Subject: Here we go again... Time to Regulate (the Plasma)
@gobert - Thanks gobert. These weren't helped by me remembering them as being in a different box for a couple of months.
@Olthannon - Thanks Olthannon. They're definitely a contrast to the green units I've put out before now.
@Captain Brown - Why, thank you, Cap'n. And thank you for tipping us over onto page 7
+ + +
I've been meaning to do a Sickly Pallor of Decay (SPoD) Plaguebearer unit ever since I completed a SPoD Poxbringer back in 2019, and followed it up with a SPoD Sloppity Bilepiper last year. There are also SPoD Nurglings on each base I've painted.
It's a fun variant colour scheme, just so my Daemons aren't a sea of green. I may well add a second unit in this scheme at some stage, as I know I've got more Plaguebearers kicking around somewhere, awaiting build and paint.
I'd've finished this unit sooner, but for two things - one, I was away for a week towards the end of July, and secondly I've been working with a friend of mine on starting a podcast. We've got 4 episodes in the can now (subject to editing), so we're hoping to launch soon. Mainly problem we've found so far, though, is sticking to an intended duration - but I guess that just means they'll make good background for painting sessions
What's up next? Well, I think I'm going to continue with "finishing off WIP stuff" while I decide what to build next. That means I'm looking at four options - finish the Haemotrope Reactor (2024); work up the two ruins from the 9th edition Command Starter (2022); finish the Thunderer (2022); finish the 5 BA Assault Intercessors & BA Bladeguard Lieutenant (2023). Not currently sure which.
In terms of building, I've got one more Plasma Generatorium to build; the Generatorum Hub to build; 10 more Necron Warriors to build; and 3 Tomb Blades to build, all as immediate options. Building the third PG is almost certainly going to happen this time round, as it is a simple build I can do while watching a Twitch stream. I should probably build my first unit of Tomb Blades, too, as I haven't got any of them in my Necrons yet. Probably the Gauss build for the first three.
Steps
Spoiler:
Key HR - Haemotrope Reactor
PB - Plaguebearers
PG - Plasma Generatorium
+ + +
PB - Basecoated the bases with P3 Cryx Bane Highlight (twice)
PG - Built the first Plasma Generatorium
HR - Picked out three large elbow pipes on the rear of the Reactor with Brass Scorpion.
PB - Drybrushed the bases with P3 Trollblood Highlight
PB - Drybrushed the bases with P3 Sickly Skin
PB - Picked out the bricks on the bases with Khorne Red
PB - Shaded the bases with Agrax Earthshade
PB - Picked out the hair of the severed heads carried by the champion with Black Templar
PB - Painted the edge rims with Abaddon Black (twice)
PB - Went over the maggots on one base, and the severed heads in the Champion's hand, with Reikland Fleshshade
PB - Went over the maggots with Seraphim Sepia
PB - Went over the skin on the severed heads with Athonian Camoshade.
PB - Picked out the standard's woodwork with Wyldwood.
PB - Realised there was a severed head on the standard, so went back and picked out the hair with Black Templar, then the flesh with Reiklad Fleshshade and Athonian Camoshade.
PB - Basecoated all swords & banner top with AP Speedpaint Talos Bronze. I swear this is more of a copper than what I was aiming for, but it'll do, Donkey.
PG - Built a second Plasma Generatorium
PB - Touched up the undercoat with Grey Seer
PB - Picked out leather strapping on standard & musician's pipes with Snakebite Leather.
PB - Went over the rest of the musician's instrument with Skeleton Horde
PB - Agrax'd all the Talos Bronze, to take down the shine a bit and add deeper shadows to the recesses.
PB - Basecoated the skin with a 1:2 mix of Fenrisian Blue & Lahmian Medium.
PB - Shaded the skin with a 1:2 mix of Druchii Violet & Lahmian Medium.
PB - Shaded specific wounds with neat Druchii Violet.
PB - Went back and re-basecoated some bits with Grey Seer.
PB - Went over any teeth with Skeleton Horde
PB - Picked out Fly Guy's tongue and that one dude's belly maggots with Reikland Fleshshade
PB - Leadbelcher'd a couple of rings on the standard
HR - Picked out some of the elements on the rim of the reactor with Warplock Bronze.
PB - Went over Fly Guy's tongue and that one dude's belly maggots with Seraphim Sepia
PB - Went over all the horns and claws with Black Templar.
Insert 1 week gap here... PB - Realised I wasn't keen on how the horns looked like that, so went over them again with Grey Seer.
PB - Went over all the horns with Reikland Fleshshade
PB - Went over the horns with Athonian Camoshade, twice.
PB - Shaded the eyesockets on everyone bar Fly Guy with Druchii Violet
PB - Picked out Fly Guy's eyes with Incubi Darkness
PB - Picked out everyone else's eyes with Ulthuan Grey
PB - Tactically applied Nihilakh Oxide to weapons & banner top
Pictures Sickly Pallor of Decay Plaguebearers
I should probably go back and add some Ulthuan Grey highlights to various points on the skin at some stage, but these guys are ready for the table at the moment.
Talos Bronze worked well for a metallic paint over a white basecoat, but I wouldn't describe it as a bronze - it looks far more like copper to me. Still, a dash of Agrax and some Nihilakh Oxide got things closer to how I wanted them to look.

