I just figured since i live on an island.... where i constantly find Crab shells.... why not use them to my advantage.....
there free, already nicely painted, and will most likely make an awesome custom army of Orks.

Yeeeeaaaah, I'm sure people will want to play with you fielding a rather smelly crab carcass. Man that looks sick, but awesome. It's like some ork went down to the river and killed it, and the mechheads went nuts.

Now there's an idea I haven't seen before...

I'm still not quite sure what to think of this. The concept art looks brilliant, I'll give you that. Makes me think of
a bunch of ork spores landing on a water planet, and making the most of those giant crustacians they come
across there. The more I think about it, there's a certain orkish logic in it all. Crab shells are 'armoured' in
every sense of the word, and ones of that size (scales up to what, 4-5 meters across or more?) would have some
serious plating on it. An ork streched for resources, and with a certain amount of ingenuity, would certainly take
advantage of such a find...

Come to think of it, I really likes this idea! Some things come to mind though;

- Boil your shells! And leave them out in the open air for a couple of days, to make certain that any and all smell
bacteria and other organic matter is long gone.
- I know the colouring on the shells is something you fancied, but I'd suggest you paint them. Seems a bit redundant
painting crab colours over natural crab colours, but I think it would look more wargamish if you did.
- Crab shells, contrary to what I said earlier, are prone to cracking. Be sure to have a smart, safe way of transporting
them.

One last thing; if you're going to make this the theme of your army, this has to be the base for your 'pincha-stompa':

Get a hold of one of those shells, and a couple of defiler kits... you're set!

Ignore the Nay-sayers! Great idea. Every time I go to Maryland, I think of making a crab Defiler. My suggestion to you, if you want to keep the natural crabby colors, and avoid some smell, spray lacquar (SP?) the shell. It will add some strength, prevent rotting, and your opponents will thank you. But a great idea! Keep us posted as you go along. You may convince me to make that crab-filer yet!

well weather it works or not I think its a really creative idea. personally i hope you get the damn thing looking and working good. thats just an awesome idea ya got there. i guess you could somehow spray some foam spray or somthing inside it to give it that near un breakable aspect going. seriously keep us updated i wanna see more

One suggestion for a "crab" themed army though...ave some of Da Boyz scratching various places(ahem, ahem) That'll keep the theme going even into the troops!!!

Don't those things rot? I know crab claws do and if there's any meat left inside your models are gonna be pretty smelly.

I just hope for 808's sake his opponents don't field lots of flamers & bring lots of butter!! LOL seriously I think it's a great idea, & am surprised I haven't seen it sooner. Good luck w/it.

the smell only lasts as long as there is meat in the shell.... ive already surpassed that speed bump with a few friends of mines.... (ant colony) they loved it. and i got a few more ideas for this "SEA ORKISH ARMY" living near the ocean makes this extremely easy.... working on more blue prints, will post them soon.

That's a really cool idea. A few years ago, I saw some Tyranid creatures bades on crabs and hummers and stuff, but this could turn out even better.

I'm looking forward to see more of your ideas.
