No Vik..you want to use a sepia or brown wash, not black. Don't have any washes? make one! Just a brushfull of paint you want, and water it and mix it WELL, let it pool...DON'T TOUCH it (set in front of fan if impatient) and then you can highlight with white again.
Alternatively, you could paint it beige or bleached bone, then wash it with brown, and then white highlights

Got a 2.5k mini tournie next week.
I know out of 12 players there are 4 kanwalls, 3 DE and 2 other nid lists, so i thought i'd go for a laugh and take this:

I dont care if someone runs draigowing.
That averages 11.5 wounds per shooting phase from just the devourers lol.

Well then I'd use a home made pale blue wash for the recesses Vik, do it in 1 part blue (use a dark blue, as if you use a light one, thinning it will dilute it to nothing. my advice is a blue that is similar to cobalt blue) to 10 of water, and use the technique I suggested before.
