Sanded, black-ed, mid-grey from above-ish, brown, then more black...

With that done I think it's time for some metallic dry-brushing and finally deciding what is going to be what colour.

I swear there are metallics on it now. I know you can see it on the pipes, but the two main shapes are also metallic; they just don't really show in the photos (they will get more metallic in time).

From last time there has been gunmetal dry-brushing over mostly everything and then some brown and black washes on one and blue/black washes on the other.
As I said, they will get some metallic highlighting and weathering (scratches and the like) later.

What you should see is a old, worn and weathered exterior for something that is still in use and maintained, but lives a hard life.

I'm now in the process of colouring in areas, starting with the harder to reach parts, and will work my way outwards. Finishing up with the usual signs and labels and weathering etc.

I've come to realise that the specific weathering on Nerdy's metals (that I am using for inspiration in the painting) are not entirely going to work on this: The scratches etc. on his tanks and armour come from being in battle and moving through the environment. This, being a static building, does none of those things and therefore shouldn't have the same damage. The weathering here should be from (predictably) the weather; the act of rain and wind.

There are a few points where I'll be able to add harsh "chipping", but the majority of the metallic weathering will be more subtle worn edges (sandblasted etc.) and rusting. Then some water streaks and liquid leaks to complete.

That's the theory anyway. Need to do the rest first...

It's looking great Dr H. The mastery of the build is going to pay big dividends as you paint it.

Thanks Gits'. It is going to fight back though; not all plain sailing.

Some colours.
Green for the people-tube (for them to walk through) between the buildings,
Brown-red for the weather protection paint on the "metal" support bits,
Gloss black, blue and green for the flexible hoses or wires etc.
Chrome silver for the finest of pipes,
Brass (basecoat) for the thicker "thin" pipes.

Those coils around the upright "fractional distillation towers" were tricky to paint in particular due to the way they pass around and about the "exit" pipes. But not impossible. You just have to carefully poke the brush though a gap, paint what you can reach and carefully extract the brush. Then move on to the next...

You'll also notice the addition of the "rope" about the upright "vent pipe" (previously biro internal). Even though I had milliput wrapped around it, I managed to snap it off, and if I snap it off while painting it's not going to hold up to gaming. So I wrapped some floss about it and glued that on firmly: it's not going anywhere now without taking the large pipe with it.

Now to do the larger pipes, probably just metallics; these kind of things are rarely exciting colours (but they will get bright signs and labels later).
And to decide what colour to do those distillation towers. They are currently untouched after the basecoat. I'm leaning towards dark... lets those coils stand out... May see how the pipes go first.
And that container on the side (with the red straps) needs a colour to differentiate it from the building...
Decisions decisions...

Maybe light blue, like gasometers, for the distillation towers? Generally very cool overall. Do I spy a rhino hatch as a door?!

I don't know if the silver fine pipes will show up against a light blue. But I do like the idea of light blue for the tank on the side of the building; should contrast nicely with the red bands/support for it.

Do I spy a rhino hatch as a door?!
You do. I needed a door for the building and found this in my box (liberated neatly from my rhino-tank conversion). It's been installed here as a swing-out door, rather than slide-open door. Not actually working, but hinges (in the shape of plastic rod) have been added to each side to show this.

I think you should make the big, conical towers pink...

The door part looks great! I especially like the big light fixture hanging above it.

Thank you Gits'. I think you've been painting too much pink lately. I think for these long, "ribbed" shapes, pink may not appeal to everyone.

Thanks AshNomad and welcome to DDakka. The light fixture (as well as a few other pieces here) I received from OneManNoodles right here on DD.

For the distillation towers, they have ended up blue.
Couldn't be red, as that would be too much red with all the support frames (and planned warning signs and symbols).
Can't be yellow, Orange or browns, as that is too close to the brown building below them; would merge in too much, I want them distinct.
I don't want them green, as that is not industrial enough and won't let the planned few scraps of plant-life stand out for being green.
Plain metal is out, as that's what all the other pipes and things are. As is grey.
All that leaves blue...
Didn't want light blue as I mentioned before; the thin wires probably wouldn't stand out.

So, a deep blue is what we have.

Most of the colouring in is done now, soon the signs, symbols and weathering...

Was the door really going to be anything else but hazard stripes...?

Good color choices... signs and weathering are going to pull it all together nicely.

Thanks Gits'.

For today's progress we have the start of the final details:
Posters and signs (paper, dipped in white spirit and glued on with PVA, then varnished over),
Signs, labels and lines/rings (transfers/decals),
Plants (combination of plastic scrapings, foam, and various brush bristles).

I like the irony of a bio-hazard sign next to a large lump of plant growth.

The transfer I used for the number on the door was already ripped (as in, the paper backing was ripped right through the transfer), and it's a very old and brittle transfer. I chose it specifically for this reason; instant weathered appearance. I did still need to line up 4 separate parts of the transfer to give it some coherency though (keep it moist until you've moved the pieces in place and then leave it alone to dry fully).

Happy chocolate egg day tomorrow to you all.

