It states that mine will be here on October 5th.

Right smack dab in the middle of my Fall Break for college. Nice.

Thanks, Lord Blackfang - the models look promising. Honestly, who cares if the Dark Elves (or Orcs) were left out? Clearly they wanted each vessel to be distinctive, so they picked a range of themes and went for it. It amazes me that so many people take the quality of the models for granted, when in fact noone else is producing plastic fantasy models like this. It'd be good to have some indication from people who actually got the game whether it plays well.

Incidentally, our local GW store (independent, but with close links) can't get enough stock to satisfy the pre-orders. And the total of 65,000 produced worldwide was also mentioned.

More than happy with my copy

The models are excellent and the sea scape mat is probably the nicest printed mat I've ever seen... It will be used for Dread Fleet and Forbidden Seas

Been reading the rules.

I don't know if GW nicked this from some other naval game, but their wind mechanic is the most elegant I've ever seen. Instead of having a compass like usual, there is a wind marker on the edge of the game mat representing the direction the wind is blowing from. The marker moves along the edge randomly as the wind shifts. Ships gain a bonus or penalty to their movement depending on which fire arc the marker is in.

Awesome . They look even better in-person!

So, I went by the store today.

The Good:
-Ships, Mat, Rulebook all look awesome
-The liquid greenstuff is also awesome

The Bad:
-My copy is set to arrive Monday, so I can't get it until the store is open again Wednesday (closed Mon-Tues). Due to corporate policies, they can't give me one off the shelf (the manager got in trouble for it before). Ah, corporate... at least the manager at my store can agree they don't know what the heck they're doing

For those who were wondering about picking up the White Dwarf, YES it is worth it. There's a whole page devoted to how each ship is painted. Well worth it if you got Dreadfleet.

So White Dwarf is actually worth buying?

I think you said the 5th, right? Maybe we'll tie

Yeah, the WD is really, really chock full of dreadfleet stuff... I think it's well worth it. I bought the ogre one last month, which I think would have been very "optional" even if I'd been starting ogres... this one has more real useful content for dreadfleet owners.

I had the exact same problem with Space Hulk. My pre-ordered copy didn't arrive on the day of release, but there were piles of the things just sitting there in the shop. Was I allowed to take one of the spares in place of mine to compensate for their foul up? Was I

It beggars belief that your pre-ordered a copy (which IIRC RiTides, you did at the very first opportunity) and it doesn't arrive at the same time as the store copies, yet you're not allowed to take one which will sit on the shelf doing nothing in the period it takes for yours to arrive. GW customer service is usually pretty good, but in these instances, it is monumentally crap.

Minor note:
This is not "customer service". This is "corporate policy".

The same thing happens with video game preorders, most recently with Gears of War 3 and Best Buy's midnight release.
They let people who did not preorder go in first, and when they sold out of the "shelf stock" people started trying to buy the preordered copies, but were turned away. The preorder copies are considered to be "additional" to the actual stock which a store is allocated.

So... I played a game of Dreadfleet today. Tutorials are for n00bs, so we jumped right in with a straight-up pitched battle using all the ships.

We found the gameplay to be excellent and the rules surprisingly clear (for a change). The play was very fast-paced but it still took quite a while.

We did unfortunately observe that the damage system would not work in a larger wargame (10 ships is pushing it, IMHO, and we almost ended up in a situation where all the damage cards are in play but spread out so that none of the ships are destroyed).

Also I think I got a crease in my mat.

Still, I am very happy with how the game plays and with the component quality and I'm very satisfied with my purchase (admittedly I got it for a mere €75 )

It certainly wasn't sold out in GW stores, as they got their second wave of websales by recalling excess stock that was still sitting on shelves after a week or so.

Why wouldn't you cancel your pre-order on the spot, demanding an immediate refund? (If you paid upfront, or a deposit.) Then you can choose to purchase one off the shelf (or not).

