It's not even the expansion thing that bugs me, it's purely the price and the fact that it's a limited release. Being limited encourages impulse buys, but the sticker price discourages it.

Except GW said, in one of their many WNT's devoted to pimping Dreadfleet, that the mat was "crease/crinkle free" I believe, so this is blatantly false advertising and I'd be a little pissed if I were him. I wouldn't spend $115 on a game, advertised as coming with a "high-quality printed mat" to play on (and what has been reasoned to be part of the reason for the inflated cost to begin with), and then accept utter crap that's ugly and creased when they said it wasn't going to be.
EDIT: I believe that was right here actually: http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/blogPost.jsp?aId=18300007a
And then you've got the seascape. For the first time ever at Games Workshop, we've released a sea in a box. The 5' x 3.5' gaming mat depicts the infested waters of the Galleon's Graveyard and on closer inspection you can make out Undead sea monsters and ghostly faces lurking in the depths. It's also completely uncreasable (which isn't a real word, but then neither is uncrumplable), no matter how much you screw it up, your ships will always sail smoothly across it. It's almost certainly Elven technology.
Didn't know the elves were incompetent liars, but then again there's a lot of things I don't know.
But that's just me, other people are far more tolerant of bs it would seem. I'm just saying $115 is a lot of money.
Ah didn't know about their claims that it was crinkle free. Yeah, that is not living up to the standards promised. It was obviously made by High Elves, they spend too much time singing and dancing around without focusing on what they're meant to be doing. Or maybe Dark Elves got to his box first and crinkled it with Dark Magic to turn everyone against the High Elves and as revenge for getting left out...
Anyway, if he feels that it is not up to the standard that was advertised then he should be able to take it back and get one made by competent elves.

Yeah the price is way too much since there are tons of board games out there with more stuff in the box and just as good rules (if not better but that's subjective) for much less and frankly GW hasn't been in the board game business for two decades so they don't have the clout to act like their products in that market are "premium." The limited release also feels like I'm being bullied into paying their price or I will never get a copy.
Expansions aren't a huge deal but when you are paying that much for a game with missions, when you run out of them the replay value is kind of shot. Fantasy Flight recently released Mansions of Madness which is a heavily mission based game, but have already put out two mini packs with new missions and have a real expansion in the works. With Dread Fleet they probably won't even throw new stuff in White Dwarf if Space Hulk is any indication so there's not a huge amount of long term value and when something is $115 I expect something more.

yeah,
Got my copy in the post today. Very happy with the models.
Again I got a creased mat. not a big deal though and with play I think it will flatten out.
I think that the creases (minor as they are) are probably because of all the sprue crammed into the box on top of the mat.
Once the ships are made there will be plenty of room in the box for the mat to relax.
The mat is beautiful.
Also of note and to help balance out the negative customer service.
I ordered the 4 Dark Eldar court of the Archon finecast models. The Medusae had a major miscast on one of the two heads variants.
I decided to call GW as the miscast head was the head I planned on using (the open visor) ... within 2mins they told me a new one was in the post.
I was expecting to be asked to send the old one back before they sent the new one, but they never mentioned it, I guess they are happy to let you keep miscasts for your bitsbox.
although in this case the model is still perfectly useable with the other head. Win!
Panic...

I was very happy with my purchase. the mat had a crease in it from where it had been folded, but after the first game was crease free. Put some play time into the mat or lay it out flat and you may be lucky enough for it to smooth out. All and all I give the overall box an A.

My mat, if it had any creases in it to begin with (I didn't notice) was crease free after laying on my table.
As to the "other games come with as much stuff." Sure, you're right. But none of the Big Box games pricepointed at $100 have minis of even remotely the same quality, save for perhaps Dust Tactics (and even then, I'd argue the Dreadfleet miniatures are at least 2 steps above those).
Gears of War is priced at 80 and contains minis. They're nice, but the detail isn't remotely close to Dreadfleet. Now, when Super Dungeon Explore finally releases (whenever that will be, hopefully before Christmas) you'll have a really good comparision. SDE will come with more minis of equal quality and for $25 less. It will also be expandable, so for all of you clamouring for an expandable game, there ya go. As it stands, I still believe the contents of Dreadfleet fully justify my purchase.
Allow me to paraphrase Anton Ego:
"After reading a lot of overheated puffery about [the misgivings of Dreadfleet], you know what I'm craving? A little perspective. That's it. I'd like some fresh, clear, well seasoned perspective."

Its funny how many are dreading the however humerous possibility of a GW iron. Hope GW doen't force them to buy GW soap and GW deoderant as well. Then where would you be? Despite some of the Dreadgrinchs that populate Dakka I am stoked to say that my copy is sitting with neighbours awaiting my return from work. After a particularly poop day at work this shall be a pleasant end to it creases or not. My only fear is the Mrs catching me using the iron and assume that I might have given up mooching off to the spare room with models ( ) and found a new more helpful side.

I have my copy. I have played the first 6 scenarios and I am enjoying it. The ships are incredible and the terrain is great. You can't truly grasp the scale until you get your hands on the ships. They are huge. The heldenhammer is 3.5" long and 4.5" high. The reaver is 4.5" long and 3.5" high. The sea uncreases as you use it, even though it comes creased from being packed. Pleased with my purchase and hope to have it all painted in a couple weeks.

Agreed. For £70 I have more plastic then I would get buying normal plastic kits (40 imperial guard infantry or this, do the maths). The game is fun and it's a new experience painting up ships instead of Tanks and infantry.

