UK to Block All Pornography From the Internet Unless Users Ask For It
UK Prime Minister David Cameron will announce extensive restrictions on internet pornography tomorrow, according to the Daily Mail (which is taking full credit for these reforms).
The new measures will make it so that every household connected to the internet will have their porn blocked unless they ask to receive it. According to the Daily Mail, Cameron will announce that internet pornography is "corroding childhood."
By the end of next year, all homes in the UK will have pornography banned on it unless the users decide that they would like to tell their internet provider (which are oh so careful when it comes to user privacy) that they would like to watch some pornography from time to time. Other new regulations include adult content filters on all new cellular phones, and a ban on pornography through public wi-fi spots. Cameron will also reportedly tell Google that they will have a ‘moral duty’ to do more to stop child abuse images from showing up on searches. Pornography involving stimulated rape will also be banned.
The Daily Mail, which claims it has a copy of Cameron's speech, says that Cameron will say, "I’m not making this speech because I want to moralise or scaremonger, but because I feel profoundly as a politician, and as a father, that the time for action has come. This is, quite simply, about how we protect our children and their innocence."
Of course, the only source so far on this ban is the Daily Mail itself, so tread carefully. The only thing they dislike more than barely legal co-eds is the truth.

Back to scrounging through the back alleys and hedgerows for porn, kiddos! That's how we did it in my day!
We were once so close to heaven, St. Peter came out and gave us medals; declaring us "The nicest of the damned".

Something tells me that teenagers overseas will find some way around this new restriction, and it'll just make them want more of it. That's what happened when the US banned alcohol in the '20s.

Sigh. I guess nobody bothers to read beyond the title and see that all you have to do to get around the "ban" is to tell your ISP to turn the filter off? It's a stupid idea, but we don't need to make stuff up to criticize it.
There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.
Correct me if im wrong but wouldnt typing the url of a pornagraphic website into your browser be tantamount to telling your isp you want to view porn? ;P

Apparently it's already illegal to make 'violent' porn, but Cameron wants it illegal to own. Of course, there's some disagreement in what 'violent' means in this regard, as some consenting BDSM material was caught up in it.
This just seems another 'tough on crime' stance to get some newspaper covers and draw attention away from the fact that they're doing a piss poor job of running the country.
Pornography involving stimulated rape will also be banned
Stimulated rape?
Also: I wonder who gets to determine what is and is not pornography in England.
That's what I was wondering. I'll say first that I despise porn because of the marraiges I have seen break up over it, the degradation of the people involved, and the fact there are people that get forced into doing it. I also hate the fact that some of the sites are like land mines in that they can inadvertantly be accessed. A good example is the time I was helping my 10 year old daughter with her homework and we typed in an address from a map book she had. It had apparently been picked up by some porn producers because some pretty vile stuff appeared.
I was fairly pissed, to say the least, and if this is what is prevented, I'm all for it as a family man who doesn't want his kids subjected to that filth.
However, all that being said, is the baby being thrown out with the bath water here?
I will admit I have a good size porn collection for my spank bank when I deploy. I will though admit what I go after the most is the Porn Bloopers. Those are freaking comedy gold.

I imagine one sees more than a few "bloopers" when one watches porn.

But how exactly is this "ban" going to do anything? You already have the ability to install internet filters that do the exact same thing on your own computer.

That was the reason for my final question, though. I have tried those filters and it seems they have a very loose definition of what porn is.

Man, that is pretty much the iconic sentence for justifying some new nanny state law, isn't it? "I'm not moralising or scaremongering, but because of the innocence of children I'm going to ban something."

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”
Adam Smith, who must have been some kind of leftie or something.
Restricting access to internet content is almost impossible. Various UK ISPs already try to block Piratebay and various other sites yet it is laughably easy to cuircumvent their blocks.
There are also some very real civil liberties issues here. Just who is going to judge what is and isn't 'violent' porn?
I was expecting this to be honest, after all the tories love to pander to the middle english.
