The joy of Custodes, each one is almost a squad of something else! Valerian looks good, looking forward to seeing what is next

@Captain Brown - Hey, you've got to start somewhere...

@gobert - Thanks, gobert. Fortunately, what's next appears to be some friends for Valerian, as we'll see below.

+ + +

With Valerian out of the way, you might've thought Aleya was the sensible next choice to make progress on, but as I haven't decided on what I want to do with SoS armour yet, that wasn't the case.

Instead, I've worked through a unit of Custodian Guard for Valerian to lead - I definitely prefer the spear poses to the sword & board looks, and not just because the swords are silly chonky.

Steps
Spoiler:

CG - Custodian Guard
GH - Generatorum Hub
WK - Wight King
+ + +
CG - Drybrushed the Custodes with VMA Chrome
CG - Went over the armour with three layers of Seraphim Sepia

CG - Went over the plumes with Grey Seer (twice)
CG - Painted the plumes with Leviathan Purple
CG - Rebasecoated the scroll-y bits on the Vexilla with Wraithbone (thrice - it didn't want to go on smoothly over the Leadbelcher, but that could just be my pot of the stuff, so YMMV)
CG - Went over the Wraithbone with Skeleton Horde
CG - Lightly drybrushed the helmet plumes with Fenrisian Grey
CG - Built the bases
CG - Picked out some metal details on the torsos with Leadbelcher, as well as tidying up some metals on the Guardian Spears
CG - Washed the new Leadbelcher with Nuln Oil
CG - Undercoated the bases with Chaos Black spray
GH - Undercoated the Generatorum Hub with Leadbelcher spray
CG - Picked out all the leather with Mournfang Brown

CG - Basecoated the Guardian Spear blades with Sotek "Green"

CG - Washed the leather with Agrax Earthshade
CG - Applied two coats of Black Templar to the Guardian Spears

5 Custodian Guard

Next on deck should probably be finishing off those two Hivestorm heavy rubble piles, as well as working on the Generatorum Hub. I've got 11 Neurogaunts ready to base, along with some of the stuff I built in January, so I should probably see about sorting that too, as well as building 5 Custodes Wardens and a Skitarii Marshal.

Lovely set of Custodes, I’m a sucker for purple and gold! The blue on their spear blades is really nice, is it really just a coat of sotek green!? Looks blue to my old eyes

@Zambro - Thanks for the kind words, Zambro. I'm not taking credit for the colour combination, though - the gold/purple combination is meant to represent the Aquilan Shield group within the Custodes, and it seemed the simplest scheme to replicate

@gobert - It's a smooth coat of Sotek "Green" (which is a bit of a misnomer to me), with a Nuln Oil pass over the top. Depending on your undercoat, you might need a couple of passes for the Sotek to sit smoothly, though - it didn't seem keen on behaving over Leadbelcher, for example.

+ + +

Another pair of pieces completed - I'm not going to argue that two rubble sections should probably be quicker than this, but at least they're done. And in getting them done, I've settled on colours for other elements within that box, which in theory should make painting other pieces from it quicker.

Not that I should really make a start on any until I've finished other WIPs off, anyway.

Two heavy rubble sections from Operation: Hivestorm

Rubble with a Bloodmaster, for scale

Next on the to-do list is a unit of 5 Custodian Wardens, including Vexilla. This will allow me to check the Talons off my 2025 goal list, as they'll be the second unit for my "two units and a character" goal for the faction.

I do want to get Aleya and the two SoS units done as well, but they kinda fall under the heading of "bonus content", and I should probably make progress on a second faction before I return to them - unless I have a sudden bout of inspitation for how I want Aleya to come out, at least, given she's already part-painted.

I'll probably also try to continue some progress on Stilts and on the ArchMagos Prime, as well as seeing if I can get the Marshal based and undercoated.

Loving the rubble, Hivestorm is such a cool set of terrain. Have fun painting up the rest!

@graven - Thanks graven. There's one spot on the first picture where the Agrax has pooled that I should probably clean up, and I would like to try out some Ratling Grime and whats-his-name's Sewer for a bit more variance, but at least the ruins are usable right now.

@Captain Brown - "Rolling" might be over-egging the pudding slightly, but at least I'm making some progress again

@Zambro - For something like the terrain in the Hivestorm Set? Use the biggest brush you feel comfortable with when painting sections (though use a detail brush when you need to). Drybrushing will often be your friend. Spend a little time before you start mapping out what elements of the buildings will be which colours (as this will filter down to the smaller rubble). Don't be afraid to throw some Shade at it when you think you're done to tie everything together via grime (no, not the music).

@Gobert - There are definitely some fun bits in it, that's for sure. I think I mentioned that I got this as an eBay lot from someone parting out Hivestorm, so I ended up with the equipment stuff as well - at least one piece from which will be seeing use in an upcoming little project.

+ + +

Mental note - find more uses for Hashut Copper. I can't recall what I used for ahead of these Hivestorm rubble piles, but I'm finding it a really good metallic to provide contrast with. Shame it takes two coats over black, but we can't have everything, now, can we?

Definitely bounced aound the houses here - initial intent was to get the Wardens finished off quickly, but I've ended up bouncing between a number of bits and pieces over the last couple of months.

@Captain Brown - Thanks, Cap'n, though I think that would be older content.

@gobert - Yeah, Talons armies seem to grow quite quickly. I am going to change focus now, though, given my goals for the year featured five new armies (and a Blood Bowl team), and only one of those things is done so far. On the other hand, Aleya is WIP, while I have two SoS units built and in need of basing, though I do need to figure out the colour scheme I want to use for them.

Skitarii Marshal

Right, that's one of the Mechanicus units ticked off the list - next on the deck will be the bases of Nurglings I picked up at UK Games Expo, as they should be pretty quick. May also work on Stilts at the same time, but we'll see. Have also dug out and dusted off the Convergence of Dominion faction terrain for the Necrons, with a view to trying to close off some longer-term WIP items.

This is, emphatically, why I will continue suggesting nuking Guard and starting over again. It's a legacy army that needs to be rebooted with a new focal point.

Confirmation of why no-one should listen to Kanluwen when it comes to the IG - he doesn't want the IG, he want's Kan's New Model Army...

Always good to have a bit of a collab!

The Marshall turned out great, especially that red cloak!
