I know its often been debated before, But I've got a concern that the 3 pie plate spewing armored vehicles I want to field with my squishy Imperial grunts will be the subject of disdain when I flop them on the table. How would you feel to see three pie plates on the table??

Three pie plates? That depends if you brought ice cream and are going to share.

I wouldn't begrudge you three pie plates. Hell, I was under the impression they were necessary to make basic (non-drop, non-mech) IG work.

"The last known instance of common sense happened at a GT. A player tried to use the 'common sense' argument vs. Mauleed to justify his turbo-boosted bikes getting a saving throw vs. Psycannons. The player's resulting psychic death scream erased common sense from the minds of 40k players everywhere. " - Ozymandias

They're only cheesy when you've been keeping all three templates inside your cheetos bags. That way if some sore loser starts crying about your pie plates, you can just shove one in their mouth and say "There now you have a cheesy pie plate too, now STFU."

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

In 2000 three probably won't even cut it.

That debate is outdated since the new rules that have been in effect. It is no longer considered "cheesy". Besides, opponents that complain about your army being cheesy are pathetic cowards or uninspired defeatists. If they really think that 3 ordnance weapons in an IG army are that unbeatable or unfair, they are playing the wrong lists. Request them to think outside their box and design their army to counter the pie-fest or just deal with it.

Is it me or do 3 pie plates ever kill anything? the best I have ever done with 3 pie plates is kill 2-3 marines at once. 2/3 of the time they scatter off 3 inches or so or miss the vehicle now getting 1/2 strength. Id rather shoot with my Leman Russes and with Guard BS thats saying alot.

Does anyone else have that problem with ordinance?

A new day, a new time zone.

Tanks are the standard Heavy support choice for IG, and the only time they're possibly cheesy is if you do your best to cram three of them into a very small point list.

Anyone who says it is cheesey for gaurd to take tanks is a slow. that is like saying marines taking too many marines is cheesey. tanks are what IG are about. its like Orcs and choppas, chaos and spikes, eldar and rainbows.

I ALWAYS take three tanks in heavy support, and i usually take three hellhounds too. The gaurd need their tanks to take objectives, charge block, and pound their enemies into dust.

if they complain about that, just load up on 25 las cannons and then listen to them cry.

Gaurd are incapable of being cheesy, they are gaurd.

Well personally I have never minded the 3 pie plates of doom IG army, it was only ridiculous in 1000 point armies or when you ran into the 3 to 4 pie plate Chaos army because of Demonic Possession.

I have even played a Tau list, with 3 hammer heads against Tyranids and frankly that was alot more cheesy than an IG with 3.

I would also chime in that its cheesy in very small games. I would also say that any army the takes a few minimal troop choices and then loads up on heavy support in very small games is cheesy. At 1500 points, you have nothing to fear.

If the shot hits a dispersed unit, I can normally count on killing ~2 models, so 3 battle cannons on average will kill about 4 models.  When your shooting at 6 men las/plas squads, they do fine.

When they pay off is when they are shooting at bunched up units, like a demolisher cannon on some deep striking terminators, or battle cannon on veiled immortals, etc.

Another time they work really well is when they assault one of my many tanks, it's always nice to drop one on a group of beserkers bunched up infront of a chimera.

i have plyaed guard for over 1 1/2 years now. i can fit 120 infantry models, 3 hellhounds, 2 chimeras, 2 leman russ, and 1 basilisk into a n 1850 point game. you want cheese you just watch as my army can reduce any marine army into dust in one shooting phase. we are guard. we are the hammer of the emperor. our tanks will pound you into dust while you drown on the blood of the men and women of the imperium.

sure people will cry cheese but thats only because your winning

3 isn't cheesy.

15 of them, all firing Infernus Shells, like in a DKoK Siege Army, now that's cheesy!

When are 3 cheesy? Never.....hell my Orks take a looted Basilisk at 500 points every chance I can just to scare people. Nothing is cheesy about it. It's one of the few strengths that the IG have. Guess what?....Come Apocalypse I'm running 10 Leman Russes, a Baneblade, a few Chimera squads and some hell hounds at 3000 points. Is that cheesy? Hell no......read the stories. IG are ALL about bit groups of tanks and I'm glad I can finally field them.

You flatter me. But really, I'm just an ordinary guy. I put my pants on the same way anybody else does: I put a gun to the head of my manservant and bark Russian military commands at him until the poor blighter either figures it out or watches his brains exit his forehead.

Heh only when the person that has the 3 pie plates says "oh I want to make a little rule that nobody can assault or use drop pods until turn 4." Scary that I actually heard that.

I remember one horrible horrible 2000pt game against a friend's gaurd. My rokkits pinged off his tanks, never even scoring a glance, and his pie plates were unerringly accurate, shattering my mobs by turn three. I started with nearly 150 models in play, and by turn 3 I was down to 50 or so...
But they aren't really cheesy. The opposite could also have been true (Ie. uncannily accurate and destructive rokkits, crappy not hitting ordinance)
I wouldn't call them useless though. i wish they'd bring back the guessing rules.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Imperial Guard need their Heavy support more than any other army. To take two or less means the the game is very small ,the army list has been mesed up or it is a concession to a newbie.

Remember that you can now take heavy mortars, three pie plates (weaker GEq killers though) per HS or even Elites slot.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

My Mordians have 3 Basilisks, 3 Hellhounds, 11 Lascannons, and 10 Heavy Bolters. I have run this list for a while now, and it seems to work great. The pie-platey goodness, gives you the ability to make the game a little more balanced with it's unpredictability. I am a staunch supporter of three pie plates. Not cheese.

In small games (1k points) yes they are a bit over the top.

In games of 1,500 ar above, all bets are off.

Considering 'cheese' is usually a title given by people who have just lost a game either due to their own mistakes or simply because the person they were playing was better than them, I'd say 'never' is the answer to this threads question.

Are the 3 pie-plates legal? If the answer is yes, then there is no problem.

They're only cheesy when you use them in conjunction with loaded scatter dice.

I thought I disd a reply to this already. It must have been lost in the warp.

Only up to a point. The fact remains there is a lot of genuine imbalance. 3x Holofalcons, 8x TMC lists. To lose to one of those doesnt necessarily indicate inferior thinking, nor does complaining about them make you a sore loser.

I'm a little late to this one but there are a couple of lists that push the boundrys - 3 monoliths in a 1250pt game comes with a mild edam flavour

But I can't think of any guard list that could remotely be considered cheesy - most IG forces taste like treacle pudding
