I dont think I like that sanguinary guard model at all! lol

Its just really rough and messy and cluttered with bits of indestiguishable detail.

That aside, the actual work that you've done is great! I will wait till youve finished something before I say anything else. lol

Ok, just looked at the model on the GW site, and Ive changed my mind lol. I think its just the torso I dont like completely, cuz its not an actual body, its just armour in the shape of a body but its the extra rib cage part that looks wierd to me, but it isnt indistinguishable at all.

This is VERY promising. Will you, or have you already done a Wolverine? Maybe a weapon-X scout?

@ commissar Argo - Thanks, I probably don't need to be a smartass when people question casting models but it feels so goood!

Tim the Biovore wrote:I'm still here.

Whew! I was worried for a sec and yeah the torso is quite different than a normal one and I am looking at carving even more off the back of them. I will dig out an AOBR marine for some comparisons later today and I will post a pic, I have a feeling that once the shoulder pqads and arms are on the model will look better.

Oh and the head I am using is a Dark Elf Knight..so..um..yeah

@Anung un Rama - Ok that was worrying, I have a feeling that this is going to be Tervi Spider legs all over again

@Flying Pooo - Thanks man

@Tek - I know what you mean, I always take 10 mins before answering posts like that so I don't just sound too pissed off, I do my best to inject a bit off humour if nothing else. Thanks for your summation of the law BTW, if wasn't so long I would add it to my sig! Thanks for posting

@Ghosty - YES you do need to learn to cast! TBH its not really cheaper than buying a model and converting it but if you want to give a whole unit the same part its the only way to go.

@Limbo - Thank you sir, and now all I can do is think the same and a chaplain would satisfy the Allies rule when I second this unit to my GK hmmmm ( thants the noise I make when I think) hmmmmm....

@hamhamlauncher - I wish I was making a saving but the cost of silicone and resin is fairly high over here in litlle ol' New Zealand. The real way to save is...

Buy models directly from the UK, the pound isn't doing well at the moment and the NZ dollar at least is doing better = savings!

Buy your models from a second party seller like maelstromgames. uk , they give between 10-15% discount on all GW and free postage worldwide = Mad savings!

The tac squad and rhino I ordered will cost me roughly half of what it would have cost from the GW Australia site

@newt of death - Bear with me Newt, I will get some paint on the test model today and then you can make an informed decision, that said I am not a huge fan of the sanguinary guard models either tho more because of all the fancy crap all over them than the muscled armour. My hope is that the torso armour will make the marines look more like Sabretooth and reflect their feral and barbaric background of nomadic plains hunters, thats the idea anyway.

@the good green - LOL it looks like I should have gone straight for a wolverine themed chapter! I am considering doing a wolverine inspired Lone Wolf with dual lighning claws. the only thing was I am not a fan of his bright yellow and black X costume, the weapon X costume looks a lot better but my hope was to get away from red/black paint jobs for a while so suggestions would be appreciated!

Cheers,

LOL, No I havn't! the legs are perfect dammit!

Anyway, anatomically incorrect arachnid legs aside, I've been busy with the marines. I've painted the torso, and tried lining the brown with black to try and get it to pop a bit.

here is a pic with a proper marine sergeant head, suddenly the chest doesn't seem so out of proprtion

and a pic with an AOBR marine for size comparison

Again without shoulderpads and arms its hard to tell if the chest is too big but I just don't have any arms to try until the tac marines arrive. Last is a pic of a lion head I am trying to fit to the top of a marine head as a mask/headdress type of thing.

I'm working on having sit further forward on the head

C&C welcome (and needed!)

Cheers

I'd say you are gonna have to file down those teeth (unfortunately). I think the arms will make the chest look fine, and after all it is two layers of armour, isn't it?
The painting on the torso looks good. I think, if you painted the strips on in black first and then put on the brown, you could got thinner black lines around the strips.
I am loving this project.

Thanks Green , I will have a go at doing the stripes black then brown next time I do a set of legs. Speaking of legs I found a spare set today and had a go at cutting them into a bit more of an interesting pose.

I'm starting them off on a slate and gravel base but will eventually get hold of some long static grass to simulate the Sabres plains homeworld, I should be able to just glue the grass on over the gravel and get the look I want.

Here is a torso with a sabretooth amulet and my second try at a lion shoulderpad, this time I removed the lower jaw and cut down a lot of the pad which left me with a shoulderpad about 3mm shallower than the first which doesn't jut out so far when tacked onto the torso.

I also have a major problem to solve and I need some opinions...What do I name the damn Chapter!!!

I have a few ideas

The Sabre Legion (so far my first choice)

The Brotherhood (doesn't really reference the sabretooth)

Sons of the Sabre (meh)

and thats the extent of my imagination

Some things to think of is their homeworld is primarily plains and tundra, populated by massive engineered mammoths, ground sloths, cave hyenas and of course the Sabretooth. The human population lives in nomadic tribes and loosely resemble american indian culture. The Sabres are a space wolf successor chapter but have succesfully replaced the Canis Helix with one based on the sabretooth and so their wulfen equivelents show characteristics of a sabretooth cat rather than a wolf.

Umm thats all the fluff I have come up with so far but any suggestions for Chapter names would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers

No, they're not.

On topic: I like the model. The chest piece really makes it works. It's very Sabretooth-ish.
I'm not convinced by the helmet though, the head looks too big for the helmet to work. Still waiting for the head on a shoulder pad.

