How good is the extension of the hobby into modelling & printing. It never ends!

Just looking at all those speedy Firstborn makes my heart melt. Always had a big soft spot for the goofy sidecar attack bike! Does it still have rules in 10th or do you run it as counts as something primaris?

Love the terminator/Thor pose on the middle guy, smart use of the dev legs!

It’s pretty cool, but I remember 3d modelling being much easier 20 years ago when I was designing things at uni and fiddling with computer games. I should spend some time learning how to use something like blender but I barely have enough time for painting let alone a whole other hobby! I’ll make do with 3d builder for now
the attack bike does have rules in 10th, but it’s only in legends I believe?

Now that is a cool idea! Wish I’d have thought of that with some more spare legs. It might work well for a captain as it would have to be a pretty big beastie for best effect

Do it! the speeders are pretty cool aren’t they? Wish I could drop responsibilities and just get through them all, but alas, painting minis (and certainly not my own ones) is unlikely to pay the bills

Yep, I’ve got to agree, the blooded are a cool set, and it certainly inspired me to convert a bunch more!

It’s been a slow hobby week this one, mostly as I actually watched good portions of the F1 this weekend rather than occasionally glancing up. I have also been distracted with trying to get my printer behaving better. I think I’ve gotten my head around improving on the auto-levels so I shouldn’t be losing as many prints to detachments. I still find it confusing and frustrating, but as I don’t plan on changing my filament for awhile now that I finally found one I like, I figured it was worth investing the time (and filament) to dialling it in better. Here’s how the auto levelling was leaving a lot to be desired

Painting wise, I have made a little progress on the filler Marines. I outlined all of the shadows with black as the new nun just isn’t dark enough for my liking. I then did the Liberator gold and Leadbelcher highlights on the gold and silvers. Then tonight l brought in the shine with some Stormhost Silver:

Feels like pretty decent progress so far, for quite limited hours of painting time. Hopefully I can get them done before I go on holiday in a few weeks

Thanks for looking

Gah. Leveling issues are a drag. (Get it?) I have yet to encounter (in my admittedly limited experience) an auto-level function that can be trusted. Good luck!

The Marines are moving along nicely, too.

My own experiences with mine have developed into a love-hate relationship. When it doesn't work it's so frustrating (especially being several hours into a print and the base becomes detached, or the filament decides to kink, or the nozzle clogs, or the....).

But when it actually works, it's like pushing the button on the replicator on the Enterprise in the Original Series!

Yep, still not really getting anywhere with it. Lots of the calibration tools seem to not have any effect, the Pressure Advance one looks basically the same and now my levelling is off again

Yeah, they’re a bit frustrating when things go wrong.

True, when it works it’s sweet, but problem solving is a pita with them. Reddit seems to suggest that some people know what all the settings do… I just want to press print and get nice output.

Still plenty more to come! The new set up is working pretty well so far, it’s helped me to keep the right bits with the right marine as intended.

As you can tell from the comments above the printer is a big source of frustration right now. It seemed to be going well, but for no reason at all my bed adhesion went down the pan again after a blob got stuck on the hot end I also discovered there was a bunch of melted/burnt filament stuck behind the rubber cover. Not sure if that was messing with things, but I’m seemingly back to square 1 again. I think I’m pretty much level again now though.

I’ve also been sneaking in the odd 5 minutes here and there (including waiting for calibration prints) on the Panther fillers. I broke with protocol though and painted the green before the purple it seems to have worked well, particularly on the helmet as I can tidy up after myself easier. They’re getting pretty close to being done now

Just more highlights on the black, parchments and bases to get them finished.

Thanks for looking

Ha! Yeah, I seem to have one from virtually no heavy fire power to a full on arsenal!

Made some progress calibrating the printer, then over corrected the z-offset… nearly back in action though.

I also made good progress on the 5 marines, getting the bases done as well as the black and purples on 3 of them. My tired old eyes didn’t want to paint anymore, so I figured I’d glue the most complete ones together instead:

The other pair are nearly at the same level, just needing the final highlight on the black and purple and glueing together to get to the same stage.

I have some family free time this weekend so they should get finished and I can start with my next project.

Thanks for looking

In other news I seem to be having a mid life crisis as I spent even more money on mini guys at the weekend and seem to have acquired this little beauty

It was still in its wrap, so you can imagine how much I paid!

But look at those beautiful minis!

The exploded-view Marines are amusing. The batch is looking very good, though. Big guns go pew-pew.

Now, about that Space Hulk. Awesome! Will you be converting the Marines over to Panthers or will they stay Blangels?

Thanks, the explosion is slowly reversing itself, but they do look pretty funny you’re right. As for the Space Hulk Terminators I’m thinking they stay as Blood Angels, though I do have most of the options available in Panther form
Cap'n Facebeard wrote:Oooh expensive. But it’s a very luxurious edition of the game.

