@gitsplitta - I considered asking around for a bump but it was late and I'm lazy, so very lazy...
@comissar Agro - Yeah I will definitely change the colour of the que...and thanks now I will never be able to look at him without seeing Jackie Fricken Chan!
@c0un7_z3r0 - Thanks!
@Listrel - Hopefully by putting warpaint on the other squad members the warpaint on this guy will be seen in cntext, otherwise I can always repaint him.
@young_logan - Thanks man, the great thing about the teeth is that they are just kroot spines and GS, a lot easier than sculpting the whole thing Course now I am trying to think of a way to build a bead chestplate thing and have a feeling thats going to be a stone cold bi7ch.
Thanks for the feedback,

Hi Blackhand,
I really like the feathered purity seals and the trophies. The extra details are certainly setting your boys apart from the ordinary, it's giving me a few ideas for my chaps...
I think the black hair may still work with the warpaint being when it's in context with the whole squad. I'll be very interested to see them all together because I think the black will contrast nicely with the overall scheme.
Cheers,
tsd

Purity feathers are nice.
And when I saw the saberteeth I kept thinking 'well, if he gets into a nasty bout of CC they won't need the standard issue combat knives...'. Seriously, I can see a chapter like that making and using custom knives from their hunting trophies. Maybe the challenge for those attempting to become initiates is to kill a sabertooth and bring back the fangs (don't salamanders have to do something similar?) which is what their daggers are made from.

Are you fluffing them as a Space Wolf successor or a completely different chapter using the counts as ruling? Was trying to give a chapter name suggestion and this was causing me some difficulty.

I don't usually post in these sorts of threads but this project is coming along so nicely, I couldn't resist. Excellent job!
Please, please, please tell me you're playing these guys with SW rules! And please tell me you're laying out their fluff as a SW successor! If you want any help with their fluff, please don't be shy--I'd love to help. Hell, I might even write some stuff up spontaneously.
As for their name: Feral Hearts, Primal Hearts, Savagers, Savage Fangs, Ripclaws, Wildclaws, Wildfangs, Primevals, Shamans, Fang Shamans, etc.
I would avoid anything with tooth. It'd be silly to refer to a group of Sabretooth warriors as the Sabreteeth.

@soupdragon - Thanks bud, I'm glad you like em, I'm hoping the warpaint comes off well but as you say I think we will know when a few more marines are finished. @tony_nids - Thanks! @morgrim - Yeah the idea of an initiate hunting a sabretooth is definitely what I was thinking, very mucc in the vein of the space wolves. I also found a kitset sabretooth skeleton which I am going to incorporate into some secenery at some point..the best bit is the size of it, in the marine scale it would be about 30m long, the idea of marines hunting and killing massive sabretooth and mammoth for fun is pretty cool and it ties into the "lone wolf" idea of a marine that is only concerned with hunting monstrous creatures. @effendi - Thanks and yes the chapter is a space wolf successor..only space wolves would be nuts enough to found a successor chapter on a planet covered in giant sabretooth lions and other paleolithic monsters. @manchu - Wow, glad you posted! and yes they are using SW rules and are a SW successor chapter. They are based on a planet covered in plains, that varies between baking summer heat and icelocked winters. They chose the planet for the hunting (cave bear, mammoth and of course sabreteeth) and over the thousands of years have taken on the sabretooth as their totem as opposed to the wolf. If you feel like writing fluff , fluff away! I'm generally useless at writing fiction though I have sketchy backstories for some of the squad members, again feel welcome to post up anything you come up with, oh and thanks for the names I will add them to my list of chapter names and yes don't worry I don't think they will end up as the sabreteeth Cheers, BLACKHAND

