the green base does worry me a teeny tiny bit, but going up through lime green to yellow just didn't work... and I foolishly didn't order any fluorescent yellow pigment, so I can't go that route : (
I'm basically happy with them, and I don't want them to stand out TOO much and have the attention pulled away from the mini... we'll see though, I may go back and brighten them up somewhat : )

True, true, the others look awesome (especially the blue, which I want to steal for my army, would love a tut sometime, I struggle with all my blue OSL glowing eyes). It's just the green one looks strange with white in the middle, it might be because I'm so used to seeing lime green LED lighting.

If you do decide to go back to them, I believe Vallejo do a fluorescent range. Ah yes, Fluo Yellow (or possibly green). Here's some thoughts about it and examples on Warseer.

the blue was a base of Sotek, for both the icon and the outer glow, then highlighting up with Temple Guard, then fluro blue, then Baharroth, and then Baharroth with some Ceramite mixed in : )
I have noticed that for OSL you need:
a) to be good at your blending
b) lots of room so you can get a nice smooth transition (which is part of the problem with the bases - room is somewhat tight!)

It might be worth trying to get hold of some fluro yellow...

First highlight layer of yellow done (I think... no doubt I'll see something I need to do in the shots).

Also Drake backed on Kickstarter. I'm a weak, weak man.

Fin it looks as if you may be back into the swing of it now! that blend is as usual for you, superbly done! you know just where to leave the highlight without going ott with it, simply mind blowing and it's nowhere near done yet! are these going to be entered in GD this year?

More highlighting. The nice thing about taking so long to highlight up the yellow from the orange is that the next couple of levels of highlighting do tend to happen quite quickly. I think I still need to smooth out the blending a bit on the helm a little.

sorry Nerd - only just saw that you'd commented. Yeah, the plan is that these guys are going to be my GD entry for this year... plus Irillyth if I can get him done too. Bearing in mind some of the GD advice given to me on here, I've pushed the highlighting a bit further than perhaps I usually would, but I'm glad it's looking smooth and not too much. Hopefully he's not looking too bright and cheerful now that he's so bright... but just wait until the flail is done and the blood splatters are on the blade ; )

The blending of the colours are so smoooothe and clean man, really love it!

The colourscheme is also a really good one, cant wait to see the model done, keep it up bud!

Btw what is the trick? Alot of water in the paint and you just simply blend it? ;D

as ever Dakka chums, thank you for the praise, I always feel humbled at your words and that you like what I'm doing : )

Charky: yes, thin down the paint a fair bit with water (I'm curious to see how it would work with acrylic medium, but I suspect that the drying time would increase if I did that), and then lots of thin layers.

Not really an update... but I bought some of the Vallejo Liquid Gold pigments today - not been too happy with the new GW metallics, so I thought I've give these a go as I'd heard some good things about them. I want the weapons on the DEldar to be objects of beauty as much as the Wyches themselves - part of the 'beautiful death' vibe they have, and I think these paints might add some depth to them... we'll see : ) I think I'll have to have a bit of a play with them first as they're alcohol based and need different handling to the usual acrylic paints.

The alcohol based ones? If so, I think they're really good. Been quite happy with mine. Gives an amazingly authentic looking gold color (my favorite is "old gold").

that's the ones Gitsplitta - I got Rich gold and White gold for the highlight, and then the Copper and Red gold...

Have done some more work on the DEldar - the undersuit highlighted up, and then little touches like the tubes for the combat drugs, a couple of gems, and the husk dagger. I also picked up my Vallejo Liquid Gold paints today, so I've been able to have a bit of a play with them - yey! They go on super-easy and give really good coverage, not like the GW metallics where you really have to work at getting a smooth coat. I do smell like a total wino now though as I kept spilling the surgical spirit I got to clean my brush with, but that's a small price to pay!
All I've done with them so far is to do the bangle on his ankle and the flail. I've given the flail a wash of Gryphs Sepia to deepen it up, and I'll go in and do a couple of highlights. The bangle is just the base gold, which I think I'm not going to wash as it's such a tiny area. I might do a highlight though.

Great progress, fin. That gold is a nice vibrant match for the orange. It'll be interested to see how it's effected by pairing it with other colours.

I have one other guy with a flail, so there might not be too much gold throughout the team as a whole (I have a cunning plan that requires lots of metallics for the future... >coughDrakedragonscough<, so hopefully it won't be a huge concern. The other weapons are either going to be glowy agonisers or dark crystal blades... I think... ; )

Amazing bone and armour, but the gold clashes a bit for me...

I don't know if you hate the idea of doing it again, but might it be better as a blue-steel to contrast with the warm armour?

No, I'm not averse to redoing it... I'm not completely sold on the blood I've put on it and the base blade, and I do like the idea of the contrasting cold-tint metal for the blade. Any others out there with any preference?

I've stuck him on the base, and am just greenstuffing the joins, then I think I might have another crack at the green, but this time maybe start off with my brightest acid green and go darker from there...

Not feeling the base yet to be honest, bud. Not sure if it needs finished to bring it together or whether i just don't fancy it. I think you're feeling the same, go with your gut.

I think you need to go brighter with the green on the base, something like on his tubes. That would also tie him to the base nicely.

How smart ass are you feeling Fin? with those models and poses after seeing that one on the base, I think something outside the square would be great! the bright armour reflected in the base as if it was liquid would be amazing! :-) as if he's jumping over water or a pool of viscious fluid!

Haha, yeh that's what I mean. Painting the rock might finish it up nicely and bring it all together. Although I'm more than slightly excited by nerdfest's idea. A reflection would be so cool it hurts.

^^ What NF09 says, kind of like reverse OSL from the model to the base like a shimmering reflection.

no pressure then... ?
I have no idea how I'd even go about putting a reflection in... other than to put random shapes into the 'liquid', and I'd have to do the dark as well as the orange... I'd also have to put a shadow in on the base to represent him jumping. Not sure that there's enough of a pool of 'liquid' for it to communicate as a reflection, and that it'd just look a bit sloppy... Hmmm... requires thought.
I am more than a little dismayed at how the 'glow' is almost the same colour as greenstuff - definitely not bright enough!

... been working on him all morning, and I'm not entirely sure I can see that I've actually done anything!

I've redone the green; it's not great, but I don't think I have it in me to try again. I just can't seem to get a bright enough yellow or green. Fluro yellow would help I think, but unfortunately I don't have any. It'll do for now.
