My local charity shop has some books that have been on the shelf for a while:

Tyranid codex 2009
Chaos codex 2010
Orcs and Goblins 2006

They are all on sale for £3 each if anyone wants me to buy them and ship, happy to do so for cost price or a swap.

Nice shout on the old codex books.

Most of mine have gone to charity shops. Yes I know they are useless from the latest rules perspectives, but a lot of people can't afford to keep up with the meta, and I figure you'll get grandparents and whatnot getting them for kids and them being introduced to the hobby that way.

Yeah i thought someone might want them for nostalgia or maybe 'cos they actually want to play that edition.

The quality of writing an art in these old codices seems to vary somewhat to say the least. Forgetting rules for the moment, has anyone got any tips on brilliant 'must own' old codex/army books?

Wow that's a good one..

Definitely any of the 1st and 2nd edition stuff if you are lucky enough to find it! I'm a massive fan of the 2nd edition books with all of the lovely Mark Gibbons artwork. The text count in them is pretty high too, lots of background material.

3rd edition books if you are a fan of John Blanche artwork, some really dark and gritty stuff.

4th edition Chaos Codex as it's probably the best Chaos Codex ever released and holds a special place in the hearts of any Chaos players

For lore, pics, etc. it’s hard to recommend anything other than the 2nd ed codexes. Those are pure gold. Still need to find a Ultramarine one myself.

3rd were very fluff light. There was some fun stuff in the sidebars and odd page or two, but I’d not go out of my way to get them for anything but the rules. Of course, this is the edition I was buying them all, so have most of them...

4th+ are somewhere in the middle. Not the lean 3rds, but not up to the glory of 2nd. And they tend to just be rehashes of themselves as editions roll on, with only the rules changing.

Just bought a copy of the WHFB 3rd edition rulebook online. Pretty expensive, but not too bad as far as treats for myself go.

Very excited to leaf through it and re-read about how the Slann arrived on starships and moved the planet closer to the sun and whatnot.

I have a lot of affection for the RT era books. I spent many evenings as a teenager poring over the Compilation and Compendium. I went straight from 1st edition to 8th edition with a 25 year break, and of course now play 9th edition.

It's a classic, maybe not for lore but for bad photos of old minis (that giant is one ugly SOB). I bought it a while back - never even played that ed - purely because it is of an era with Rogue Trader and the WFRP stuff I was collecting at the time. If you havn't got it, I highly recommend WFRP 1st ed rulebook as well.

Bit of threadomancy, but entirely On Topic. Mods forgive me.

This year, I’ll be aiming to collect a complete set of 2nd Ed 40K books. All the Codexes, all the rule books. Templates too if I can get them for a not insane price.

Tonight I’m keeping a beady eye on Codex Eldar, but I’ve otherwise no particular buying plan. Reckon it’ll just be “around payday, sniff around eBay and see what I can pick up for a decent price”.

I suspect some will be more expensive that others. Sisters of Battle for instance I’m kind of expecting a premium, as if memory serves it wasn’t out for long at all before 3rd Ed arrived. Quick check confirms my thinking entirely!

There may also be some Boot Fair Hunting once the weather warms up. It can be a good source of random stuff where the seller won’t necessarily know what they’re selling.

Ended up going the BIN route for a copy of Codex Eldar. Seems I wasn’t the only Sniper in the field!

£28.00 delivered isn’t too awful. Patience probably could’ve found a cheaper copy, but it’s still around £10 less than average asking price.

SoB was out for hardly any time at all. Shortest shelf life a Codex has ever had, up until the Custodes/Sisters of Silence books from 7th (IIRC).

Good luck on your quest. I believe I'm missing Codex: SoB, Codex: Assassins and Codex: Woofs.

SoB is almost certainly going to a Car Boot Sale Kauyon job.

If not, I can trawl Car Boots for cheapo models in otherwise good nick, eBay those and build up a war chest.

In fact…that’s actually a really bloody good idea for procuring the more expensive things, such as Titan Legions too. Use my knowledge of relative online value, buy low, sell middling, put the profit to more cost intensive treats.

IIRC SoBs were out for less than a year, the Codex Assassins book might be the hardest Codex to find since that was out for literally months.

There were also some campaign type books that go for a pretty penny now, but not sure if you're interested in them.

And sorry for my ignorance, but car boot sales are Craigs List/newspaper ad type things? That you guy from the back of a car trunk?

Yup. Usually on a Sunday morning, in a field, typically cold and muddy.

Some sellers are professional, but others are just folk having a clear out. You never know what will be there, but to give you an idea, people still find decent deals on rarer vintage Star Wars, Transformers etc.

Some will be a gold mine, others a complete bust.

Good luck on that quest, MDG!

