@Gitsplitta: Thanks muchly.

@GiraffeX: Cheers. It's cool to get back to painting more stuff for this army. One of my favourite projects evar.

@Warboss_Waaazag: Thanks, glad you enjoyed the reports.

Just not quite more MG42s than anybody would ever need. Painted those mostly for a review of The Assault Group's 28mm minis. Now I can turn my regular infantry platoon into Panzergrenadiers if necessary.

Update on those SW fliers:

Also: w00t, weekend. Had a game of Blood bowl last night. Third game of the season for the Orkakringer Schnittaz, this time against Chaos Dwarfs, a 3-0 loss. So thus far we lost 2-0 against humans, 3-0 against Wood Elves and 3-0 against Chaos Dwarves. :|

Orks are just bad now Sigur. I know Blood Bowl rules have nothing to do with 40k seventh... but orks are just bad across the board. Time to pick up a Tau BB team.

Those flyers are amazing! :-) love them Siggy they are brilliant mate. the colour shading is top notch! I have always always been a huge fan of your style of Space Wolves, they are simply inspirational

@Gitsplitta: Thanks for the suggestion, Mr. G.W.Orkshop. The fact that my team's called the way it is is due to German in which WHFB Orcs are also just Orks. :p Because the reference to German stuffs in 40k Ork names is kinda lost in translation.

@nerdfest09: Thank you very much, mate.

Time for dampen the excitement for models relevant to everybody's interest! Here are some 28mm WIP Soviet guns. It's a 45mm anti-tank gun M9137 on M1942 carriage and a 76mm infantry gun M1943.

Don't fret, I'll go back to Space Wolves now.

Hehe actually those Russian anti-tank guns ARE more relevant to my interests than the (wonderfully painted) flying space bricks!

Side question for you: What models do you like for playing Ronin? I have been excited to build up a few forces, but have not found many pleasing samurai models, which is sort of shocking. Any suggestions for lesser known stuff, or are the Perrys and Wargames Factory pretty much it?

@Wehrkind: Thanks very much. I wrote a miniatures overview mini for miniatures for use in Ronin games of scales of 62mm, 42mm, 28mm, 20mm and 15mm. It's far from being complete, but I think it will give you a nice overview of what's out there. My own minis are all by Perry Minis, because they simply are my favourites. It's hard to argue with the Perrys when it comes to historical accuracy and quality. Steel Fist minis make very tempting sculpts though, and I recently finished my first minis by The Assault Group (those MG42 dudes above) and their minis really are extremely pretty, so I assume that their Samurai figures are nice as well. I think they got an especially nice range of Monks. But for most buntai (Bushi, Ikko-Ikki, Monks too really, maybe supplemented with TAG minis, Koreans, Bandits, etc.) I'd go with the Perrys. In the article you'll also find a link to the people who make fitting Ming Chinese. Hope that helps.

edit: Oh, and here's the link. Sorry.

Sweet! I hadn't looked at Zenit stuff in a few years, those are pretty cool. I wonder if you can get them from a stockist in the states. CMoN used to carry their stuff, but I guess they stopped.

Thanks again for the info! I am really excited to get some Ronin on!
Also Of Gods and Heroes on your recommendation. Getting my 7 year WIP sorchimera finished up after all this time to serve as a god

@Wehrkind: Yeah; CMON seem to do mostly kickstarters for stuff their market researchers said would be popular boardgames. Ronin is good fun and somehow I'm really into making terrain for feudal Japanese stuff. Wait, what? I suggested Of Gods and Heroes? :O

SW fliers finished!

Well, as I said before - painting Space Wolves again is pretty cool. Just painting away, knowing what I do and so on. I mean there are silly amounts of stuff on those to paint, I overdetailled the cockpits given you barely see the pilots and all the screens and buttons and so on, but oh well. Better do it properly and it takes a bit longer (pretty much one day in this case really. Grumble, grumble.)

But they look nice, I'm somewhat proud of the results and I hope that they'll look great along with their pals. Hope you like the way they look! C&C welcome as always!

By the way, what should I do next? The Sicaran, Bjorn the Fell-Handed, Logan Grimnar on his wolf sleigh, finish the thunder wolf riders, or some terminators/characters (including Ulrik the Slayer)?