Theoretically, one could be said to do better than the other based on time it takes to sell out. Unsold product costs money to store, is susceptible to pre-sale losses (water damage, mosue chews up a box, someone drops a load of old metal dreadnoughts (why are those even still in the warehouse???) crushing a box, etc.)...
On the other hand, did GW have to replace the sand timers in Space Hulk? if so, that'd be a definite cost issue. I seem to remember a lot of stories of the timers being broken.

This is a good point. If the box was only half full of sprue it would contain about the same as a Baneblade box IMO.
Got mine last night and have to say I'm impressed with it and how much is crammed in there. The box is the same size as Spulk but has about another inch in depth.
Models look nice although I have yet to get any off of the sprue. The rulebook is very smart, some of the fluff is waaaay over the top but in keeping with the game.
All in all, £70 well spent.

I can't understand the reasoning behind complaining about the price due to the game not being expandable. Surely it then follows that these people would be happy to pay the price if they new they would have to spend more on extra stuff to play the game...

Rave on, mate. Same for me. I already have never ending expanding model collections for their other miniatures games, the appeal to me for Dreadfleet was that it was a stand alone game with nothing more to buy or store.

Got my copy in the post yesterday. Was wondering whether to keep it sealed to sell later, but cracked and opened up. Best quality plastics I've seen. My wife reckons it's the only GW game she'd try and play.
And I can't leave these ships unpainted. Amazing painter friend is going to do the Heldenhammer and the like, whilst I work on the islands and the dwarf/chaos dwarf ships.
I completely agree with the points about the complete game. I wouldn't have bought it otherwise. It allows an even playing field, and no pondering about list design.
Only one snag for me. Unfortunately, the box got squashed in transit, with a big dent and split in one corner. So I rang GW.
"Oh, sorry about that. We'll send a new box out to you."
(Wow, I think. GW customer service is back to its old form.)
"Do I need to drop the old game at a store?"
(Say no, say no, say no)
"Ah, no. We'll send you a new box. Just a box."
Oh well. Strictly speaking, they've done what they need to do...

I still haven't received mine. Couldn't order it at my GWS because our region had only french boxes allotted and I wanted an english one.
I was told to order it through the website and deliver it at the store, which I did (i made sure to check with support it was an english box, besides the language selection on the website [belgium in english in this case] nothing on the order page specified the language on the box).
Well release day came and it didn't arrive. It wasn't there the next tuesday either, the store owner assumes it's because of Dreadfleet being a special delivery. Hopefully it'll be here before the weekend, I want to get some battles going on sunday with my friends. At least my english 40k rulebook and WD came in on tuesday, stuff to read while waiting

I had been prevaricating over getting this - I have too much unpainted plastic in my cupboard - but I succumbed at the last minute. I was lucky to get one; they've already sold out. I am still trying to decide whether to keep it sealed up, but after reading the posts from people who've bought it, and looking at the coverage in WD, I think I'll open it on the weekend.
I'm more of a WH40k player, but looking at the background to the game, it struck me that this is the kind of thing that GW does best. Their OTT approach to fluff seems to work better in a fantasy setting, and you get the feeling they're a bit relieved to be working outside the confines of the usual game background. Also, I enjoyed the Pirates of the Carribean movies (which are clearly part of the inspiration for this game), so it'll be an excuse for Jack Sparrow impersonations ('But why is the rum gone?').

I was interested in it before, but couldn't reconcile the price with our budget.... so being the nice guy i am i tried to forget about it. We hit the game store today, and the first words i heard were 'honey, look at this pirate ship game! You like pirate stuff, right..? '
I'm looking forward to uncrating it, thouh she has laid claim on most of the ships for painting purposes...

Well anyway, I'd be posting a lot less massive hyperbole if GW didn't massively over-exaggerate every single thing they release. Well, not every single thing actually, since I don't think they claimed liquid green stuff could cure cancer, but I didn't buy the White Dwarf so I wouldn't know really.
Seriously though, I know it's probably just from how it's packed and it'll probably smooth out in time, but come on, they even had to be all stupid and cutesy about it by saying it was High Elven magic that caused it to be so crease-proof, so of course I'm going to burst out of my chair and point at the screen while screaming "A-HA! YOU LYING BASTARDS!"
I totally did that IRL.

lol, okay that's awesome. I can just feel the excitement build up and then get instantly crushed as I read this. "A new box?! Oh...just the box..."
That is cool though, since they easily could have just said "No, it's just the box, why does it matter?", but they're actually gonna go through the trouble of shipping a new empty box to you because the old one is damaged. It's a limited edition empty box though, so anything less would have been unacceptable, really.

I think the point is that, like others on this forum, you've been around long enough to know that that's the way marketing works; we live with it every day and you always take it with a grain of salt. Just as Finecast was never going to be the revolution in miniature wargaming that GW claimed it would be, and PP's 'plastic' isn't really plastic but resin. It's just not worth getting all bitter and twisted about it.
Anyone who's reached the stage of screaming at their computer screen about this kind of thing should watch this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDYjljdje-g

How big are the bases of the ships (trying to determine how big they are) are they Cavalry sized 25mm by 50mm or more chariot sized 100mm by 50mm?
The sprues on the website aren't really scaled next to anything? Anyone know?
HAs anyone actually played the game enough to describe its gameplay - is it fun? That's all I really want to know - is the game fun, will I play it.

Chariot sized at least. They are way bigger than the cavalry bases (except the dinky little support ships like the dwarf derigible.
I've not completely uncrated the box yet, but they look to be fairly sizable.
