Retribution have about half as many entries as every other faction, 28 vs. 47 for Cryx (not including any new releases in the faction book).

I don't really get the prices.
The softcover MkI rulebook is only $25. Over 250 pages.
The Forces of Warmachine Pirates book was thinner, about 64 pages, but it was $22 softcover.

The Scyrah book was $35 for softcover also, but that was equal to an expansion book to my mind.
It was a new faction and they were unsure of its sales.
I am not sure how many pages it was, but it was a lot of new rules.

Unless they feel the price accounts for the loss of sales due to faction split?

I won't be buying the faction books right away, and maybe not ever. Price is not really a factor.
They just seem unnecessary to gameplay.
I will eventually get the mkII rulebook, but I will have to pick up the card decks.

Probably they don't expect everyone to buy every faction, as you say.

Also: main rulebooks might also be loss leaders.

Probably.

But at $35 a book, I definitely wouldn't buy them all.
At $25, with the online prices you can find, it is a digestable sum. probably about $75.
Same discount comes to about $105 w/ given cost.

The same could be argued for both GW and PP's mini prices.

"If it was cheaper, I'd buy more!"

But a luxury item doesn't necessarily want to be sold on the cheap. Luxury and
brands are not just about quality, but also the perception of that quality.

I am not disagreeing with that viewpoint.

But I do agree with what John said earlier.

If PP does well with $35 army books, GW may think they can do it too.

Yeah, I think it is fairly safe to say the other faction books will be bigger. The Retribution book, being a new faction, may have a bit more background than the others will though. Regardless, 116 pages is probably the minimum page count we can expect from the faction books.

Those are pretty darn close to the originals, though comparisons are a bit hampered by the drastic difference in paint schemes between these and the MkI metals from the PP studio.

The supply does not get to make the demands.

They are close in design, but they seem to be a bit more mis proportioned than the originals. The heads are all smaller, and while the arms have a better range of motion the joints and little metal "bones" connecting them seem to be even smaller. This could all bear out when they are in the hands though. It's hard to tell without only a single perspective photo. I do like the percieved better range of motion and functionality though.

As far as the staffers have said the faction books are just to compile the information from the other books into one handy spot. And contrary to belief, if you don't want to buy them you don't have too. The only actual information you need is in the faction deck (running at ~$18.99) and all the new models come with their own cards.

I'm only half tempted to buy the cygnar book, what will push me is if the new warcaster (which all of the four original main factions are getting) is interesting enough to check out the backstory on. I tend to like privateer's fluff better then GW's (matter of opinion though) as its more character driven, and not just "Heres the history of the army with a few cool side stories."

And for those wondering size comparison, here is one of the Original Metal Juggernaught, the new plastic Juggy and the extreme Jug.

Shamelessly lifted from Grey Knights post on the privateer forums.

So WM is going to be doing army books / codexes just like GW? i thought their books were always like expansions?

only for the release of MKII, after MKII is full out they said they will be going back to the all factions in a single book expansion model, there reasoning was a 600 page main rule book might be a little expensive.

oh.. are all the army books coming out at once? or over time? I guess it's not like GW where all the rules need to be in the army book, when all the rules are on the cards...

There is only one extreme warjack out, and that's the Juggernaut.

The extreme sculpts are highly exaggerated versions of a regular model that
Privateer Press sells on their website.

Extreme sculpts to date:

Extreme Dire Troll Mauler
Extreme Warpwolf
Extreme Juggernaut

They usable in game, but they're often top heavy and expensive (dollars wise).

Over the course of five months, you'll see:

WARMACHINE

* Cygnar
* Khador
* Protectorate of Menoth
* Cryx
* Mercenaries

I believe the rulebooks start releasing in March?

To everyone in this thread complaining about the $35 army books, you do realize that they are NOT necessary for gameplay, right? Each army book is every release for that faction since Prime, and a few new units, under their MkII rules. All their rules will be in the MkII faction decks and new things will come with new cards. It'll be convenient to have all my faction's units in one book, and that's what these books are good for. And as it has been pointed out, after this PP will go back to expansion model they have been following with a new book with stuff for all the factions in it.
