From Bell of Lost Souls
5th Edition
Finally on to 5th edition. We have heard more corroborating information from several sources confirming GW as the source of the "mystery document". That is, it was not a fan-made hoax, but instead an early play-test document that got out. This would seem to mesh with some of the more "recent" changes we have heard about that are not in the doc, as they would be revisions that are shaking out of later development process. More as we get it.
Well if this is true, then there is still hope that the game won't be totally ruined. Phew!

They have to be finished with the rules by now (and I have it on pretty good authority that they are done) in order to have the product out by summer.
While the leaked PDF is indeed an old version (which was rather obvious from the lack of diagrams and pictures) they have finalized the rules at this point so no amount of feedback posted on any forum is going to change the final product.

Of course that implies that GW actually listen to what their playtesters tell them.

If this was an "early" version and assuming the doc wasn't tampered with, GW only spends ~6 months making a new rulebook. They take longer working on codices.

If the 5th edition rules are done and ready for printing, why would GW "officially leak" the PDF?
Any and all gross errors couldn't be corrected and necessary changes could not be made.
Why piss people off for no positive gain?
There's got to be a chance that some changes and/or additions could still be made.
Right?

That's my hope. I don't think GW intentionally leaks their books; particularly this one, which is clearly old and much less complete than the three codex PDFs which leaked least year.

If GW cared about the players' thoughts, why would they go about secretly playtesting the rules? I forget if Wizards allowed people to publicly playtest, but Decipher did with its Star Wars CCG. MMOs do it all the time with their open betas.

On the other hand, the final version of Orks included all the typos, nonsensical special rules for units that can't use them, etc.
I know this is at a less complete state, but I still wouldn't bet on anything being corrected.

Those other games use it to build up hype and PR.
GW's approach to 5th edition is much more akin to a movie studio who refuses to show the movie to critics before its general release.

Odd that you say that, since general bug-reports/comments make their way into games (so it's not just a hype-machine). And, you'd think GW would enjoy building up hype and PR to go along with their stores in malls.
But yeah, I guess if I were GW I'd probably want those sucke- players to build their shoota boys first before buying slugga boys later.

No, GW is a company in the first place that needs to make money:
New rules means new armies, means selling new models, means making money.
Its not about the specific kind of rules in the first place.

I believe GW is trying (very clumsily) to preview the direction that 5th Edition is headed, as it's going to be a major change (in playing goals, not playing mechanics). This way, people have some notice that grinding for VPs should not be the be-all, end-all of gaming.
As usual, GW cocks it up when this could have been a golden opportunity.
If Jervis really had his gak together, he wouldn't have pontificated on Archetypes in Standard Bearer, he would have started a series of 40k5 preview articles, starting with Objectives and talking about the whole Scoring Troops / Objectives business.
Then he can spend a Standard Bearer talking about Vehicles.
And so on.
If he does this for the next 4 to 6 months, with a recap at the end coinciding with the final preview prior to next months' release, the whole thing is much better received.
You know, kind of like how WotC is building hype by previewing the upcoming DnD4 release scheduled for GenCon...
It is amusing how 40k3 / DnD3 came out around the same time, along with "40k4" / DnD3.5, and now both are pushing the new summer release (40k5 / DnD4). And it is amazing how WotC manages to do such a great job of the communications while GW totally screws it up. DnD4 has at least as much revolution and change as 40k5, but I don't see their fanbase up in arms.

@JohnHwang: Well they did make a series of preview articles for 4th edition. I forget how early they made them. I seem to remember the articles appearing a good 5-6 months before the release, so we'll know soon enough if 5th edition's coming by summertime.

I hope that the leaked PDF was a very early and GW has seen the errors of many of its rules. If that was the direction 5th ed was going. Its going to be 4th ed for me for a very long time, even if I have to just play by myself.

I think GW will nail it with 5th edition and do an excellent job. Additionally, many of the odd things (from the perspective of 4th edition) in the new codices starting with DA will become crystal clear and make sense.
Jervis has won me over, over time. I'm critical of 40K now to the extent that I've put away my stuff and won't take it out again before 5th edition. Point is, I'm no fanboy. the proof is in the ruleset, and these last few releases + the general trends in the leaked 5th ed. pdf lead me to conclude they're tightning things up smartly.
Flame me if you like. I"m on my way to a barbeque anyhow....