You're right Flashman, I did, and it's definitely a little off-putting! I've never been enamored with GW's corporate policies, though, that end up being reflected in store... scipio, the reason I wouldn't cancel is I don't want to be a pain to the manager at the store who I really like (and occasionally play at, and try to support) who also allowed me to trade in some unopened boxes I got from him towards the Dreadfleet purchase.

But yeah, that will probably be my last preorder!

Totally agree. The other option is to just buy a shelf copy on the spot (using CC), go home and open it. Save the receipt. Then when your preorder comes in, buy it, take it out to your car for 5 minutes, then come back into store with it and return it as your "shelf copy" with the original receipt from your frist purchase.

If the argue, just say you will instead do a charge-back on your credit card. Stores hate that.

Policies like this are absurd and deserve absurd responses.

Saw it in store yesterday and very impressed Teh ships are lovely, the mat is very nice (although need to be careful when moving so as not to ruck up the ocean! The islands are great as well - very skully but thats to be expected.

Mine is off to a friend being painted so won't get it for a bit but hopefully get some games in in the next few weeks at our local club. Looking forward to seeing how my uncrated seas ships look with the Dread fleet ones

Well done GW! I knew you wouldn't manage it.

You should probably read the Release Date Info on the GW site then as it doesn't promise anything of the sort:

GW Site wrote:This Product launches on the 1st October.

Hobby Centre Delivery
Place your order by Sunday 25th September, choose to have it delivered to your local Games Workshop Hobby Centre and we guarantee that it will be there for pick up on launch day.

All Other Deliveries
Choose to have your order delivered to an address of your choice and place it by Wednesday 28th September and we will ship it out on Friday 30th September.
Orders placed after the 28th September will ship out first thing on Monday 3rd October.

So the earliest anyone should get it is tomorrow.

I never said they promised, and yes if you click a box that is strangely hidden you can see that they aren't organised enough to manage posting it in time. Any other product you advance order will come on released but GW aren't capable of doing that and I find it frustrating.

I'll forget all about it when i open the box though I'm sure.

I'm interested to know how easy this would be for someone to play that had never played a tabletop battle game before.

At it's most basic level (i.e. a couple of ships each) would this be fun for someone like that?

My sister said she'd play a few games you see.

I note for those that object to a £70 price tag that Wayland have just advertised a second batch of copies for sale for £63.

Tracking says mine arives today so I guess I will just hang on to that since it would probably cost me the £7 to drive the Wayland and back.

@ Lord_blackfang - re the rules and gameplay, this is good news indeed. Thanks for the heads up.

Fun fact:
It seems that all stores were advised by GW to not open boxes before release, so noone could read the rules or assemble and paint the models for demo games.
Minimum wage staff were advised to buy a copy and lend it to the store for demo games.

Except GW said, in one of their many WNT's devoted to pimping Dreadfleet, that the mat was "crease/crinkle free" I believe, so this is blatantly false advertising and I'd be a little pissed if I were him. I wouldn't spend $115 on a game, advertised as coming with a "high-quality printed mat" to play on (and what has been reasoned to be part of the reason for the inflated cost to begin with), and then accept utter crap that's ugly and creased when they said it wasn't going to be.

EDIT: I believe that was right here actually: http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/blogPost.jsp?aId=18300007a

And then you've got the seascape. For the first time ever at Games Workshop, we've released a sea in a box. The 5' x 3.5' gaming mat depicts the infested waters of the Galleon's Graveyard and on closer inspection you can make out Undead sea monsters and ghostly faces lurking in the depths. It's also completely uncreasable (which isn't a real word, but then neither is uncrumplable), no matter how much you screw it up, your ships will always sail smoothly across it. It's almost certainly Elven technology.

Didn't know the elves were incompetent liars, but then again there's a lot of things I don't know.

But that's just me, other people are far more tolerant of bs it would seem. I'm just saying $115 is a lot of money.

My local GW was using parts of two of its employee's copies for their demo table so that sounds likely.

The game seems ok, but for a board game it's incredibly overpriced at $115 (especially since they will never be an expansion for it) so I'll have to pass.