Thanks Cam'. Yeah, it's good how a lick of paint brings things together and a relief that what you had in your head did come together and doesn't look as hideous as it did just after you glued it on.

There's still plenty of time left, I just can't justify taking all this time on one piece anymore; time is money.

Thanks Graven'. I do enjoy the final detailing stages more than the bulk painting. Giving the model a "life" and a history.

Thanks Big H. Yeah, they're great bits to throw at a model, and decals are always a nice addition (when they play nicely).

And it is done!
Again, this is meant to be "in use" and not deserted, so only minor weathering.
Nearly uploaded the finished pictures yesterday, but found one paint slip in the photos and had to touch that up and retake a few photos before uploading now (the slip can still be seen in 2 of the following photos that I couldn't be bothered to change, so you can all have a "Where's Wally" moment trying to "spot the slip").

Anyway, here it is, all the angles, in large, zoom-able photos.

"The Refinery?" (I'm keeping the question mark as it's been in the title for so long)
Other things to note:
Final tube count = 57 pieces.
And one person-tube (the green, flexible walkway between the two buildings); not made of a tube, but another take on the "tube" theme.

A bio-hazard sign near some decent plant-growth; is that a good or a bad sign for what you might find inside?

A tank of inert material, kept on the outside of the building, where it can be safely shot at...

A leak under the mass of pipes.

The blast-resistant cover of some high pressure equipment (maybe?) that has no access hatch and can only be lifted off as one piece; note the small red arrows to show the lift points.

Purpose-made support frame kept rust-free by red anti-rust paint (sprue use). With wires to prevent wind affecting the pipes it supports.

The two obvious, blue fractional distillation towers surrounded by cooling pipes and sprouting many pipes to receive the fractions.

4 different rivets plastic-rod, water filter beads, drilled holes (recessed rivets), and some moulded on ones of the sloped building (that I didn't notice until far into the building phase).

And one cheeky graffiti artist, slipping in a tag when no-one was looking.

All round photos (worth a zoom-in):

Close-ups of distillation towers and main pipes (and their support):

Close-ups of the smaller pipes and hoses, leaks and rivets:

and some more flavourful close-ups / low-angle shots:

And that's your lot.

Now onto the next model...
Been a while since I've done anything for my army, but I do have a couple of things to do in here too...
I should probably have a "tidy" first...

Thanks Gits'. Creation is the fun part.

Thanks Graven'. Thanks for the suggestion of blue, you see how a darker blue lets the wires stand out though.

I thought that the highest point needed some kind of warning marker and had these from the Ork transfer sheet.

In other news:
I have finally come up with a good idea of how to progress on a project that was intended for here but has not been shown (as I didn't know where it was going). Once it's a little way further on I'll have something to show you all here.
Stay tuned.

Doc, I'll be honest. You need a blurry image of Steve Ballmer next to that Engineers, Engineers, Engineers, Engineers sign.

A very nice piece. Add some more yellows-- the universal color for dangerous stuff. So much detail but similarly colored and contrasted tends to blur together. (Yes, genuine C&C.)

Red Harvest wrote:Doc, I'll be honest. You need a blurry image of Steve Ballmer next to that Engineers, Engineers, Engineers, Engineers sign.
Que? The internet tells me he was CEO of Microsoft and has lots of money. Beyond that, I don't know.
The original poster comes from Pioneer Engineering & Manufacturing Co. I'm assuming it's real, but I don't know where I got it from.

Thanks. Cool, good to get C&C. I'll look at it next time I have some yellows out.

And this is the next project:
It started as a standalone cube that I attempted to make from small pieces of junk. The idea being a set of these labelled as Junkubes.
No real use for anything (maybe as a paperweight at a push, or terrain for you gamers), just as a tactile piece of art.

But, as often with these wild ideas, it didn't "play ball"; ending up as not quite square enough, and needing quite a bit of putty to be used to make it feel better in the hand (for the tactile part, it's quite rough at the moment, not pleasant to handle).

Without either of those things, and requiring a large effort on both parts to see if it could be rescued I put it to one side to await inspiration.

The uncertainty of this project is why you haven't seen it here. It's been under the threat of being chopped up for it's parts.

However, I did get a surge of inspiration the other day and this is where it's going:
Mount it on a stand and turn the stand into a magical elevation / gathering mechanism to show it building itself from parts.

I've drilled a wooden post (old paintbrush handle) into what was decided to be the lower corner and that drilled and epoxy-ied into a block of wood for a firm base.
This is all covered over with card, more bits of junk, and tissue/PVA in preparation for swirly tendrils to be added with putty.

Here's three stages of that:
Imagine anything that isn't a bit of junk to be painted as dust/smoke/magic...

We can explore together where this goes from here...

Further progress.
I added some tendrils with my 3D printing pen and as it didn't stick very well to many places I've used putty to start building up shape and to anchor the tendrils.

They are still quite fragile and I'm not entirely happy with the look (but it is in that pre-primed stage where all models look hideous).
I'm going to add some more tissue/PVA over them to make them "sheets" rather than tendrils...