I love the depth of color on those Sigur, and the occasional splashes of bright red really jump out in a wonderful way.

Gods and Mortals: Did you not? I don't really read anyone else, so it must have been you. OWN UP TO IT!

The game doesn't look as good as Ronin certainly, but I am excited to build some stuff, so that's fun.

They look lovely Sigur, I think that finishing the thunder wolf riders would be a good step logicically.

Is Ulrik the old metal one or a conversion?

@Gitsplitta: Thanks muchly. Out of the SW armies I painted so far, this clearly is my favourite colour scheme. Contrast, colour, hazard stripes. And I developed a fondness for battle damage on Space Marines over the years.

@Wehrkind: Pretty sure I haven't, because I've got way enough Fantasy rules sets and due to painting a lot of Fantasy stuff for clients I rarely feel the itch to play Fantasy things myself these days. But let me know what you tzhink of the game once you had a test game or two. And indeed, it's all about doing fun stuffs for it and if it really should happen not to be up your alley you can always use the figures for countless other rules sets.

@nerdfest09: Well, that's good enough. Cheers, mate!

@Solar_lion: Cheers. Big fan of hazard stripes on Space Marines. Everything to break up that monotonous single-colour brick.

Well, yesterday I mostly tidied up and reorganized things. There also will be a dedicated wargaming weekend again around the end of July this year. Last year we did Ronin and Longstreet, this year it's going to be Dux Britanniarum (Anglo-Saxons defending a village against Viking raiders. Should be great.) and something Fantasy actually (we'll use either Kings of War or Hail Caesar, that's still up for debate. I'd be on board for either really). Re-read the Kings of War rules and it's really funny - as GW kill off Fantasy Mantic Games will be the last ones to actually print and sell Warhammer rulebooks. Because yeah, KoW is Warhammer, as written by Alessio Cavatore. So it's a very efficient, condensed game (and has references to chess), but it doesn't feel like a wargame. Nothing wrong with that, I suppose. I hear great things about KoW for its simplicity and quickness to play (that will get me some remarks again for taking too long on my own turns whilst gaming) and hey, you don't need much for putting the old Fantasy armies on a table and have a bit of fun. Wouldn't have any sort of problem with Hail Caesar either. Solid, solid rules.

So I got my Dark Elves together again. Dusted off a bunch of units, actually started painting 5 more Dark Riders I'd had lying around primed for the past 10 years or more. By the end of July I hope to have the following units done:

20 Spearmen (done, only need a banner)
20 Witch Elves (primed, no idea if I get these done at all)
10 Cold One Knights (need to be reattached to their Cold Ones and/or their bases)
10 Dark Riders (5 finished, 5 more to finish.)

10 Crossbow Elves (done)
10 Crossbow Elves (done)
10 Corsairs (done)

10 Shadows
10 Executioners of Har Ganeth
10 Black Guard
5 Harpies

2 Bolt Throwers (those need repair i'm afraid. Have yet to check)
Dark Lord on Dragon (he needs a few bits of paint touched up again and I finally put him on a base last night. He needs that done, but otherwise he's good.
Noble on Black Pegasus (This one will need some repairs I'm afraid, but should be only minor things)

High Priestress of the Abyss

This is just a list based on the Kings of War dark elves list. In fact I've got quite a lot of extra minis. For Black Guard, Executioners and Corsairs for instance I've got 15-16 models per unit, a fair few more spear elves and crossbow elves, cold one knights and so on. Shame there are no chariots or Cauldron of Blood on that list, but if worse comes to worst I'll use those as parts of similar units. Like putting the Cold One Chariot into a big unit of knights and the cauldron into the unit of Witch Elves. Might be a good idea for not having to paint all that many of those too if time is tight.

I was wondering about doing a whole dark elves army, but for Kings of War, it makes sense!

Love those tiny painted shields on the prior page, I assume those are some sort of tranfers, right? They look marvelous!

@RiTides: Yeah, quite. Originally the plan was to rebase the whole lot for Impetus, because it's so much easier to handle, Impetus is a very nice set of rules, and it generally is a more sane approach than having single based minis. Now i'm back in the world of "regiment bases" and wondering how I should pull that off. Cheers, yeah, the shields on the 15mm Persians are decals (except for the leopard skin ones, those are painted).