Just some sketches: I'd see them as White Scars led by a very ambitious commander who was passed up for Master of the Hunt. He therefore illicitly veered a strike cruiser off course to pursue one of the big bads on the WS most wanted list but ran smack into a trap: when he came out of Warp over an unknown planet, he encounters a small Chaos battlegroup rather than a single vessel. Luckily, the commander is dab hand at his job and proceeds to destroy a couple of Chaos ships and--in an intended act of final desperation--rams his own cruiser into the Chaos flagship. As the two vessels plummet into atmosphere, Marines and Traitors launch simultaneous boarding actions. The fighting reaches a fever pitch as both ships crash. Heedless of their cataclysmic surroundings, the demigods continue to grapple. But the tide is turning in favor of the Traitors. Suddenly lithe-limbed aliens stream into the battlefield wreckage, felling Chaos Space Marines left and right. It turns out the planet is a Maiden World and the WS's unlikely saviours are Exodites. The Marines regroup and ultimately the SM commander faces off against the Chaos Lord--with the result of the Chaos Lord's head being taken for the Chapter's honor. Although his Marines urge him to pursue and annihilate the mysterious Exodites, the reckless SM commander finally sobers up and realizes he now has no means to return to Chogoris in glory with his prize. Instead of chasing the Exodites, the Marines set about to salvaging the wreckage into a makeshift fortress. The apothecarion equipment has thankfully survived but all communications are out except for the long-range distress beacon. The Marines face being cut off from the Imperium for at least centuries if not forever. Automatically Appended Next Post: And so the decades and eventually centuries pass with nary a sign of the Exodites. But the Marines do discover nomadic tribes of tough humans who dimly remember the glory of the Emperor. From these hardy warriors, they replenish their ranks. Unfortunately, the process is not going as planned. Something is happening to their geneseed that the Maines do not fully understand. Over successive generations of warriors, each more influenced by the savage lifestyle on this feral planet than the ancient traditions of the WS, there is marked degradation. In one of his last acts, the commander uses genetic material from the top predators of what has become their prison-planet to help stabilize the mutation. With no clear idea of what may be wrong with the "new" generation, the original WS ensure that they maintain strict leadership. Tensions develop between the old guard and the younger, indigenous Marines. This finally breaks out in an argument over whether to search for and eliminate the Exodites. But the real issue is over whether or not to abandon the WS traditions. A kind of civil war breaks out and brother fights brother--the seeming doom of Space Marines. The young traitors are eventually put down by the old guard with the help of young loyalists but the price is heavy--the traitors have destroyed the cogitator units housing the chapter histories and traditions, many of the chapter relics that had been salvaged from the wrecks, and the final surviving original WS. Aghast at these terrible struggles, the native humans go into hiding and are unwilling to deal with the surviving Marines.

Thanks for the effort Manchu! I like the idea of a group of marines being cut off from the imperium and being forced to build their chapter from scratch.
couple of questions.
If it's a maiden world would the burgeoning chapter get into trouble with the exodites?
How would a chapter grow without a human population to draw recruits from?
And why White Scars, I don't know much about them other than they use a lot of bikes, I get the idea they nomadic hunters though, is that right?
Thanks again for the effort in writing some background for the aas yet un-named chapter, it's given me lots to think about!

To make matters worse, the Exodites reappear and begin harassing the Marines. After some hard-won victories, the Marines discover that the Exodites had been systematically but subtly wiping out the human tribes during the Marine civil war. The Marines, too busy with their internal strife, had not even noticed the xenos threat. They begin to attack and eventually massacre the Exodites. Finally, they come upon the ancient ruins of what they cannot know is an ancient webway gate. The device is damaged and bends the Warp toward this location, allowing Chaos to bleed into the material world. Perhaps this is what drew the Traitor Marines that the White Scars had originally pursued? The Marines are at this moment attacked by swarms of warp-mutated humans, whom they duly slaughter. The experience weighs heavily on them as they reflect upon their own problematic geneseed.
Encountering no more Exodites or mutants, they leave the site and proceed to winning back the confidence of the native humans by organizing and protecting them. They bend some to agriculture and begin creating permanent, defensible settlements. Others are allowed to continue their nomadic warrior existence and it is from these that they recruit. All the while, they keep a careful watch on mutation amongst themselves and their human serfs--culling as necessary. The centuries are punctuated by the odd mutant rebellion, a rare and seemingly random Exodite incursion, and most troubling of all infrequent daemon attacks from the webway site.

Great stuff, Blackhand.
Y'know, I'm surprised you haven't made greater use of your username, as far as naming your chapter goes. Why not call them the Black Claws? You could paint their gloves black, too.
The Black Fangs might also work.

Cool Manchu, Like the idea of constant mutant attacks to sharpen the chapters claws while they are stuck on the planet. Maybe the warp gate could be the reason the animals on the planet have become so large and deadly too @albatross - The reason I havn't used my user name in the chapter is that my Inquisition forces are named the named "The Blackhand" and yes they all have black gloves I've even modelled greenstuff black fists on their banners. you can check em out on my DH blog http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/257417.page So yeah I thought I would stay away from using the Blackhand symbology again Automatically Appended Next Post: Ok so I know I have said repeatedly that I only plan to build a squad of the sabretooth marines but when I saw these guys on an online auction I just couldn't resist....
...ever since I played in a doubles tourament with a marine player and got to see his two plasma cannon devastators repeatedly blow enemies to little flaming peices I wanted to have a few of my own. The chance to pick up an ENTIRE squad of them was too much to pass up.
So yeah the Sabre marines will continue for at least a little while past the first squad...please noone tell my fiance..no really please.