@toasteroven - Thanks. It is one that I originally saw on a Warhammer YT painting video, so I'm not taking credit for it, but I do like the look
@inmygravenimage - Cheers graven. When it comes to Grandfather, a pustule is a pustule.
@gobert - Thanks gobert. In theory, you could probably do a Nurgle army where each unit is painted for a different form of disease or necrosis, but would it look good on the table?
+ + +
I had an idea what I was going to get finished next, and this definitely wasn't it. Still, progress is progress. Couldn't really get any traction with painting the Reactor or the Marines, but once these Tomb Blades were built, it was pretty simple to roll through into basing & undercoating them, then getting them painted.
I definitely want a word with whoever designed the Tomb Blade kit - both the Gauss Blasters and Shield Vanes would really benefit from a better way of attaching them, which is why the alignments on the three I've built might not be perfect.
Might try and do another post in a week or so, just showing off the "active" WIP models that are on the go, assuming I've not finished any of them by then.

There’s only one way to find out! Might make it easier to tell the difference between units, I think tzurks geometric daemons did that iirc.
Love how the tomb blades turned out, and I could not agree more about how much of a pita they are to assemble… and how easy they are to break! They do look cool though

@gobert - The plaguebearers could make for some... interesting research, though possibly not something to do when you've just eaten. Didn't realise the Tomb Blades were overly breakable - something to look out for when I have to transport them, I guess.
@Warboss_Waaazag - Thanks for the kind words.

Apparently, working on multiple things at once can be slower than just concentrating on one - who knew? Still, I've managed to finish off the Khorne Bloodmaster that originally showed up in here nearly three years ago, so it's good to see I can complete things in a timely manner.
I've picked up issues 2 & 3 of Combat Patrol, and gotten the Infernus Marines built and started - I'm going to paint them up as Mentor Legion, using a Contrast-centric approach, so we'll see how that plays out.
I've also found where the box of Fenrisian Wolves I bought in Q1 went, and built those over the last weekend. They're getting their bases sorted at present, then can get undercoated and under way. Hopefully I can get one of the two units finished off before another month has passed, but we'll see...

Spoiler:
At this point, I doubt I'm going to complete it this year - however, I'll give completing a row and a column the old college try. Of those, I think row 2 and, oddly, column C may be the ones to focus on, but we'll see how I get on in Q4.

@gobert - Thanks gobert. He isn't a bad sculpt at all, but I do wish I'd left him off the base to paint him. Would've made both painting the base and getting to parts of the model itself a lot easier.

I may have distracted myself from the Infernus Marines, but at least that means I've gotten something else done fairly quickly. I remembered a video I's seen on the Warhamer YouTube channel about painting Fenrisian Wolves with Contrast paints, and thought I'd take a crack at that.
I'll be honest, I'm pretty happy with the outcome - except for how few points a unit of Fenrisian Wolves takes up in a list. Apparently I'm up to 300 points of painted Space Wolves now, but that's three characters, a unit of Wolf Scouts, and a unit of Wolves, so hardly the most useful army...

I really should knuckle down and finish off the Infernus Marines next, but I'm also undertaking a #bigbrushchallenge with a friend of mine to paint the MotM Kruleboy, so he needs to get done by November 4th - and will handily fill up that "Any Model" square on my bingo card.
Latest field manual came out today - Necrons are 5 points more expensive than they were, and my general Imperial list went up by a net of 5 points, once I factor in the wolves.
Quick question, as I don't have the SM 'dex - are any of the weapons combinations that the Jump Pack Captain can be built with not currently allowed?

