Casting using lightweight premix filler...
I usually use resin or dental filler...
Both are brilliant in there own ways, the plaster coming in a little cheaper than the resin and giving nice crisp casts, but a little fragile, if you don't get the mix just right, and the resin just brilliant and hard and durable.
Unfortunately I am running out of both with doing so many castings for my Ork Space Hulk. So I thought I have a tub of this stuff lets try it, see what happens.
So this is the results. Crazy light, rubbery feel, not the best at picking up the detail (failed badly on an alien tile I had also tried.) But lets see after a coat of paint, just how bad can it be?
Coat of Hycote plastic primer.
Couple coats of paint and washes.
Comparison with the real thing..
Not bad at all, bit of texture, but looks the part, have to see how durable it is, and need to experiment, because this is water based, so I wonder what happens if I mix a little PVA glue through it? That's for later.
And here is a step by step of me producing a new master for my walls...(spoilered cus!)
Spoiler:
Start with some Sintra board, it is a styrene board used for signage, not foam core, this is harder, but not really solid like Evergreen stuff.
I have some 10mm and 5mm, and for this the main board and support base will be 10mm.
Use a knife to cut "v" grooves to form the shapes of your panels. I will be adding struts so I carve a place for them first then work the rest out.
Since this is orky, got to notch out some bits on the side of the panels, try and not take notches out were panels continue behind other things.( I remember about half the time.)
Now to add some rivets, I use this..
And just press it in..
Next get some strips, and carve struts, these I used 5mm thick stuff for.
These I stick down with PVC pipe adhesive...
Then carve your base support/trunking bits, and stick them on.
And repeat for other side...
Next the little details..
I use a pointy thingy..
And scratch in cracks and details...
Now that took me about 30-40 minutes including mucking about with a camera, you could produce lots of these, or as me, you could use this as a master and make a mould and cast it. I think I will actually make a very simple mould, though you could easily make a two part mould and get it in a oner, if I think about it I could probably make a silicone one piece mould, but that is up to you.
Hope that is helpful to someone, aint no master class, just how I roll.
To finish some gratuitous shots of me mucking about with some of the hulk stuff I have so far...
Thanks for looking.

Bits..
Base..
Figs...
Base with a bit of paint..
Figs...
So it's going to be a Painboy with orderlies torturing Imperial Guardsman Bob. Title will be "No no no noooo!".
Fair bit to go, deadline 10th Jan should manage that easy. I stand no chance in the competition as they are all painters, I aint. But I like having a go every time these come up. try and push myself a bit.
Thoughts welcome.