Sorry, I had to break off to do some things around the house. The Marines begin to plan the destruction of the damaged webway. They believe that the Exodites are using it to wipe out the humans through genetic mutation and, in a more straight forward but dangerous tactic, summoning daemons. The Marines reason that the Exodites did not wipe out humans before because they were hardly more than stone age barbarians. But under the Marines they have grown into a strong empire. Meanwhile, they are more and more forgetful of their own true past and develop new traditions and fighting styles, relying less on their diminishing supplies of ammunition and more on melee combat. It is at this point that they adopt their new name, whatever that ends up being. Matters pertaining to the webway gate draw to a head as a greater daemon/mutant force than ever encountered arises, sparking a decades long war. As the years stretch on, the SM and their human armies fight the threat back to the webway site. In the midst of battle, the Exodites show up and the Marines immediately redirect all efforts at slaying them, who they see as the source of the conflagration, even preferring them as targets over daemons. At the pivotal battle between Marine hero and Exodite Archon, the Archon reveals that they did not summon the daemons. He does not know why they are here. He does not even know what the Webway is, which the Marines have by this time also forgotten (if they ever really knew). He admits to killing off humans because now that the Marines have organized them and exponentially grown their population, they have become more dangerous than ever. He says that they have always mutated, becoming more dangerous and savage than usual. In the distant past, the Exodites has pitied them and only culled their numbers like they would any other of the dangerous animal species of this world. But now that the Marines had forged a human empire, they resolved to kill all of them. Automatically Appended Next Post: BLACKHAND wrote:Maybe the warp gate could be the reason the animals on the planet have become so large and deadly too
Yes, that's a great idea! More to come in a minute or two or ten. Automatically Appended Next Post: In unfathomable rage, the Marine Hero breaks the Exodite Archon and proceeds to wipe the Eldar from the rest of the planet. The Marines finally realize the horrible truth of their genetic divergence: There was never anything wrong with the original WS geneseed. The mutations were endemic to the population from which the WS recruited. It was not until the SW commander tinkered with the WS geneseed that anything was corrupt about it. Furthermore, by using the genetic material of the tainted planet's Sabretoothed monsters--themselves mutated by the Warp--he corrupted the once pure geneseed of the Great Khan with Chaos itself!

Things begin to look bleak in the war between Man and Daemon. The Marines begin to feel the lack of their original traditions, the lack of an identity, the lack of the theological organizational tenants that keep Chapters fit in mind body and spirit. Their demoralization bleeds into their merely human armies and this, combined with a surge in the daemonic numbers, turns the tide. But a few Marine warriors begin to revive the old stories about the Great Hunter Who Rules The Skies. Stories alone, however, will be of little use against the Ruinous Powers.
In these dark days, contact with the Imperium is finally re-established. Logan Grimnar himself has stumbled across the ancient distress beacon and happened to be close enough to respond. The Wolves descend on the planet, discover their long lost brothers, and stymie the daemonic incursion. Perhaps unlike certain other chapters, the SW can sympathize with the plight of the stranded, tainted Marines. Grimnar helps to further stabilize their geneseed.
Anyway, the point is that the Wolves help them rebuild after the WS reject them as too divergent to be brothers. Grimnar teaches them SW tactics and organization, basically adopting them as a successor.
That's all I have.

Pretty amazing stuff Manchu, where did it all come from? Or did something in my models shout "lost White Scars horribly mutated chaos geneseed repatriated by Russ into a loyalist chapter"?
Can't thank you enough for taking the time to give my chapter a history, definitely a history much more interesting and angst ridden than one I had imagined but suitably epic!

I guess the steady decline of their entire planet in chaotic ruin and subsequent salvation from entropy by Russ himself is SLIGHTY less epic than a centuries long war against chaos spawn and eldar exodites.....but only slightly

And on the modelling front...
I am chipping away on the paintjob on Walks-in-Shadow, He is nearly all blocked in, I plan on adding more than the usual amount of brown in the hope of adding to the stealth element.
I have finished all the GS additions to my Melta Specialist, Eats-the-Sun, and I should be able to be move onto painting him by the end of the weekend heres a few pics
He has the most "out of the box" legs of the whole squad, I figured the meltagun was going to take most of the focus anyway, still added a his fair share of trophies and have still to add the fur "mane" that all the sabretooth marines will have in one form or another
Work on the models will be slow over the next few days due a stubborn cold (sneezing with brush in hand is not productive!) and to the annual tournament our club holds, I am helping organizing the event but may still get roped in to make up the numbers in the event of an uneven number of people wanting to attend, in that case my Blackhand Guard will trudge wearily onto the field for another repeated ass-whipping,
Cheers