I may have continued to distract myself from the Infernus Marines, but I have at least finished off something else that's been in progress for a while - the Haemotrope Reactor I started before I moved house.
I have started preparing a dozen Poxwalkers - I've apparently got 28 painted at present, so adding another dozen will take me up to two full units, which seems a reasonable number for now, especially when I don't actually have any painted Death Guard yet.

Quicker update this time - I've finished the Miniature of the Month Kruleboy from a month or two back.
A friend and I have done what we call the #bigbrushchallenge - painting a model with the biggest brush you've got, along with a secondary large brush for metallics and a drybrush. I opted to go mostly with Contrast and Speedpaints for this model, as they can give even the newst of painters a decent result as long as you maintain your brush control.

I should probably have made a montage image there, rather than four individual shots. And, true to form, as soon as I take & post pictures, I spot some bits to touch up. Oh well...
And the skin there is the toned down version - I wasn't expecting Mantis Warriors Green over Wraithbone to look quite so much like toxic waste!

Subject: Re:Here we go again... 2024 Year in Review, and Plans for 2025
Well, given it's New Year's Day, this would seem to be a good time to look back on 2024, and have a think about plans for 2025 - even if I'll not be able to start executing on those plans for a couple more days.
2024
Safe to say that 2024 is a bit of a mixed bag of a year, from a hobby perspective. Moving house disrupted things in Q1, and overly warm weather disrupted things in Q3. Starting to record and edit a podcast has eaten up time (and I imagine the release of it will too, when I get that far), as has playing the likes of Vampire Survivors, Gloomhaven and Hades on my PC. I didn't manage to clear a single row or column on my Hobby Bingo card, despite clearing 13 out of 25 squares.
On the other hand, I finished 52 models, so I made it to a rate of 1/week. Those models translated to an additional 600 points, which doesn't seem a lot when you consider that's 7.5 units and two characters. I cleared four entries off my long-term GWWIP list, and only start 2025 with one new WIP on the "WIP at the start of the year" list. I've started to add a Khorne element to my Chaos Daemons, so I'm hoping they keep having a multiple-God list as an option.
In short, a reasonable number of successes, but balanced by not hitting some of the goals I set myself.
So, what's on the to-do list for this year?
- New year, new armies for 40k - Eldar & Tyranids
- New year, new army for 30k - Mechanicum
- New year, new armies for both 30k & 40k - Adeptus Custodes & Imperial Knights
- Add at least 1 power- or terminator-armoured model to my Death Guard - the Poxwalkers have to be led by something!
- Complete at least 1,500 points of models for 40k across all factions
- Paint at least 1 Blood Bowl team
- Complete a fecking 2023 Hobby Bingo card
- "Paint more than I purchase" - ("Yeah, right," say the studio audience) - End the year with fewer entries than I know of on my "WIP at the start of the year" list than I start the year with (14 entries on that list at the start of 2025; see below)
- Paint some non-GW models (probably Battletech and/or Burrows & Badgers)
Quite a few bits in there, especially if I'm talking starting five new armies. I'm not going to get excessive with my targets for those, though - a CHARACTER and two units will be deemed a success there, or a Dominus/Questoris Knight and a brace of Armigers for the Knights. I definitely have some colour scheme decisions to make, as well as an inventory to take - and the latter may end up being my next post. I'm sure some Dark Reapers have gone into hiding...
Look at it this way, though - if I have a lot of goals, it's a target-rich environment. I'm also not going to let these goals stop me from working on bits for my Guard, Necrons, Daemons, etc, if that's where the urge takes me.
If the line is in colour, it means it was in that state at the start of 2024, too - though elements may have progressed slightly since they first graced this list. If I find any more "WIP at the start of the year" items, I'll add them to the list as I go along - I'm sure I based & undercoaed OG Tigurius, for example.

