Space Marines seem to dominate 40k. 5 codex's!!!! They seem to take up half of my local gw.

Am i missing something or are games workshop grabbing profit at the expense of a flowing variety of armies?

It's to be expected as this is the flagship army and they are human after all so thier is a natural affinity thier. So not really.

I'd of thought that Imperial Guard represent them better, and surely just because they are popular gw shoudnt milk it!

1/3 of all GW sales is a SM. not 1/3 of 40k sales.

They don't have to dominate the game. I prefer games where the antagonists are Imperial Guard; you actually get to play a game of Warhammer 40k (Morale, Pinning, etc).

QFT.

If not for SM, GW wouldn't exist.

well SM are honestly simple to use, they are really durable and even a brand new player can do some damage if they half way think out a battle. but like the others mentioned, SM are the bread and butter of GW sales. its not milking anything its just smart business

Thats the same thing, they are making compramises to their game so they can dish out more Sm's to the kiddies!

I don't mind Space Marines being front and centre in 40K. I like Space Marines. I like my Space Marine army (or armies, now that I have a separate Deathwatch army as well).

I think they offer a lot of fantastic story potential once you get over the bald yelling sergeant syndrome and the whole 'SPASE MAREINZ HURR!' thing. And, as long as you're not a DA or BA player, they're a great army to play too!!

Smurfs are fething boring, some of the other chapters are a bit more interesting... but I do like kicking power armoured arse with my Orks, and tend to judge marine players, especially smurf players, for having a fairly low level of imagination.

Well, since space marines are in every starter box since ever it reasons they would have the most representation. They are the flagship army in 40k, and are in most ways the most original. There is very little paralell to the fanatical knightly warrior monks of the far future in other game systems. The dominance does screw up the metagame though, which of all issues is my pet peeve. I can't really rail on them too hard though, I just sold my nid army for a space marine force. After tyranids, then orks, then tyranids, I decided it was time for an army that was FUN to paint and didn't have thirty man squads.

Quite aware of what the word means Nurgy, I just thought your comment was strange.

It's really not a shock that Space Marines are so popular. They're the most "mainline" in terms of how people think humans will fight wars in the far future. Add in the best aspects of knightly orders such as heraldry, fellowship, and hand to hand combat and it's pretty much a now brainer that people enjoy playing them.

To answer more personally, I have no problem with it.

I like Space Marines, I like fighting against Space Marines and I like playing as Space Marines.

I've played as nearly all the races and a good bit of the sub 'dexes and fought against even more of them, Space Marines heavily included. I don't have any issue with Space Marines.

I think people who post how much they hate Space Marines need to get over themselves.

You can't fix stupid.

In the Darkness of the Far Future, there are only bad guys.

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil

I wouldn't mind seeing imperial guard take a bigger role. Space Marines are supposed to be super-rare, after all. Then we might even see a Lost and the Damned book, too!
