Oh, dear. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you - stage 1 of the Internet's retaliation - the hacking of an anti-net-neutrality MP's website. No doubt there'll be more to come... but for now enjoy this wonderful insight into how technically inept our legislators are.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-23437473

...on Tuesday it was reported by Staines's blog that the MP's site had been breached and defaced with pornographic images.
The MP tweeted: "That well known responsible campaigner @guidofawkes has been hosting a link that distributed porn via my website."

The blogger responded to say the site did not link to the images in its story - but instead showed a screen-grab of a non-pornographic segment of the hacked page.
"Confused by technology again @claire4devizes?" Staines said.
"We deliberately didn't link to your filthy website - we just took a SFW [safe for work] screenshot."

that'll be a fun case then.

I'll just leave this alone, because for some reason you are way too wrapped up in hostility about the subject, twisting what I say on some points, ignoring other things I say, and angry because I teach my kids that porn is not a good thing and why I think it is. By all means, indulge yourself in watching the stuff, I'm not trying to prevent you and stand beside you against any net censorship.

There ya go, done.

No, not wrapped up in hostility or twisting or ignoring anything. I'm not angry at you for teaching your kids that you don't like porn. Teach them that, and the reasons why you hold that opinion. I'm angry about how you are blaming lack of web safety on others, and insulting others legitimate and legal choices.

You are welcome to your opinions, but please, if you want to keep your kids safe educate yourself on Internet safety.

That will keep you safe and give you full control of what happens on your computers much better than most other ways and its free.

I'd love to believe it, but I'm loath to jump on the "OMFG IS AWFUL!" bandwagon without knowing more about the source other than claims to have had 'brief conversations' with ISPs.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

The part that irritates me is that there is no parliamentary vote or debate for the public to try and sway via protest, it's Cameron talking to the ISPs and them introducing this stuff voluntarily, with the threat of legislation if they refuse.

They've introduced it in a way that makes public influence virtually impossible, as the only way to stop this is with your wallet by switching to a broadband provider that doesn't block porn, which is none of them, or by convincing the government to introduce a bill to prevent this sort of thing happening, which is even more unlikely.

That is quite a troubling situaiton if it is true: the government is effectively taking an end-run around your rights. However, without the appropriate legislation to back up that voluntary censorship, I'd think that there is a legal case to be made that the government has infringed on your rights to free speech (even in the UK scope of it).

Caution is certainly a good idea. That said, I think the case for this whole half-baked plan being the biggest pile of bullgak since I don't know when is already fairly solid even without the arguments made in the second article.

Okay there, Helen Lovejoy.
One: It''s the principle. What is needed is not a blanket attempt at censorship - especially as this would affect more than just spank material, as detailed by the above article, but will actually censor a tonne of things, some of which are incredibly poorly defined - but more parents who actually educate their kids properly on internet safety and supervise them when they use it. Big Dave and the State are not there to do the parent's jobs for them, nor are they there to make this kind of decision without consulting the public on the matter, which seems to be what's going on.
Two: The "protecting children" argument is the biggest crock of gak ever. It's trotted out every time the government tries to put out a thing that "there's always a way around of," and it's always a barefaced lie or a half-baked, barely thought through idea that'll just end up backfiring badly.

Hey, welcome to 'the internet isn't actually public space'. Everything you do online and everywhere you go is owned by someone else, despite what Berners-Lee may or may not have intended. The idea that this is a freedom issue is childish nonsense. ISPs have a responsibility to society. They should be fulfilling it, for precisely the same reasons that adverts for dildos shouldn't appear in between cartoons on TV.

While I agree that ISPs can do what they want, the way that the government is trying to push this one past the radar is what makes it an issue for me.

In North America, you can already find commercials for dildos in between cartoons. I think Trojan has been launching a campaign that includes commercials during Family Guy and American Dad
