Gitsplitta: Thanks!

Yorkright: I needed a challenge and some craziness, this one fits the bill nicely

The Turnip Master: Thanks! and I agree that some more tracks were need to balance the big trakk out. I wanted to keep the cockpit free, feels better that way, keeps that 90's sci-fi vibe

TGG: thanks! And great minds think alike, I totally agree on the triple track idea. Check out the pics below for results

Meatshield: Thank you! I have to admit it's an important reson for me to play greenskins.

inmygravenimage: Thanks! I wanted to capture that nineties sci-fi vibe, looks like it worked out alright

kuczek40: Thanks!

So, piccie time! I finished up the other side and the top, and added a third track right behind the cockpit to make the model ook a tad more balanced. Once I've figured out the turret, I can start skinning up the big trakk.

I'm starting to wonder where to put the turret though, all the way back, or more in the middle of the model? Suggestions welcome!

The two options:

The two red bits on top are standing in for the railing I want to build around the top, making it look like it has *some* transport capacity - it's a big trakk after all.

And in other news: my instar "not macharius solar orange" arrived:

Glorious orange! . It'll need a few coats to cover properly, but it's the perfect shade. Makes me a happy grot! Also, even with the rather steep shipping costs (not their fault, just happens with international shipping), it's no more expensive than GW paints, and comes in a dropper bottle to boot. I'll be placing more orders in the future methinks

Really happy that you found the right shade of orange will make it easier to paint up this new vehicle. My choice for turret is to the back because that seems more orky, I see it rumbling across the battlefield firing shells and rocking the whole vehicle up and backwards. Plus with the new rules doesnt matter where the gun is you measure any where from the vehicle.

What an excellent build! Love how this is growing!

Yea! The third track looks good.

I gotta say, the first option, with the cannon more in the middle, looks more natural and gives different diorama options for modeling passengers on the deck. But I like it pushed back more for the wonkiness of it. Maybe leave enough of a lip in the back for a grot to sneak around.

Nice work on the build.

I'm feeling the turret at the back, don't know why. Might be something to do with the impracticality of it...

I vote rear, that way you can build and launch a defkopta from it. I suspect that “landing” in regards to any flying greenskin vehicle is more “it didn’t go boom ” and “ the pilot survived!”

Yup- mount the heavy gun to the rear of the fighting platform- this could be your first Robot Scorpion! All looking very good!

See, I almost would want to see that forward track replaced with spider legs, and mount the cannon up there- do a sort of hulking, crawling thing.

Wow, the big trakk struck a few chords apparently -makes me a happy grot

Yorkright: Absolutely; I agree that the location of the turret doesn't matter from a gaming perspective - for this edition, that is +1 for the back position noted

Meer_Cat: Thank you! +2 for the back!

TGG: Thanks . I'm not going to model on passengers on top, so that doesn't add to the equation. I agree thaty it looks more balanced with the turret in the middle, but on the other hand, at the back it visually counterbalances the low cockpit. +1 for both postions, going from your explanation

Supershandy: finishing stuff tends to take time with me - at least I'll be able to paint it in the proper colour now

Dr H: Thanks! +3 for the back I guess

inmygravenimage: Thanks? What's making the huge difference from the pervious pictures?. +4 for the back noted!

ChaoticMind: No plans for deffkoptas just now, but noted (and tucked away for future use ). +5 for the back.

Anvildude: I consider that, but if I went legs, I'd go all out, no tracks/legs combination. And I did consider mounting the supaskorcha right above the cockpit, but the area is not really wide enough for that. Plus, it's already built, so adding moving parts would have been pretty hard.

So, ladies and gentlemen, the votes for the turret position are pretty clear . SInce it was my original idea anyway, I figured I'd trust the good folks of dakka and go with the rear-mounted turret. I add a small square that fits nicely in the grooves between the armour plates on top, added a spacer so the turret would rotate easily, and then set to work on the actual turret:

I also started building up the side a wee bit. As it stands now, the trakk is really taking shape; I just need to add a small barrier around the top, and the silhouette is fully done. Now, it's adding details: hatches, fuel hoses, the top of the turret, cleaning up the supaskorcha... Should be fun after the frenzied figuring out how I could pull this off . The supaskorcha is still able to move up and down, but will need some more friction to stay in place, so I'm hoping paint will fix that. If not, I guess I'll have to glue it in place.

For those wondering how I built the turret: the trick is to use ribbing on the inside:

Measure twice, cut once! If these are off, your turret won't build up properly!

Now, off to watch some tv with the misses. See you later, and feedback is welcome as always!

Looks sweet! The heavy turret gun to the back of the fighting deck was the way to go- it is well balanced by the large sponsons and their guns, and the low cockpit forward draws the line out naturally.

