I don't care for fantasy at all but this sounds like a fun game that's all included in the box. I'm definitely looking forward to checking it out and will get it if it proves to be worth it.

What's most disappointing is that this game will most likely sink like a stone after the first few months, and Games Workshop will see that as a reason to abandon boxed games and focus exclusively on their core lines for another decade.
Really, when they could have relaunched a proven seller like Battlefleet Gothic or Necromunda (or even Warhammer Quest, loathe it as I do), why this? Just why?

...What?
Space Hulk was arguably a resounding success. But that didn't cause them to "abandon boxed games and focus exclusively on their core lines for another decade".
It wasn't intended to be a permanent addition to the line-up. It was limited production, with hints from "insiders" being that the cardboard tiles were the big factor screwing it up.
Will this be the same? Maybe.
I'm kind of hoping it actually becomes its own game, and that the Captains receive their own models in WHFB scale.

I think it sounds kind of neat. I never played Man O'War, so I have very little experience with this kind of thing.
My interest largely depends on the cost. If it's more then like $60 I'll likely pass. I was willing to pay more for Space Hulk because I had played it before and already knew I liked it.

I doubt it'll be much cheaper than Space Hulk, I reckon it'll be bang on the same.
I'm sort of half-excited about this. I was kind of hoping for some blast from the past, nostalgia-fuel, so this being something of a mutant Man O'War doesn't really hit that spot. That being said, I like naval games, and love BFG. Not sure if I want to pick up another rule-set, as I've been learning a lot lately, but I could always use Spartan rules.
Really, it's all going to come down to the models for me. It always just comes down to the models.

I'm excited to find out more.
I've danced around Uncharted Seas since it was released, but was hoping GW would revisted MoW in some capacity as I'd rather play in the WHFB universe.
Plus I play High Elves, and my friend plays Orcs so this sounds perfect.

I am in the bemused, but not hating the idea crowd.
If this is an all in one limited release game, I don't quite get why you'd do four fleets. I'd have gone for two fleets with lots of different ships for variety.
The scale is odd too. Surely, it's better to make the boats smaller, so that again you have more minis in the box. At this scale we're talking 3 ships per fleet, maximum?
I will wait and see. I'm guessing the models will look pretty spectacular (at least they'd better do as that's the only way it's going to sell) but I want to see how the game works and whether this really is a one off "Hee Hee, aren't we crazy?" release.

I agree, of course its gonna sink if its "Once it sells out, thats it. No more boxes"
It'll just take a while for it to sell out (it'll probably take longer than space hulk which I still saw boxes for 2-4 months)

Makes for another element to play in a campaign so I like it. Just bit of a shame that only 4 armies are getting the love. Personally would like the see Dark Elves and not Orcs.

Personally, I really like that they are experimenting and putting something new out. Rogue trader became 40k right? Maybe if Dread Fleet is a hit they use the rules to launch a new Man-o-war.

Beyond the "Hey, these big monsters/tanks are selling well, let's do more of those!" approach, GW appear to lack the ability to develop a business strategy in the way you propose

Got to say, a naval game has my interest, even though Fantasy itself doesn't interest me, and both Uncharted Seas and Dystopian Wars (which I'd not heard of before this thread) use decks of cards, which is one of my least favorite game mechanics (in games that aren't card games), so this has an advantage over them in that respect.

I get the impression if this is a success Dark Elves and possibly Chaos will likely be the expansion armies. Possible WD rules.
Well I have done well guessing the intentions of GW so far so may as well continue with that. Automatically Appended Next Post: crisps not chips wrote:Jeff Cope wrote:

Game Cards are optional in those games, you don't need to use them. Models come with data-cards when you buy them, but this is just for ease of reference - they're not used in gameplay. Automatically Appended Next Post: ceorron wrote:crisps not chips wrote:Jeff Cope wrote:

What do they do, if I might ask? Their website claims a fog of war effect, are they just weather conditions and the like? A weather deck I could get behind, I think, I'm just cringing at some of the possibilities (Hah! Patriotic Zeal! My admiral signals England Expects That Every Man Will Do His Duty and I gain a +3 on all rolls!).

Unfortunately they're the kind that you don't like. By fog of war I think they just mean 'you don't know what your opponents going to pull.' The game stands up well without them though, so if you don't like that random card based element you can play the game without them and still have good fun. I've only played Dystopian Wars, but it's a good game, and I recommend it if you fancy a bit of naval combat.

Id count on same or more $$ for this than SH. It sounds like it will have a larger miniature content, therefor driving cost up. Im guessing $90-$100.
The more I think about it, and the releases from other companies coming up, Im probably out of this one. GW will have to really shine to get me in, and thats unlikely.
Im thinking my money is going to Mantics Warpath...
