This thread is about magnetising models, and how many dakkatites do it, to what models and for what purpose.

I shall lead by example:

It started with my Tau's exo-suits and a desire to try new stuff, now there's a total of 3 weapon mounts in the army that aren't magnetised.
Then it went on with my IG demolisher's sponsons and the guns on the sentinels.

I try to magnetise anything that sticks too far off the model to make storage in an army carrier difficult. For example, both my exorcists have the pipe organs magnetized so they sit in the foam nicely. I also magnetize Dread arms and Immolator guns so I can switch them for different lists or remove them for Weapon Destroyed results.
I have thought about magnetizing weapons options on infantry, but generally I find it is easier to just make a new model with a different option. Plus it nets me more figures for Apocalypse games.

At one point I magnetized the bases of all my models, and transported them in a box with a metal bottom so they all stuck. I stopped because carrying around 3000+ points of lead in a big wood and metal box became silly.

I am failry nuts when it comes to magnets.

All bases are magnetized (or papersteeled so that they adhere to magnets).

Flight stands, etc as well. Many weapon options are magnetized for purposes of thrift (read: Cheap bastard).

Magnetize everything I can justify changing from game to game. It just saves a lot of money when you can have one model fill many roles, and when codexes / rulesets make huge changes.

Wings on Daemon princes, mounts on Tau suits, Tyranid monstrous creature arms. Were I to play marines I'm sure that I'd mag up all the special weapons and vehicle wargear also. Probably put in enough magnetic material to swap vehicles to chaos if desired also.

Plus it's fun to mix and match all the stuff to make horrifying creations - Daemon prince with tau weapon pods. Crisis suit with carnifex talons & wings.

Edit: yeah flight stands too. Magnetizing those just makes transportation so much easier.

I do a decent amount of magnetizing. So far I have magnetized all the different weapons options on almost all my eldar models (falcons, serpents, grav platforms, war walkers, vypers) as well as magnetize the flying bases on the tanks and vypers. My next project will be to purchase a carnifex or two and magnetize all their arm options for them.

All in all. Only when needed.

I magnetize more on bigger models, or those that are fairly expensive. I won't magnetize weapons on a marine, for example, because I could just get an alternative marine.

But, any vehicle with multiple options gets magnets, monstrous critters, or pricey ICs

I had a phase when I had to make everything swappable. Nowadays I use the same army list all the time, so there's no point, and if need be I can afford to buy extra models.

Magnets have poles, not charges :( It is a common misconception that they are the same thing

and yeah I use'em

Nope.
I have enough models and variations that I don't need to. I can just swap out the entire model.

In the case of vehicles, turrets are swappable and with dreads, all of the arms are removable and a tight fit, so they stay on and are swappable as required.

I enjoy the modelling aspect of making things swappable.

Made my son's Christmas and birthday gifts of landraider, drop pod and captain fully magnetised with all weapon options.

LOL - he was asking if he could field a LR with flame guns on one side and hurricane bolters on the other.

I'm uncomfortable with having swappable weapons. It seems like the model would have less personality if it could be changed. Silly, I know.

Generally, I find that magnets don't do much for me.

Either the WYSIWYG item in question is way too difficult to magnetize onto a model (especially with small troops), or you have to buy an entirely new model to get the weapon in question.

I tried to magnetize the wave serpent turret weapons once and ruined the turret. That sort of turned me off of further magenetization attempts.

I've magnetised my Autarch along with some converted aspect warrior weapons so he can have all the completely unnecessary gear.

Next up are my 10-man warlock squad that will have their right arm sockets magnetized to swap out the sword/spear options.

However, some of my models don't get magnets since it's not expeditious to do so. Namely the old metal heavy weapon platforms and warwalkers - they've been outfitted with square brass tubing instead. Also the newer aspect warrior exarchs with different weapon options tend to have weedy shoulder points that don't seat a strong magnet easily. It's possible but more effort than I like to invest.

Plastic-to-plastics and plastics-to-metal get them over metal-to-metal. I'm probably not using strong enough magnets, but metal bits are a tad too heavy to stay connected properly.

Just did a Drop pod with all the doors mag, also did a landraider with mag weapons for the crusader/reedemer and other parts.

Use to have 2 mag predators with all the options.

Did 3 armies worth of eldar with all magnetic flying stands and weapons on the tanks (3 falcons and 6 serpents).

Did a necron army where 15 destroyers were on flying stands with magnets in them.

