On the subject of "just ask your provider", a LOT of adults are still living with parents here in the UK both because of the terrible job market, university fees being astronomically high, and house prices soaring far beyond what first-time buyers and even groups of friends can afford, both in rent and actual cost. Imagine having to walk up to your parents and ask them to get the filter turned off so you can whack one out.
Ohhhh the horror!!!!
Bottom line..... live under my roof follow my rules.

Congratulations on completely missing the point. I'd give you a gold star but I'm afraid I'm all out.
Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Don't bother, GG is a Christian Fundamentalist, stuff like freedom of speech are concepts that are completely alien to him because they weren't written on a tablet by his invisible friend a couple of thousand of years ago.

I don't see how this is the end of the world. They aren't banning porn, they are blocking it by default unless customers specifically request access, in order to safeguard children from accessing it.
Now there is of course the VERY legitimate argument that censorship should be in the hands of parent, not the government.
And yes, ISP's have a terrible history when it comes to customer privacy.
At the end of the day, this isn't a big deal to me.
Now what I would prefer is a home network that blocked such content by default and allowed specific devices to be unlocked. So my own PC would be unlocked, but the PS3 and kids computers would be locked. That is how the UK should be doing it, but instead they are going balls out.
Heaven forbid parents actually be on top of what their kids are doing at any given moment, that might require effort.

The trouble with this is that the ‘default’ internet is the censored state approved internet. That a sanitised version may become the norm and not the exception represents a sinister precedent.
I remain to be convinced that these filters are even possible from a technical perspective. If it was possible to offer a ‘porn free’ internet I suspect that ISP’s would have rolled this out as a optional extra (in return for a fee) ages ago. They haven’t because they know that the internet doesn’t work that way.
But even if it was possible I firmly believe that it must be censored version that requires you to tick the box.
I think the job of policing the internet should be left for parents. The only justification for state intervention is in the case where the production of the material breaks the law. So child abuse pictures are a no brainer as the act of child abuse is illegal. Sex between consenting adults is legal so the state can butt out when it comes to footage of consenting adults having sex.

Oh yay! Lets treat adults forced to live with there parents many years after they would like to be independent like children!
Great way to make your children resent you "Your stuck hear thanks to lack of housing, jobs and cost of university, all things caused by our generation, but you had better remember I'm an adult and your not, even though your in your 20's."

Or with our brand new Home Monitoring System you can use the networked cameras in your home to verify with a government employee directly that you are over the age of 18!
This is great news!
"So, do please come along when we're promoting something new and need photos for the facebook page or to send to our regional manager, do please engage in our gaming when we're pushing something specific hard and need to get the little kiddies drifting past to want to come in an see what all the fuss is about. But otherwise, stay the feth out, you smelly, antisocial bastards, because we're scared you are going to say something that goes against our mantra of absolute devotion to the corporate motherland and we actually perceive any of you who've been gaming more than a year to be a hostile entity as you've been exposed to the internet and 'dangerous ideas'. Thats not difficult to do, but most parants can't be botherd to do it, or pay someone to do it, and would rather we hand over more freedom to the government rather than work out how to do some simple filters.

I agree, that the censored version shouldn't be the default, but rather a requested service. I also agree that as much as people might want to ban something online, you can't stop the signal.
In order to ban porn, you'd have to ban ANY website that COULD be used to include it. They've tried to ban ThePirateBay in the UK for years now, and yet tons of proxy pages abound. The internet is, and likely always will be, smarter than any government office, the NSA included.

How about, instead of banning porn across the UK, parents take responsibility for their children?

Much like this new law.
If they do pass it then there will be a horde of furious teenagers arriving at 10 Downing Street to lynch David Cameron. And I shall be one of them.

Well it is pretty bad for people who are single or married.
I think they need to define what they are going after other than "Child Porn", which, funnily enough, is illegal anyway. I thought the Government has monitoring measures for sites that supply that kind of material? Hence why you get entire Paedo rings locked up.
I'm just completely bemused by this as it has come out of nowhere and seems to be getting passed without the bat of an eye from any political opponenet. Then again it's hard to argue censorship when it's linked to preventing child porn.
From what I have seen the "request" will essentially be a popup when you either register as a new user (ie are first connected), or a popup that appears for existing users when (or rather if) this comes into force asking you "do you want to have access to XYZ", rather than it being automatically blocked and you having to actively going to the ISP and requesting access.
I think most things about how stupid this idea is have already been said so there is not much to add.

Clearly he doesn't understand that it's better to spend buckets of cash not available on something that probably won't work over parents sacrificing time for their kids! What do you do with such countrymen?