Yeah, it was pretty expensive, but oh so luxurious! Those Terminators are truly gorgeous
muette wrote:Great job on the devastators as usual! And good catch on the Space Hulk box, minis there are awesome.

Thanks muette, looking forward to finishing them and distributing them to their squads. The minis are pretty cool, I’ve been building the Genestealers the last couple of days and whilst cool, there are quite a few draught lines. I’ve fixed a few of them and might try to hide some others with gore and blood effects between claws.

I’ve got the house to myself this weekend so am hoping to get some projects going. I need to decide between extra pillars and gubbins for the Harbinger of Damnation (that are printing off as I type), some more Panthers, something Blackstone Fortressy, something Death Guardy or something else that I’ve forgotten that I’ve primed. What do you guys think I should paint?

Yeah it’s pretty cool, but my gosh was it expensive!

So instead of picking one project I’ve picked two! And my chances of finishing are diminished after I decided I didn’t want to paint much last night. Project 1 is the new fat pillars for the Harbinger of Damnation;

You might even be able to spot why I decided I was too lazy to paint any more! Main progress was priming all of the fat pillars, making sure I had full coverage on the brown (really thinned cheap paint actually had decent coverage. After this pic I then slapped on some cheapo red paint to start the rust effect. Thinning it more than I did with the initial batch worked pretty well. Speaking of which, I credited myself with 100 models painted when I completed the first tranche. Well, I counted up all of the finished pieces and it turns out it was actual 213, which puts me at 279 for the year. This batch will get me to 344 and the Panthers to 349, a stones throw from passing 1 thing painted for each day of a year!

Speaking of which my other project will be the genestealers from Space Hulk. I spent a bit of time in the sunshine getting them ready to prime. I primed them all first thing this morning. Then as I was writing this, realised that I was missing a few. Found those after a mild panic and they’re now drying in the sun. I’ve found a cool scheme that I’m going to try and adjust to the paints I have. That said, I did take a detour by a hobby shop on the way home from dropping Mrs gobert at the airport and got me some streaking grime, so we’ll see how that turns out!

Wish me luck!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
First project complete-ish. The first 4 void panthers of the 5 I was doing are done. Plasma chap is waiting on me breaking out the airbrush shortly.

I like the pillars as a backdrop, looks like they’re in some shipyard building a spaceship … or with all that rust maybe a breakers yard? Here’s the individual shots

I quite like how this dude is looking down, his pose is like he’s looking at the enemy he’s just melta’d

Annoyingly this chap is leaning back slightly and his head is looking up a bit, I guess his target is up high!?

Nothing much interesting about this guy, but the 3d printed nozzle for his grav cannon turned out ok

Multimelta lad is quite casual but he’s ready to spoil a tanks day nonetheless!
Here’s plasm chap so he doesn’t feel left out

Got a few bits to do before I get on with the Genestealers next

So yesterday wasn’t as productive as I had hoped. All I managed was to prime and basecoat the skin on the Genestealers, and even then a few didn’t turn out great. Some were too transparent and others I think over thinned the paint and it settled more like a wash. It seems I still have a lot to learn with the airbrush.

Today however I got on a bit better. A big part of my troubles was tip drying. I found a quick clean with a brush after after every mini and sometimes with a bit of airbrush cleaner kept it at bay. This morning I managed to get a decent paint:flow improver:thinner ratio of 10:3:3 on the pallid wych flesh. I’ll try to think on next time and swap some thinner for flow improver to see if that helps with paint drying on the needle tip.

Another issue I had was a sticky trigger. Not sure what caused it but taking the airbrush completely apart and giving at a good clean. When it went back together the sticking had gone, so I guess there must’ve been something in there somewhere.

Things went well from there with the wych flesh going on pretty well. I then added some orange speed paint to their joints and face. I then went in with some black legion to the carapace. I didn’t have time to do any more as I needed to get my wife and kids from the airport. Here’s where I got to

The colour palette looks a bit coconut crab esque but the finished look should be much more grim dark. Next I’ll add some green/blue, hit the skin with a quick dry brush and or stippling. Then I’ll beaten up the carapace before adding some highlights and possibly a stripe. The teeth and eyes will get some colour before the base gets painted up nice and rusty I’m thinking. Once that’s all done I get to play with some streaking grime! I might need to varnish before I do as I don’t want that speed paint reactivating.

One final observation on the airbrush (sorry, it’s to help me remember when I next get it out). Whilst doing the carapace I noticed I was needing to get in real close to get any sort of coverage and was getting a bit of splatter. I’m wondering if the little battery powered compressor is lacking the guts to do a decent job? Maybe I need to spend some more money on a decent compressor to get the full airbrush benefit. Might need to wait for that after my recent splurge

Thanks! Yeah, I found a cool grim dark scheme on rgb miniatures on YouTube and thought I’d give it a go, mixing in a bit from another channel with a similar look. Here’s some close ups of where they are

This guy was my first try and I got the orange over far too wide an area, but I got better

The Broodlord looks a good representation of what I actually wanted to achieve

And this pose shows all of the areas that I wanted to be orange quite well.

