Subject: What 40k models are "unplayable"

I had a conversation today with a friend who mentioned how many GW "armies" became unplayable. I could only think of one at the time (Squats) and now two more, Genestealer Cults and Lost and the Damned, though these were never fully fleshed out.
Still, this leads to wonder, what models now cannot be used in a game of 40k?
Oh, and "counts as" doesn't cont for this.

Squats are playable, just not a Squats. They make great super tough, slow guardsmen.

Counts as doesn't count, fair enough:
I have zzap gun trukks from my old kult-of-speed army:
Sonic Terminators from the old Chaos codex:
While we're on that topic, Sonic Dreadnoughts too (see icon).
But I guess those were all conversions of things found in codexes, not actual gw models...

there are hundreds if not thousands of past options that are no longer playable. most of these you had to make models for but if you did you are screwed.

That what now?
Space Slann cannot be played any more. I don't think that they ever had a proper army list, mind you.
All Harlequin army.

Orks with imperial weapons. I usually proxy them into games as big shootas or kustom mega blasta, but they're not official. This is a biggie IMHO, most of the rest are sort of small potatoes, but this is almost an entire range.
The original marine dread is a little iffy. I still play with mine, but nobody recognizes it as a GW model, or knows what it's armed with.
Boar Boyz are clean out of the current 'dex.
Runtbotz are useless.
All races robots have been removed.
That's just off the top of my head. I've also got a ton of models that were in the original game that work without any issues. For a 20 year old game they're doing pretty well!

Genestealer Cults got an actual list in the 2nd Ed Tyranid Codex. Lost & The Damned have had two lists, in the 2nd Ed Chaos Codex and in Codex: Eye of Terror. They were certainly fleshed out...

Id say any model that looks like it was thrown into a microwave (IE 99% of rogue trader era models) should be unplayable..
But that's me, I like good looking models

You forgot: Harlie avatar (basically an upgraded troupe master with a sperate model) converted harlie dreadnought Stealer cults were also in RT, I've got the old issue of white dwarf which featured them somewhere around here. Adding to the list: Cypher Human Bombs Cyclone terminators with targeter Old imperial assassins Imperial preacher special characters Most old Guard Special characters Tyranid Special characters Drunken marine Santa Marines riding lizards Genestealer familiars Familiars for Space marine librarians (came out in 4th, killed in 5th) Thrall wizards for 1k sons Iron warriors basilisk

You obviously have a limited knowledge of the RT range, everything sculpted by Jes Goodwin still looks fine as do lots of others. Sure the RT range was patchy, more so than the current range but there were many sweet RT sculpts.

I use my Tinbotz as over the top Cyborks.
As for the rest of the "unusable stuff", I say use 'em however you want if you're fortunate enough to have an open minded gaming group. I'd love to field across from a stealer cult or Squat mech force that are being played as such and not "counts as".
