polynesian tribes . It's for very young kids (6-12 y.o.) who basically play 'themselves'. Each cycle of four LARPS, we choose a different theme, and this one is ppirates-themed .

inmygravenimage: thanks! The first time I saw the orange/blue was on george dellapina's speed freeks somewhere int he 90's or early nillies, though his was more yellow/dark blue. I do love the contrast it gives, makes the models pop and it's a 'lukky kolor'

Love the orange as always. But I think you should do some kind of ww2 pin up on the tail fin or some kind of squadron markings. Or if you have a symbol that represents your army would be cool to in the same blue.

Dr H: Like I've said before: In the grim darkness of the 41st millenium, there is only... orange!

schank23: thanks! I was thinking about blue flames on the plane, and/or graffiti. I like the idea of a pinup, but I'm afraid my paining skills are sorely lacking for that.

So.. swings and roundabouts, lately. Had a good time at the children's LARP we helped organize (we bult a temple with traps, amongs other things ), but rl kinda kicked in afterwards with deadlines etc. Adding insult to injury, my experiments with orange to find a repalcement colour haven't quite worked out. And to make matters worse, I decided in a moment of brainfartiness, to experiment on my doomchickens:

As you can see, nothing matches the wartrakk in the back. So, time for stroger measures: instar make a macharius solar orange equivalentNo mor emucking about?. the price held me back, but in the end, it's goign to save me so much frustration, that I'll happily pay the shipping, which is almost as much as the paint itself costs... Let's hope they can hold up their end of the bargain.

On the upswing part, I started painting the grot pilot for the dakkajet:

... which looks alot less grainy at his actual size...

And I recently got hold of a used BW from a friend who 'd found it lying around and dedided the bits from this thing were better if in my bits box (for the record: he was perfectly aware it was gonna get ripped apart, I explicitly asked him if it was OK). If you're reading this: thanks for the bits, Tom . To you, a disparate bunch of bitz; to me, the start of a big trakk

So, off to build a bit; painting is on hold till I can get a proper shade of orange. because GW are who discontinue paints. Suffice to say I need my modelling therapy

Looks to me (you'll have a better idea with it in your hand, photos an' all that) like your orange needs just a hint of red in it to match.
Possibly the already painted chickens could just do with a thin red filter applied all over. May save a whole re-paint.

Good job on the pilot.

Good bitz to build on.

I agree with Doc, CK- that orange on the Doom Chickens isn't that far off- a red wash/filter might do the trick....

I threatened a co-worker with a nocturnal visit from a Doom Chicken just the other day. He laughed at first, then looked thoughtful, then asked what a Doom Chicken was.....he'll find out!

Pilot is looking great, and I think Doc is probably right try a bit of red wash or glaze it will probably look very close.

Thanks for the support guys! I feel a bir stupid for experiment on the doomchickens, but then again, you only know how a colour look on the model...

Dr H, you were right on for orange: a red glaze helped out, excellent eye for colour! The rightmost rokkit's colour is as close as it gets. I'm going to continue painting that one, and wait for the instar order for the others. The leftmost one had a very different base colour , so that one will need repainting.

Piccie:

I also made a start on a big trakk, trying to keep it rougly battlewagon sized, since it seems to have the same footprint, give or take.

The top is going to exend about 2 cm above the plasticard, then I'll add crenellations for the grots to hide behind. The big turret will go n the back, with sponsons on the sides, and very low-slung cabin, trying to get that construction-vehicle vibe. Suggestions welcome as always!

Fascinated by the start of the build on the 'wagon- your plan sounds great. I want to finish up the command group I've started and then pick up the grot BA-64 in 1/48 scale again- I have an idea for a small vignette to try...

Full size Doom Chicken it is! My she-who-must-be-obeyed won't mind us borrowing the garage for a few weeks!

Gitsplitta: thanks! Let's hope you like how it's evolved

Meer_Cat: Looking forward to the grot! And let's hope I can keep you fascinated with the big trakk - as for life-sized doomchicken's: I was already running possible ways to build it in my head

Dr H: Agreed, I've grown a lot thanks to the good advice of my fellow dakka-dwellers; it's a very constructive place to frequent.

So, moved forward on the big trakk. I built up the sides and centre, and found a cockpit bit from a dakkajet in my bitz box that would make a perfect cockpit:

The other side got built up a tad more, with room for a sponson added.

the sponson will be kept movable, of course . It'll have a pin goin through all the way to the bottom:

You can see the pin sticking out underneath. Once finished, I'll cut it to a proper length. I need to thicken up the underside as well to give it a place to rest in.

Here's how it looks with the cockpit glass on:

And one with an improvised turret where the supaskorcha will go:

On the whole, I like the heavy backend of the model, but will probably add some small tracks right behind the cockpit to balance things out a bit. Things to do: add small tracks, build up the sides, build a supaskorcha - and add lots of detailing, of course.

Very nice. I like the overall outline of the battlewagon with the low cockpit. I think adding some leading tracks behind the cockpit will make it look a bit more stable. Are you planning on putting them directly below, or mounting bigger ones out to the side to make the cockpit look lower?

Been Around the Block

The battlewagon is looking very cool. It has a bit of a jet carrier vibe to it, having that large upper deck. I like how the anatomy of the wagon kit is rearranged with the exposed engine at the front and the cannon on the nose of the kit. It has an interesting impact on the feel of the model. Have you thought about adding only one track under the cockpit/neck of the wagon? A trip-track wagon might be awesome, and steering would be a real challenge.