I’m thinking a few patches of green, maybe along the ribbed bits on their arms?
Not decided whether to airbrush or hairy brush those bits.

In Monday I took half an hour to myself to finish off the latest Harbinger of Damnation bits. I was gonna do a poll to see whether to add grey to the pillars, but I decided I much preferred the bare rusty metal look especially on the fat pillars

I then figured that I’d put the whole thing together. I needed to carve a bit from the fat pillars to account for the floor tiles not being perfectly square. Doing so made them much easier to put together and significantly quicker than the original slim pillars. Interestingly once the walls were in place everything was much more stable too, so all round a big improvement!

I just built a random layout to use all of my wall and door pieces, and tried to make a few interesting spots

Even space hulk dwellers need a shower every once in a while… no toilet facilities printed as yet though!

The little forklift is pretty cute, at least my daughter thinks so!

I like how the filament showing through on these pipes look a bit like moss (or maybe something a bit more sinister) growing in the crevices

Like this guys offspring perhaps!?

I’m now en route to my holiday (writing on the plane and posting from Cyprus!) so I’ll not be posting updates for a week or so. Hopefully I can catch up on everyone else’s plogs in the meantime. Happy hobbying everyone

Oh lordy that board has me salivating. So much atmosphere and character! I would be stoked to play on something like that.

I didn't mind the grey cover but the bare rust is just lovely.

Genestealers are looking good with the dark carapace and orange stretchy bits. Green would be a nice accent colour I think, and fits nicely into the alien-esque theme of space hulk.

Have a great time in Cyprus mate, don't forget to eat your bodyweight in lamb and haloumi every day and marinade it all with some ouzo and ocean views!

Thanks! It’s a cool set of stls that paint up pretty well and super quickly if you’re going for the beaten up look! I’m thinking when I eventually get to my Primaris Dark Angels then I might make some bases and a hangar display board for them. There’s a massive 6 or 9 tile door that I reckon I could add a big Dark Angels chapter symbol to!
Glad you’re liking the stealers, I wanted a grim dark aesthetic and for them to look like they’ve not seen much sunlight, hopefully they’ll end up like that. I’ve come across another set of spaceship stls that might become a diorama display for the space hulk gang too… too many ideas!
Whilst I’m coming back heavier than I left the resort we stayed in didn’t have nearly enough Greek/Cypriot options at meal times… aside from the desserts, I ate way too much pudding! snuck in a couple of Gyros too

Thanks Ragsta, I think the fat pillars help the aesthetic and rather pleasingly the board is constructed much quicker than the individual pillars. Should make set up and put away much quicker at the next Kill Team Thursday.
That’s so cool, we adopted a pair of guinea pigs (Ginger and Cookie) from a local charity (Little Wheakers) who rescue them (I think they also do rabbits). Ostensibly they were for the kids but it’s obviously me and Mrs gobert that do the lions share of the looking after. I agree that their work ethic is terrible although I’ve only mowed the lawn 3 times this year so I can’t fault their grass eating! They are also rather cute when eating said grass.

No hobby progress as such but I’m itching to get home and get painting as I’ve been reading the Horus Heresy novel Betrayer by Aaron Demski-Bowden. I’ve really enjoyed it so far and it’s got me wanting to get Argel Tal and some Gal Vorbek, possibly even a Heresy Era Khârn to paint up. Maybe my Legionaries Kill Team should be a Word Bearers and World Eaters alliance? With dead Ultramarines laying about of course!

Looks like the delayed flight is finally departing. See you on the otherside

Hi all, stole 5 mins to try a couple of greens on the stealers. Which do you prefer?

Nihilakh Oxide, or

Terradon Turquoise?

I think I prefer the Nihilakh but am concerned it’ll be totally hidden by the streaking grime. Maybe a Nihilakh heavy mix of the two paints? Any other parts you think I should hit with the colour? All thoughts on the topic are welcome!

It's ironic that the Nihilakh actually looks to be more in keeping with the other colors you've picked out- very natural- but (in my opinion only) may be too subtle to stand out, especially after the addition of other blending colors and grime. I'd vote then for the Terradon Turquoise, which is a good color that is strong enough to emerge even with additional layers or griming.

They're coming along nicely, with a great 'dino' vibe that I've never seen in any other color scheme.

I like the Nihiliakh too, seems more organic - and almost like you could play it up as some bioluminescene. Maybe a thinned down blue wash over the top might help to define the edges/recesses a bit?

Going to dissent here with a vote for Terradon. I like that it is more distinct. That board came out killer, too.