The sabretooth helmet is supposed to be more of a pelt than a marine helmet , kind of shamanistic with the head of the lion looking like it is eating the marines head...ok I'm not sure where I am going with that but it's late and I've had a few drinks.

I'm still working on the shoulderpad, its not easy to get a form that you know will cast easily with as few flaws as possible. I am also going to try GSing a more 2D shoulderpad with a lionshead sillouette to give to the Sabre version of a Blood Claw and Wulfen so keep an eye out for that

If you're going with the pelt thing, you should still try to put it a bit, well, tighter, over the head. Right now it looks like he's wearing it like a cap, but it makes more sense now.

I like the shoulder pad.

Names, hmm...what's wrong with Sabretooth Marines?
How about:
- The Sabre Lions
- The Sabre Cats (hoooooooo)
- The Sabre Teeth

Also, I assume your chapter master will be some sort of tactical genius

@ Rama - I had a go at cutting down a marine head so that the lion head fit better and this should work ok, just waiting for a better head to use it with.

Didn't have much time for modelling today but did have time to cut out a rough lion head symbol, this one is made of 3mm plasticard and is the right size for a rhino door. I will be doing another version with a larger mane I think but this is a start at least, of course I wll cast it in resin when I finish so that I can reverse it for the other side of the razorback and maybe put one on the front as well.

and since I have no models till they arrive from the UK I started painting my FW heavy bolter turret in preperation

hmmm..heavy bolter goodness

Will you please stop casting your Sanguinor, I'm physically, mentally or emotionally offended by seeing it !
Now, I like the idea of the army. If you're really wanting some cool wolf/cat-like heads, check out the Wargs form the LotR SBG. Cheap (relatively) and good for decapitation.

I'm not really convinced by the symbol. It just looks odd, though I can't quite put my finger on why that is.

If I didn't know what it's supposed to be, I wouldn't recognize it.

Does it make it worse that it's not even my model?

@Anung un Rama - I'm working on a version 2.0 and will concentrate on "recognizability", the main aim is to design something that I can paint or reproduce in gs on a shoulderpad, damn those things are small!

I'd rather not but could always go for a "tooth"design like some of the space wolf decals, just seems like a cop out and I definitely have plenty of time before my marines arrive.

@lennysmash - lol, took me awhile on Wiki to figure out who the sabra-jaguars were. And yeah unfortunately I wasn't a thundercats kid so I don't think I'll rock their symbol, as good as I am at ripping off Intellectual Property

@ Munch - Thanks Munch! I'm afraid I did a brown and a tan version of the marine on the SM painter then photoshopped it togther to get the scheme I wanted, cheating I know.

@Rama - Yeah I think I will go for something original for once

Damn! Better get back to work!

Something I just notices about the head- the eldar head looked better, I think, because it made the chest look like armour. The new head is getting closer, if not already, to looking like the chest is the guys chest, and he's just wearing spandex.
I also liked the eldar head better, it looked more like a wild thing than baldy does... though I do remember you writing something about GSing some hair after a bit. Sooooo-
And now I will go back and read the posts that I just scrolled past to see what I missed. I just didn't want to lose that thought to any new ideas that might come along.
What about doing the Sabre's head bigger, model it starting with a librarian sort of armour... *goggle searching* Found it!

@Whalemusic200 - thanks man Emporer's Fangs just made it on the list!

@Morgrim - I have thought about using smilodon in some way but it seems kind of 19th century, where sabretooth sounds more like something a 40th century techno-cretin would come up with, not sure if that makes sense

@the good green - I like the dynamic hair from the eldar head as well but I'm also on the search for some human heads with fangs, harder than you think! I know what you mean about how the head affects the percieved size of the chest armour but I also don't want their heads to be smaller than guardsman heads I definitely intend to GS a few creed-style muttonchops on few marines.
As for the sabre head, I'm still unsure of how I want to use but I think If I do a chaplain I will model a sabretooth skull as opposed to a pelt, mainly cause they always have skulls as helmets...and it looks cool

As always guys thanks for the ideas and inspiration!

Had time to work out a version 2.0 of the sigil, I know its not that different but it certainly has more rounded edges and a fuller mane. I have had no luck at all finding a lion logo or design that is any simpler, and no I won't be using the thundercat symbol

Will keep up the search for a more easily recognizable sybol but will also trial this one out at my local club this saturday

Not sure how it would turn out but how about using a silhouette like you have already yet instead of cutting in to define the characteristic paint them on. Now I'm not seriously saying use the TC logo but if you look at the lines it would be easy to copy to idea of paint the line is.

Added bonus would be that you would be able to add far more intricate detailing whilst still mane-taining (sorry couldn't help it) a silhouetted feel.

@Lennysmash - I get where your coming from, and its an idea...I do like the idea off doing a layered FW-type chapter symbol. I could always cast the two sides of the symbol then carve extra detail on opposing sides before casting them again.

@whalemusic - IDK if your joking or not but I meant Emporer's Fangs has made it to my list of names to consider! its still very much in the running

@saint spirit - Sabretusks is cool, and there is no way I'm making a firm decision till I've heard as many ideas as possible! Oh yeah and that Ogre hunter is where I got he original lion head I've been using, unfortunately the tusks are on the lower jaw which requires a bit of work to change, I do like the rest of the model though.

Keep those chapter names coming!
