After yesterdays announcement I've heard lots of angry rhetoric on the BI forum and was curious how the contributors of of this forum feel. Since Dakka Dakka is a mostly TT wargaming oriented site, many members may not play rpg's. It is your opinion I would like to hear, be it indifference or outrage.
Personally, my trust and confidence in Games Workshop is quite shaken.

Im already in contact with my gaming shop to pre-order the remaining 2 books so that I can create the game that I have been looking forward to for a long time. It is really disappointing that this had to happen, but we all know that GW Corporate has little in the way of business savvy so it does not overly surprise me

I have my copy. It's a great game. It's reasonably complete as is, it'll get a few more supplements and I'll get many years of awesome gaming out of it.

I'm disappointed that it won't get more support and we won't have future books. Overall though, I'm not outraged. It's a great product. With luck, I'll be getting second copy next week when my Amazon order ships. (I picked up one copy from my FLGS on the day of release at 9am, it was sold out by 11.)

I'm very upset and torn on this issue. I've been waiting for a 40k P&P RPG for so long it's ridiculous. To have it finally delivered only to be told "Nope, not gonna do it" is such a slap in the face. I want so bad to boycott GW for this, but deep down I know I won't. I'll suck it up with all the other these guys have dished us and continue being a fanboi. I hate life...

Is there an emo Orkmoticon? Cuz I need one right now.

I'm pretty baffled. But on the whole it's just typical GW head-in-the-sand-arse-in-the-air-gaking-on-customers behaviour.

Where is the announcement? I was going to pick the game up, but I don't have it pre-ordered. Am I screwed?

Based on the comments, I assume that DH will be limited to the three announced books and that's it. A bit premature to determine the lifespan of a system. I'd like to see the announcement, so I can be better educated about the issue.

I didn't see an announcement either. I saw a thread here on Dakka and called my FLGS and they said "Yup, it's out and we're sold out." Came out like 2 weeks before they stated on their website.

Just interested in when Specialist Games is getting hold of it and sets up the free PDF.

If not, as it being an RPG, what company is going to pick up the material and go to work rereleasing it.

Other then a mild interest, it is just more of my money that GW won't be getting. Thier freaking loss.

As an old RPG'er, who sold off all his stuff years ago when he got into 40k (going on 10 years or so), I was anxiously awaiting this release. If for nothing else than the material, the read, and the possibility of actually kicking off an RPG in a setting that has great backstory (not to mention I know a lot of it now).

I ordered a copy late on Amazon, and can only hope they can come through.

I'm disappointed, but not totally outraged. It certainly doesn't inspire confidence in anything GW does (or says) going forward.

Leaves me, personally, unaffected. My RPG days are long gone.

However, it confirms my opinion of the management at GW... Either they are complete greedy barstewards ore the company is totallly down the pan to the effect that they can't even afford the single salary & outsourcing costs that it would require to "support" BI.

My money is on the latter.

Which I have been doom-mongering about since 2004...

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Actually I doubt this is a GW decision, it sounds to me like too much good sense.

Black Industries have done the right thing. RPG's sell core books, buit after that most add ons have rapidly diminishing returns. Even D&D doesnt sell well beyond the core books.

Therefore the decision to produce only a few core books, then cease publication is a sou8nd financial plan. Make the sales and then cut back to a more profitable line, the novels.

Dark heresy will still be supported, online, however the scenarios and supplements will be fan driven and as they wont interfere with future releases (there wont be any past the initial core books) the fans can own the game.

Meanwhile BI gain out of traffic to their site, with ancilary sales of novels. Rush buyers now and a tight product run. The other advantage of this method of business is that the company can guage response before orderring another publication run. So they will not be left with unsold stock from the printers.

Finally the decision to cease is reversible, if they see a good cost analysis on a product or two later on, and they can make those decisions with the benefit og hindsight based on the traffic on the forum BI are building for the game.

All in all a low investment, steady profit venture. BI have a sound business plan, I wish I could say the same for GW.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

Well, I'd had half an eye on it since it was announced, and then when I found out they'd killed their overnight success product I immediately ordered a copy from Amazon.

I'm just miffed that we won't get the Deathwatch expansion...

Well it made me actually pick it up. I was on the fence since I've been burned with unplayable games before (looking at YOU Inquisitor) but good reviews on Dakka + the possiblitly I may never again be able to get it made me pony up.

