I have been playing 'Crimson: Steam Pirates' on the iPad, and I must admit, it is such a great turn based little naval app that it actually makes me a bit more interested in DreadFleet.

Highly suggest iPad owners check it out if naval is your cup of tea.

So a serious question, sorry if it's already addressed in the thread- but based on recent GW releases, when would the likely pre-order date be?

IFF this game is coming out in October, then by their current schedule it will appear in WD followed by pre-orders in the last week in the month.

I am actually doubting it sells out. It isn't space hulk, and no one knows it's coming out.

I believe the game youre talking about is called "Crimson: Steam Pirates"?

It was published by Bungie (designers of Halo)

Its free and its a good game.

I'm actually quite interested in it, although I know I'm probably in the minority...

I'll agree with that, Space Hulk sold really well, but even it didn't sell out. They still have copies laying around languishing somewhere at GW. They were both selling them and giving them away as prizes at Games Day 2010 which was more than 6 months after release to their web store and retailers, then pulling the remaining copies weeks later from their own stores and selling them on the web again. Without the mass appeal of the 40K minis in Space Hulk, how many copies total can we imagine this game is projected to sell? It is definitely a niche product even with the buzz over it being a limited release. I'd love to see the marketing projections for this project.

Well, they could be going the route of the recent White Dwarfs... only make just enough to sell out instantly

I cant imagine that they will see any real profit if they only do a small run of these. After all they have to cut molds for the plastics etc. Print the rules, have boxes made etc. There are a lot of factors here where making a limited number is going to cost a lot more than making a lot in terms of the final cost to profit ratio for GW. I wonder if Robin Cruddycrap had anything to do with the rules. If he did i will wager that sails will drop when prospective buyers see his name.

That's not necessarily an indicator of how well it sold, though. GW often hold back stocks of limited edition product to flog off at Games Day. They've been doing it with the various 'limited edition' miniatures for at least a decade now.

I'm now wondering if that floating duckie might be part of the whole dread fleet stuff....

I believe that is in fact the "code name" they came up with for this release.

Hulk was, IIRC, "Blue Harvest"

So they used the same code name that George Lucas did when he filmed Return of the Jedi?

I don't understand how GW expects this game to have mast appeal. Their entire idea of seacret releases really has me abaffled. If I could get some pics I might be aboard for it but as of now my interest is cut adrift.

Who knows though, this might be the berth of a new wave of limited one-of games. I bow to GWs superior marketing skills.

GW seems to be equating 'lack of previous knowledge" to "awesome pre-order sales".

I'm not exactly sure why they believe this though...

Actually, generally speaking selling out of something (or not) is an indicator of how well something sold. If you order X number of copies of something and sell all of them in a couple months that's an objectively better sales record than being stuck with n, n squared or n cubed or so of them months later. It also avoids other costs of having to pay to store that inventory (and possibly pay taxes and other costs associated with storing it) for months or years down the road.

People were excited about Space Hulk. People who already had the older edition bought it again. New people bought just because they had never tried this old fabled game, they just knew it was awesome.

This new game benefits from neither of those, it has to sell entirely off its own back.

It if flops, then the next thing GW will say that specialist games of any sort are a total waste of time and write off any hope of future releases. They won't stop to think about their own hopeless strategy. I seriously don't know why they didn't do Warhammer Quest, that would have been money in the bag.

Then again, it might be a massive success.

Space Hulk also had a bunch of unique and awesome models for 40k and was actually cheaper than buying the same amount of generic Termies and 'Stealers! Another benefit the new game lacks.