Did the flames of war Sturmovick box set for a friend with inset mag in the plains and flight stands with mag in them.

Guess I'm a nut!

Mag is the only way to go for flight stands. Once you have some, it is nearly impossible to go back to the little clear plastic fragilities.

Feasting on the souls of unworthy opponents

I use a lot of magnets, and to start...

http://www.kjmagnetics.com/

That's the best place to go get magnets.

I magnetize my crisis suits; each arm has a magnet on it, and every suit weapon is magnetized, so that I can mix and match as needed. My orks are also magnetized (nobs) with one arm each so that they can substitute things in for the slugga/choppa. Kombi weapons, powerklaws, big choppas....there are as many variations to take with Nobs as there are with suits, so I try leaving room open for it.

I use a lot of magnets (I also buy them from k&JMagnets). If the sprues come with extra weapons, I magnitize the arms and in some cases the hands (Assault sgt has combat shield or bolt pistol).
I am also magnitizing the torso's of my command squad so I can put their bodies on bikers legs or just let then hoof it with the legs they came with.
If my vehicles have changable weapons, I'll magnitize them sometime down the road as well.

What size magnets do you use for flight stands and the models they attach to Augustus?

From that website:

Neodymium Magnet Safety

The neodymium magnets we sell are extremely strong, and must be handled with care to avoid personal injury and damage to the magnets. Fingers and other body parts can get severely pinched between two attracting magnets. Neodymium magnets are brittle, and can peel, crack or shatter if allowed to slam together. Eye protection should be worn when handling these magnets, because shattering magnets can launch pieces at great speeds.

The strong magnetic fields of neodymium magnets can also damage magnetic media such as floppy disks, credit cards, magnetic I.D. cards, cassette tapes, video tapes or other such devices. They can also damage televisions, VCRs, computer monitors and other CRT displays. Never place neodymium magnets near electronic appliances.

Children should not be allowed to handle neodymium magnets as they can be dangerous. Small magnets pose a choking hazard and should never be swallowed or inserted into any part of the body.

Never allow neodymium magnets near a person with a pacemaker or similar medical aid. The strong magnetic fields of the magnet can affect the operation of such devices.

Neodymium magnets are brittle and prone to chipping and cracking. They do not take kindly to machining.

Neodymium magnets will lose their magnetic properties if heated above 175° F (80° C).

Neodymium magnets should never be burned, as burning them will create toxic fumes.
Like any tool or toy, neodymium magnets can be fun and useful, but must always be treated with care

Anything that isn't infantry that has alternate weapons I'll throw magnets on.
The Space Marine Dreadnought was fun but not much of a challenge. Same goes for the Landraider and Landspeeder.
I'm even bought a 'Nid Battleforce just because I wanted to magnitize the different weapon options on the Carnifex! I'm considering buying another Carnifex to do the same with! I might invest in the Behemoth Crusher Brood just to have something fun and challenging to do for a while. I enjoy it and it helps me improve skills I suck at like using green stuff.

What other armies have fun stuff with lots of options to go magnet crazy on?

Gavin Thorne wrote:What size magnets do you use for flight stands and the models they attach to Augustus?

Well, I have used a variety of sizes. The most common, for jetbikes and destroyers , eldar weapons and like sized non tank models was a pair of soda can proportioned 1/4 inch by 1/8 inch cylinder magnets, Dimensions: 1/8" dia. x 1/4" thick

http://www.kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=D24DIA

For flight stands there are 2 key parts, I have used 2 magnets, for some models and for others a single magnet in the stem and a metal plate on the model itself, both work well. One needs to test the bond strength indpendantly before assembly and use epoxy glue or better not super glue. The other key part is the use of plumbers or 2 part epoxy putty to make an inset or an organic mount to hold the magnet on the post and or on/in the target model.

*A hole can be drilled into a solid piece and the magnets epoxied in the inset hole, alternatively for solid pieces.
* I have also mounted jet models with mag hardpoints by putting larger magnets inside the fuselage and anchoring them with internal blobs of 2 part epxy to completely obscure them in the finished models. Its a neat trick because then you can make a totally hidden magnetic hard mount.

For tanks' flight stands stronger magnets are advised. I have used cubes and discs up to 1 inch in diameter (for discs, cubes at .25 inch cubic). I used the same 2 part epoxy anchoring methods described above. I also epoxied metal discs to tank hulls as anchor points and as hardpoints for eldar weapons with magnets in them etc.

I could probably dig up some images to ad to this thread if desired, post as much.

Good luck.