@Gitsplitta: Cheers. It's kinda like the painting I did for the Lion Rampant games last fall - quickly, quickly, doesn't have to look great, just so that I can play with them. But then again, everything I paint also has to have a certain degree of representative value to it because... well, that's what I do. Bad enough I always have to hear "why are those models not painted? I'm shocked!" comments when ever I get out Talisman or any other boardgame which uses miniatures.

Looking sharp! (As a stupid chariot can!) Those wolves are just lovely!

Are the bronze bits NMM or a true metallic? If the latter, could you do a little tutorial? I have never been thrilled with the results I get from that.

@Wehrkind: Thanks muchly. That's regular metallics. I usually don't do tutorials any more unless I get hired to due to very selfish reasons and lacking the time. If I allow myself the leisure to write articles I usually go for gaming stuff I'm interested in or reviews. I know that tutorials are all the bloody rage, especially in video form, but I fail to see the value. Especially on Facebook I see sad, sad examples of people losing their stuff if they see themselves confronted with anything they don't have a bloody youtube tutorial for. Very paint-by-numbers and thus counter-productive to miniature painting. Anyway, rant over, here we go: VGC tinny tin base, VMC old gold, some inks where required, highlights with VMC Gold where required, metal medium or mithril silver highlights. It's as simple as that. This is how I do it on these Space Wolves.

Finally finished, that Logan Grimnar. The base still needs doing of course, but I'll do those in the end on all the minis.

Hope you like him!

Oh, by the way: The Shattered Crown Kickstarter Fantasy miniatures game (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/chappellm/the-shattered-crown-the-fantasy-war-game-reinvigor ) started last night. I had the honour to paint a few minis for them and wrote up a little early bird review of some of their minis:

I hear you on the tutorial side; I really rather loathe video tutorials (or really most knowledge transfer via video). That color list helps a great deal actually; it never occurred to me to start with a tin base. I am also a little surprised you use the Vallejo metals; I feel they have flakes that are too big or something, as they never come out smooth for me. I am going to have to sit and practice on cardboard for a while it seems! I hate it when it is me, not the paint

Also, because I am half wrecked from presenting and socializing all day and lost my manners, thank you!

@Wehrkind: No problem. Yeah, I've taken a liking to Vallejo's metallics. Not sure about others, but they just work for me I think. With Gold it's all about the base. Learned that in 2005 and pretty much since then I've been using Tin Bitz or Tinny Tin as a base (with some exceptions). It works great for a basecoat for gold. Some people like to use brown too or of course ochre.

Here's a quick update on the characters/thunderwolf cav including a shoddy picture.

Sorry about the quality, hope you can see anything.

I am glad to have found you over here Sigur, I used to follow your work over at Warseer many moons ago. You seem to be a better painter than ever.

@Thraxas Of Turai: Thanks very much for commenting, Thraxas! I'm still very active on Warseer (with more plogs than ever!), but pretty much everything I post over there I drop into this thread as well.

@Solar_lion: Cheers, let me know how it works out!

Hooooooooookay, I forgot about this brilliant Space Wolves trait that the last 10% of the painting takes up 90% of the time. But I got at least a few things pretty much finished now.

...and these two here I'll try to finish tomorrow:

Sorry for the crappy pictures. I'll take proper ones once the bases are done too. (and yes, that one Wolf rider dude's boltgun barrel will be drilled out then as well )

Tonight's gaming was postponed until tomorrow. We'll give Nuts! (2nd edition) by Two Hour Wargames a try. Pretty pumped for that. I wanted to give this game a go for quite a while now. A few months ago I did a solo test game of Nuts! and it's just worth a try because it's so different to anything and models the fact that your guys on the battlefield very often won't do what you want them to (a very important fact which can not be emphasized enough, especially in skirmish gaming) oh so well.

I also got a pretty big parcel on the way which might arrive tomorrow. Would be great to get that before the weekend. Can't beat toys in time for the weekend.

Yay, the package arrived today!

...a little bit of initial work later:

You can also see a few 28mm minis in the picture for scale (because I'm lazy and I haven't put them away).