could you provide some fluff for the model? would make the hell lot of details easier to understand...as it is...the energy blade...and the hoses share the same colour... intentional? also, did you do OSL on the painboy? otherwise he has some smears due to drybrush on the sides of the chest, and the arms...if the former...then i would try to intensify the effort there to make it unmistakably...
@ Vik Thanks bud, will give a bit of fluff below. As to the "OSL on the body, been trying to add fleshy bits, so belly underside of arms etc, going pink, not really got it right yet. Also he has some dried blood splatter around that region.. The only real OSL is a bit of glow from his blade, wanted to keep that low key as it tends to take over I find. So just a hint down his arm a little on his pack and hints on tool tray and wall, maybe I need to intensify it a bit.
@ Gits Thank you sir, much appreciated.
OK what is behind this model.....
Nerdy competition, various themes one of which is No No NOOO!
I did think of having a guardsman or marine bent over with a painboy and large attachment in position. but it has to fit on a 40mm base and I would also like to keep it something like a legal model. So figured a Painboy with a couple orderlies, torturing a Guardsman will have to do. Get his hand and face to be saying the NO and I should be there.
I am under no illusions I don't stand a chance in the comp, the other competitors are real painters, but I figure it's always good to keep pushing a bit.
Fluff.
Zedrik da Doc "Deese 'umies are so soft. Now boys, lets try and keep dis un alive! I is curious to see if dey is like us. Just a couple cuts and we is seeing if un of me improvements is working on him! Maybe my new claw, have to miniturize it for him doh, he is punny!"
Guardsman 3021013 "No No No NOOOOO!" Why am I so unlucky, five minute nap and wake up behind enemy lines with Dr Freekshow here!
Grot Zee" Cut him again master, he still yackin', they never shuts up!"
Grot Dink" Move and I blow yur ear off!"
My own thoughts on my painting...
Spoiler:
Catachan to try a bit of flesh tone work, Think he is maybe a bit tanned, but not far away, wish I had got a better face, as this one is really difficult to detail, always comes out caricature, wanted gritty.
Wanted grots to be more green, like glowing green, as my grots tend to be an intensified or concentrated version if you like, may yet add a yellow to the skin tones on them, to bring it glowing out. Although I have done about 5 layers of blending on them they have come out flat, and not really happy.
Painboy, wanted brutal for the sake of fun, think that is there, with my orks I am trying to do a pinky underside, (blame Nerdy) like the idea of a slight contrast fleshy lips and soft parts, under the arms, belly, throat etc. been trying to do "freckles" as well toning the green into it, but all seems wasted at the moment, His general green although I am happy with it, doesn't have enough contrast again, got to work on this. His weapon is his electric carving knife upgraded a little.
Over all I like it, but I think I can do better. Wanted to improve my painting some time ago, have obviously got distracted, as I think I have done better, rushing again and not really in a happy place with it, mind is off doing other things, the painting has been a chore, and that shows I think.
Just want to add....With the end of the year coming up and looking back....
Thank you all for looking, and the foolish few who still hang and comment, means a lot. Don't really do this for accolades and applause, but prefer to get comments than drifting along. Enjoy feedback, especially constructive critique. And I guess like us all I want a few more votes in the gallery, again though, for growth, independent review, which tells me if I am improving or not.
It is fun and the one thing I have in life which is to be honest.
Heres to another year and hopefully you all hang around.

my big plan is to hang around at dakka the coming year again a bit more than the last couple of months ago showed...that and get some hobby action again...that is my new year resolution so to say...
the fluff and your thoughts towards your painting has truly helped understand the model way better...
i think one step to see if you really achieved with your painting what you´ve planned would be to actually change the lighting situation... dunno if in person under the bleeding sunlight your models come out better...but that is my strong guess here...following this train of thought, i think you should invest in some wee minutes out in aforementioned sunlight and take the above shots anew and then you can really go to town and dissect your painting skills... before that i think i like your idea of a more vibrant green looking grots... that is one thing i would suggest you to tackle some more...as i like that...the soft flesh issue is a nice idea...seen n nature in many forms and variations...to be honest, i am not seeing it currently with the doc tho...yet...again...changing light might do that trick...
as for the guardsman about to get chopped to pieces...i think the face fits the nononoooo theme just right, and the posing of his character is also very good... you´re a regular storyteller when it comes to model pantomime...if you´re in need for more guardsman heads...just say the word... i could get drowned in these... many variations in oblivion in my bitz box!
only one issue for me that i would like you to think about... basically there aren´t that many colors around to choose from in a scheme for any model... green is for orky skin...check... you used the blue for the energy effect...check... details in red, black and white...check... pants and the (forgot the name of that wrapped around calf area...) in browns and beiges...check... which leaves purple and yellow and pink...these would be options for the hoses of the pain boys weapon...to be honest the one major issue is exactly this... the two detail parts share one hue and are exactly together...this makes me edgy...so to say... firstly for that randomly look i would choose two colors, one for each hose, and secondly...and since the binding cloth is close to yellow you either change the binders color and use yellow hose or choose other colors for the hoses more into a pinky hue...? did i make myself understandable here?... hope you can cope with my thoughts/ critics^^
Feeling a bit orky and after recently doing a large birdy thingy on my other blog, I think I am in the mood for a Squiggoth I started a while ago.......