Subject: Here we go again... 2024 Year in Review, and Plans for 2025
That’s a good haul for the year! The Tomb Blades would be my favourites of the things you’ve painted. Look forward to you plugging away at your targets for 2025!
Goberts Gubbins - P&M Blog, started with Oldhammer, often Blackstone Fortress and Void Panther Marines, with side projects along the way
@gobert - Thanks gobert. The Tomb Blades remain a weird design, but they were fun enough to paint. I do have another 3 to do at some point, though probably with different weapons.
+ + +
Taking Stock Talons of the Emperor The golden boys were the original army I was thinking of for a "New Year, New Army" (and/or "A Tale of One Wargamer") project, before I decided there were a couple of others I could work on as well. As a result, I picked up the previous Combat Patrol just as it was coming off sale, and I do have a few bits and pieces for them in stock as well - including a Trajann Valoris that was painted for me by a streamer a few years back. I may also do a bit of a write-up on this one on my blog in a "A Tale of..." style, so if anyone has suggestions for goals/challenges for later months (as the first four should be covered by "Paint old Combat Patrol", "Paint new Combat Patrol" to give me a solid core to the army), let me know. I'll probably add the Black Library pair to this first wave, too.
Wave 1
- Valerian and Aleya
- 3 Vertus Praetors (why is a weapon with a single shot called a Salvo Launcher?)
- 5 Custodes
- 10 Sisters of Silence (probably looking at 5 with swords and 5 with boltguns for now)
Other owned stuff
- 10 Sisters of Silence
- 5 Custodian Guard (somewhere)
Main question with the golden boys is whether I do my "layers of sepia over Chrome" process for their armour, or just start with a spray of Retributor Armour as their undercoat...
Eldar I've been quietly acquiring bits of Eldar for a while - some bargain box sets, some eBay acquisitions of various metal sculpts, the occasional MTO. I know I don't rally want to use an established Craftworld colour scheme, but I've not really had the bolt of inspiration on a Craftworld scheme. So I'll probably be starting with Aspect Warriors - I've got a 5 model unit of Howling Banshees ready to prep, and will be looking to get the Striking Scorpion Miniature of the Month to add to the Blades of Khaine box I picked up before it got repackaged.
- 3 Metal Farseers
- Metal Maugan Ra (best Maugan Ra...)
- Bonesinger
- 5 Metal Warlocks
- Blades of Khaine (10 plastic Striking Scorpions)
- 2 Warp Spider Exarchs
- 18 Metal Warp Spiders
- 3rd ed metal Dark Reaper Exarch
- 5 most-recent-metal Dark Reapers, inc. Exarch
- 5 Metal Rangers
- 2 metal Guardian weapon crew?
- Wraithseer
- Winged Autarch
- 3 Windriders
- Plastic Farseer
- 3 Wraithlords
- War Walker
- 25 Wraithguard
- 2 Spiritseers
- 10 Guardians
- Wave Serpent
I'm sure I got a unit of each metal version of the Dark Reapers off eBay, but I'm not 100% where I've put the 2nd and 3rd ed units. More searching required...
Imperial Knights I've owned assorted boxes for Imperial Knights for a while, but have only ever gotten to part-building a brace of Armigers - I'm not sure whether that's due to dithering about magnets, or what. Still, as with the Custodes, these have the advantage of being useful in 30k or 40k - well, other than the Dominus-class, for some daft reason.
- 2 part-build Armiger Helverins
- Cerastus Knight Castigator
- Cerastus Knight Acheron
- Knight Castellan
- 2 Armiger Helverins
- Knights Renegade (looks like a pair of Wardens, but I haven't opened the box yet - can anyone confirm?)
I thought I had one of the more recent boxes of Armigers for a couple of Warglaives, but I'm not sure which box it is in if I did.
Mechanicum This one's the easiest to account for - for the Mechanicum I've made two purchases so far, or three if you include the army list book. I acquired the Mechanicum Battle Group box from Element Games, and thanks to a voucher for enduring the new GW website, I ordered an Archmagos Prime to lead them. That gives me the following units to work through, though at time of writing I'm unsure of which weapon options I'll pick.
- Archmagos Prime
– 20x Adsecularis Tech-thralls
– 6x Thallax
– 1x Triaros Conveyor
– 2x Castellax Battle-automata
Not entirely sure on the colour scheme yet - do I tie it to a Legion, or keep it independant?
I think I'll aim to paint all of this one this year, and don't currently plan to add to it until this batch is complete.
Tyranids It's been a while since I've considered a Tyranid army, but having picked up Leviathan I have the start of one. I've also picked up a few bits from Combat Patrol, the Space Marine 2 starter, and the Battle for Macragge reprint, as well as the odd box on sale - though I won't be counting the Space Hulk Genestealers. That should give me the following as a starting point:
- Tyranid Prime x2
- Neurotyrant with 2 Neuroloids x1
- Screamer-Killer x1
- Psychophage x2
- Von Ryan's Leapers x6
- Barbgaunts x10
- Neurogaunts x22
- Termagants x40
- Ripper Swarms x3
- Genestealers x6
- Spore Mines x8
No definite plans on a colour scheme yet - thinking a not-listed Hive Fleet, rather than one of the known ones. One of the Psychophages is built, so that may be Project #1 for this force.
Non-GW Stock Take Battletech Safe to say I'm at the start of my journey with Battletech, though I've enjoyed it so far. I have a version of the "A Game of Armoured Combat" boxed set (though without the ilClan material), along with a couple of Force Packs I've picked up when seeing them on discount. I may also be waiting on delivery of things from the Mercenaries Kickstarter, so my to-do list here is going to grow even if I buy nothing else this year.
As things stand, I think that means I have the following Mechs:
Spoiler:
A Game of Armoured Combat
- Locust
- Commando
- Shadow Hawk
- Wolverine
- Catapult
- Thunderbolt
- Awesome
- Battlemaster
Burrows & Badgers I've really liked this line of figures ever since I ran into them at UK Games Expo a number of years back - and ended up coming away with a Roman Tortoise. Since then I think I've backed every Kickstarter I've seen, and therefore have quite a backlog.
One thing I need to do though, at a minimum, is get all the B&B figures into one container, rather than them being scattered across a number of boxes. Once I've done that, then I can do a proper stock take, though I know there are a couple of outstanding WIPs I should probably deal with first.