Rock on!

Beautiful work. Just perfectly orky. Turret is looking fantastic. Mind you as to position, I think it needs a tower to make sure they can see.

It's a massive flamethrower... what do they need to see?

It's going to need an awful lot of fuel tanks and pressurisation cylinders festooned all over it to feed that greedy thing though. Or am I thinking too logically again?

Meer_Cat: thanks! I agree, the back of the deck makes it work. It may not be the most practical, but it'll be pretty

Camkierhi: Thanks Cam! I added viewing ports right above the supaskorcha so the gots inside can see what they're burnin'. Do you still feel it needs a turret now? I'm a bit concerned it'll break up the model's lines, but always want to add a measure of realism as well...

Flinty: I partially agree: a lot of hoses and tubing will be added, but on the other hand I'm reasoning there will be a whole bunch inside the armoured shell. After all, exposed fuel lines don't make for a long-lived vehicle .

inmygravenimage: Thanks! Don't have a grot in a proper position but scroll down for a snotling that fits the bill quite nicely IMO!

JohnnyHell: thanks!

Supershandy: yeah, my shelf of shame is pretty big by now...I should probably finish that stompa I started four years ago, amongst other things

Yorkright: Thanks! And remember: there's never enough dakka!

Today's modelling session was all about skinning the vehicle up, and adding some details. I added some exhausts, a door, and adde dplating the the main body (tracks and cockpit still need attention). other than that I cleaned up the turret, and added a railing on top - not to mention gluing wxay too many rivets on . Fly-around of the trakk:

And following up on Graven's idea (thanks for the suggestion!), I found a snotling that fits in quite nicely in my bitz box:

Next up: detailing the cockpit and forward track, adding some 'flame tank' stuff to make clear what this thing is all about, and detailing the turret with hacthes, barrels, cabling,... You know the drill. I'm debating whether to put a hatch on top, or to make a side entrance to the turret. Side entrance might destroy the nice lines of the turret, but on the other hand I have a nice flat surface there... Decisions, decisions...

Top hatch. With the armament mounted low, a side hatch would foul the gun lay.

Loving it. It’s like a Spectrum vehicle from Captain Scarlet and a classic Battlewagon had a rather lumpen baby. Big fan of the incongruous cockpit on the front. I second top hatch, but submarine style rounded rectangle rather than a circle.

Side Hatch. It's an Ork vehicle, you don't want 'nice lines'. Or rather, "Gross asymmetry creates visual interest and helps they eye to move around the object, exploring and feeling the lines of the piece. Balance creates a pleasing whole, but stagnates the eye. Adding asymmetry to an otherwise balanced piece therefore creates a mix of both worlds- the visual coherence of symmetry, with the dynamicism of asymmetry."

... I kinda want to orkify that blurb.

Also, you need fenders on your rear tracks, of SOME kind. Even if they're just, like, pipe cages, or mud-flap rags.

Nice work.

It depends on what else you may want to stick on the turret, there's all manner of tools, spare tracks, spaced armour, storage, stowage, camo' netting, aerials, vision ports, as well as hatches... and any of that can be on top or around the sides...

Dry fit and see what grabs you.

inmygravenimage: figured you might like the little guy . +1 for top hatch noted

Meer_Cat: interesting point. +2 for the top hatch it is!

JohnnyHell: I actually had to look that up, but I agree, this vehicle got that nice classic sci-fi look with how the cockpit is attached. Interesting suggestion with the hatch as well, I have a few taurox side hatches that just might fit. +3 for top hatch

Anvildude: now that's a lovely explanation, wel written sir! It also nicely explains why I want to add something to the side at least (evene if it's not the hatch) +1 for side hatch, thank you Fender sis just too late I'm afraid, the exhausts are blokcin where I could put them :(

Flinty: and theu should have spikes

Yorkright: Noted, thanks!

Dr H: totally agree. I want to add all kinds of stuff to the turret. I'll have the final position of the hatch depend on whatever else I may toss on there

No piccies today sadly, since the camera's battery died, but I'll have you know I've been working on the cockpit and track area, while pondering my turret conundrums. Pics up tomorrow, with any luck

So, the wife decided today was 'spring clean' day... Translation: didn't get done as much ad I'd hope .

Since I'm still making up my mind about the turret hatch, I decided to finish off the cockpit area. I glued the pilot to a bit of removable flooring, added a joystick and then worked on the outside. Nothing special, but good to get it done:

The cockpit got all fogged up,I'm hoping we have some kind of cleaner in the house that will fix that (don't touch clear stuff with glue-riddled fingers boys and girsl!). Now, I just need to add skorchas, finsihthe rear and bottom, and make up my mind about that turret. Coulde be worse .