Amazon US lists it as in stock BTW. $35

I just felt robbed about the whole thing. I bought my 50 dollar book at my LGS, just to find out the rest of the project was being cancelled. Maybe because I got caught up in it, and this is truly a book people have waited on for years. Plus, the fan feedback couldn't be better. Sales couldn't be better. What was the decision based on? WFB sales? When is GW going to realize that 40K is the real goldmine IP for their company!?! After Warhammer Online is a (potential) failure, will they give up on a 40K MMORPG as well? Oh, and good luck dethroning Blizzard. They make more sales in a month than GW makes in a year... Plus, they sniped Mark Gibbons for "The Rise of the Liche King" concept art.

Oh, and fan supported is not supported. I don't need to read the fiftieth thread about "my Space Marine Build" on the BI forums. If I wanted to make my own game, I'd have ported d20 Modern years ago. I wanted further expansions with the quality of Dark Heresy. Plus, fan support is just rules, no new art.

You can say all you want about this being a sound business decision, but all this does is have customers lose faith in GW. GW had a real chance at synergy with a varied group of gamers here. I know the word synergy is a buzzword that usually means nothing, but here, it is actually real. I'll use an example from Privateer Press.

They need to take one out of the PP playbook. Every article, book, expansion written by Privateer Press expands on the world they have created. No Quarter has RPG articles, hobby articles, Warmachine articles, and Hordes articles. All interested gamers can read these articles and get something out of them for their respective game. Synergy, for real. I bought White Dwarf since US228, and I actually passed on it this month, first since then. WD is nothing but one big ad for the latest release. I leaf through it once, and put it on the shelf. No Quarter, I pretty much read cover to cover. How can a small company, without any of the resources of the megamonolithic GW, manage it?!? I can only shake my head.

Myabe I am pissed because I thought GW was picking up on this. Dark Heresy could have pulled RPG people back in to wargaming. There was so much buzz about Deathwatch, and now, it is all smoke. I was really hoping to see WD turn out Index Astartes articles with some add-on RPG rules on the last page. Hope truly is the first step on the road to disappointment.

In the end, the decision was made well before the release to can the project, it had to have been, regardless of initial sales. If that is true, then why greenlight the project in the first place?

How big is this game, Dark Heresy? People are clamoring over their LGS and online sites to get the book before they are all gone, knowing it has been cancelled. I am just shell shocked at the whole thing. I have put away my Ork Spearhead, and am clearing my head with some Trollbloods.

If I had to guess, the reason there was no 40k RPG for so long and this one was killed so fast was GW's business model.

GW is NOT a rules company.

GW is NOT an IP/licensing company, yeah they do some video games, tee shirts and like but no movies, cartoons, action figures or other big money stuff.

GW sells miniatures.

That's how they see their business that's how they want it.

Games like RPGs that require no minis, or like Necromunda that sell few are not in GW's interests. They want to have compelling interesting worlds and storylines that drive miniature sales.

Letting fans enjoy their world without buying figures, paint, terrain etc canibalizes their own products.

At least that's my guess of how they see things in Nottingham.

So Dark Heresy isn't a minatures-based RPG like DnD?

Not really. I found that using miniatures and a grid did help make combat run smoother (I ran it tonight and tried combat both with minis and a grid and without), but they're not necessary. You can use a die or a pog just a well as a miniature anyway.

No character generation system (other than make some #$&% up). Overly specific hit location system. No balance (other than have the GM make some $#@% up to balance it). 54mm figures that cost $20-$30 and don't match my terrain. Little or no out of combat skills...

I wasn't even tempted to play it. Pretty art though.

Inquisitor was a classic example of the "fat and lazy" crap that brought GW down.

It got released because some designer produced some half-assed rules and they guys in the studio had some fun with it so it got released. Back in the late '90's that was all that was necessary for GW to bring out a new game. Somehow they thought that would be sufficient to sell a load of massively expensive 54mm models...

If you are a 40k fluff-nut then it has its positives, but it isn't really playable out the box. Not without a load of extra work by the GM - and no-one I ever knew had the time for all that malarky.

I have heard of some who persevered and used it with 28mm models, but it still requires more House Rules to make work than you could shake a stick at.

There is a possiblity that they did it on purpose.
You know the old story. Generate interest, sell them like they are the last, then when people themselves generate more interest, they go back and reprint the " Anniversery version", or the" Directors cut", or the "2nd edition..."

LOL

Not like we haven't seen it before.

By the way, How much do Rogue Trader, Lost and the Damned, and Slaves to Darkness go for again?