@gobert - Intimidating as that list is, it's worth noting that it doesn't cover everything just the new projects for this year. Nor does it take into account the Battletech mercenaries stuff that arrived in January...
@inmygravenimage - I figured it was worth it to at least understand where I'm starting from with these projects, and to encourage me to find everything, even if I'm sure some of the Eldar bits are still in hiding. On the upside, I found the part-built Armigers, so I suspect I know what's on deck first for the Knights.
+ + +
Not a 10k run - I'm not that foolish. But I have now reached the heady heights of 10k posts here on Dakka, and it's only taken me ~15.33 years. Nice little milestone, though I note it doesn't come with a plaque like hitting certain subscriber counts over on YouTube.
I have been working on bits & pieces in January, though I'll hold my hands up to getting distracted by both Vampire Survivors and Ballionaire on my laptop. With both games back up to 100% achievements, though, I can park them and try to get some hobby work done.
It's mainly been a build month, and one that's seen me take steps forwards with the Talons of the Emperor and the Mechanicum, as well as finishing building a couple of other kits. I definitely need to do a basing session this week, and get some stuff undercoated, though.

Pictures Almost everything built since my last post - the Jump Pack Captain had moved to another room ready for basing
That Archmagos Prime was crazy fiddly, especially the Conversion Beamer. I'm kinda concerned about how some of the smaller mechandendrites will stay on, though additional parts may give them more shelter than they had earlier in the build process.
Next on the build side of thing will probably be my first 5 Custodian Guard - I think this will be a Guardian Spear unit, given that's the classic option, and I'll probably sword & board the next squad (with a Vexilla in each).
I really do need to get something finished soon, though.

It looks like you're making good progress. I personally love having finished models, but balk at the whole "having to build and paint them first" part. I blame my brain.
@gobert - Thanks gobert. It's never the most fun of jobs, but it needs doing.
@Warboss_Waaazag - Progress is progress, after all. I get that not every step is enjoyable, and sometimes you need to find that motivation. It often feels easier when you can leave stuff set up to work on - which means I probably need to take a look at the table in my hobby room again, rather than working on a tray in my bedroom...
@Zambro - Thanks for the kind words.

And we're off! I'm (mostly) out of Build Mode, and into Paint Mode, with this post marking the first completion of the year (with a couple of other sets close to done).
Some of the steps below might seem a little odd - such as why I've concentrated on the Vexilla's shield for the Custodian Guard. Given I was starting with a different undercoat to that I used on Valerian, I wanted to check that I was happy that the eventual gold was close enough to how Valerian ended up looking. As things stand, I'm not seeing a major tonal difference, so I'm happy to work through the steps on the sheild to work up the armour for the Custodian Guard squad.
Even better - no faces on the Custodians, so no need to worry about skintone
On the other hand, in 2024 I completed 48 models, and they ended up being worth 605 points. I've completed one model in 2025, and I'm already on 110 points. Something feels off here...