I have found the prices vary massively, you can sometimes get a steal on the 'Bay (I paid £12 for the 2nd ed Chaos codex) but as it always the case with auctions it definitely helps to have an upper limit, and try and have the willpower to stick to it. Most of the books, with the exception of the two you have mentioned, seem to appear fairly frequently.

The Oldhammer, Oldhammer trading and 2nd edition FB groups are also sometimes worth a shot. I managed to get some fairly cheap original terminators on one of them just by making an appeal, and was overwhelmed by responses that came in a lot cheaper than eBay. I think if people know that you are a genuine collector and not just doing it to make money on resale, they are a lot more accommodating.

Finally if it's just rules you are after, there is a 2nd edition 'battle bible' (I think again its downloadable from those FB groups) which is a consolidation of all of the rule books and codecies, including an optional player community edit (which takes off a few of the more egregious imbalances, to help if you wanted to run tournaments etc.)

Codex Eldar has arrived! And it’s pretty much completely pristine.

I’ve had a very quick flick through during a visit to the Smallest Room, and I’d completely 100% forgotten that not only did it have rules for Exodites, but also Eldar Pirates.

Think I might do a thread in 40K general on using the Codex to write up an army list. Bit of info on the weapon rules, bit of history.

It's an excellent book!

There is so much in there - like you say you have the tail-end of 1st edition, where Eldar were almost a mercenary faction, but all of the 'modern' concepts of Eldar too.

And the distortion cannon results table! There was some serious tomfoolery to be had with that weapon.

Just the books.

Whilst a vintage army holds a certain appeal, with few if any units completely gone since 2nd Ed, it feels an unnecessary expense when modern equivalents don’t just exist, but exist in plastic.

In terms of progress? Here’s my list of Codecies, with those I own in bold.

Codex Imperial Guard
Codex Eldar
Codex Chaos

Codex Ultramarines
Codex Angels of Death
Codex Space Wolves
Codex Orks
Codex Tyranids
Codex Sisters of Battle

Others have mentioned Codex Assassins, but I don’t think that was 2nd Ed? Certainly the Temples come from 2nd Ed era, but I think their first Codex was 3rd, and introduced the Culexus?

So properly into collecting and I’m a third of the way there already. Unless, and we can never rule this out, I’ve just forgotten about some!

Just added Codex Tyranids, as a speculative eBay found one for £19 delivered. Praise the hive mind!

Assassins was 2nd edition, June 1997.

Necrons also had a white dwarf only codex (that was absurdly powerful, particularly against any faction unable to injure T8 2+ save models with their unaugmented bare hand attacks).

I keep forgetting Necrons had that very late White Dwarf army list!

A friend of mine is collecting that faction so we will have to give it a spin.

Yes that's very true - and the prices for some of the original miniatures now are becoming rather high.

I am taking an alternative approach and playing using modern or alternative minis (Artel W etc) - actually suits quite well as the points costing in 2nd edition meant that you can have a meaningful game with only a few squads, which suits my glacial painting pace!

They could be almost impossible to kill if they got in close, but until they did they were at very real risk of being shelled off the board despite their T5 and 2+ saves.

Don't forget Warhammer 40,000 Battles (the compilation book of WD articles and battle reports, which was the only place you could get the Razorback rules if you missed that issue).

There's also the Storm of Vengeance campaign pack, but that was scenarios and a card/bulkhead power plant. Still good for fluff though (Nazdreg's Piscina IV shenanigans ... which are historically important behind the scenes since they led to Battlefleet Gothic becoming an actual game)!

I presume you've got the Dark Millennium supplement with all the vehicle cards, psychic powers, excessively blinged-up templates, etc?

Assassins was 2nd edition, June 1997.

The thing about Codex Assassins is that there was a 2nd ed version you had to buy, and a 3rd ed version free with White Dwarf ... with the same cover art of an Eversor. Look for the 'golden wings' style of the 2nd ed Codex titles.

MDG, you may be thinking of the fact that the Culexus wasn't featured in its own White Dwarf article in 2nd ed, like the other three Assassin types. They saved him up for the 2nd ed Codex.

You're not the only person I've heard from who didn't believe the 2nd ed codex existed. Just goes to show how sneaky those Assassins are...

A.T. wrote:

IIRC Rick Priestley (?) said during 3rd edition that the Necrons were actually designed with 3rd edition in mind and he had a 'devil of a job retro-designing them' for their late 2nd ed appearance. I don't know if that squares with what I've heard elsewhere (i.e. down the metaphorical online pub) about 3rd's ruleset being a last-minute replacement for something else, though.

I had to buy the current guard codex to play a tournament and was planning to sell it afterwards as it will soon be out of date... but then I saw a job lot of 3 guard codexes for £12 on ebay... now I'm collecting all the guard codexes. I'll look out for mentions of the Emporer's Lads!
