Hello Dakka!
I was just curious what your first car was? Do you still have it? How did it break down or wreck?

Personally I own a white '99 Mercury Mystique. Bought it in 03 with about 73k miles. Still drive it to this day and it has run up to about 130k miles now. Worst thing that has happened is when the timing chain broke which cost me about 1,000 dollars to fix. To this day i still have no idea what a timing chain is and why its so expensive.

A 93 nissan micra with 50000Km on the clock. It was in excellent nick when I got it, but it got broken into twice and stolen once, so it was a little more beat up afterwards. Still, handy little car for dodging round Dublin's narrow streets.

1981 Chevy Cavalier was the first car I had full-time access to.

The first car I bought was a 1997 Chevy Geo Metro. The first vehicle I bought was a 1997 Harley-Davidson Fatboy. (I graduated college in December 1996. Bought the bike in March, the car in June. The bike was both more expensive, and had a bigger engine)

Yeah, I ended up having to hotwire my Micra to start it for two weeks. I always dreaded getting pulled over by the Gardaí and having to explain myself.
They crowbarred open the passanger door too, so it was all bent and leaked rain- not something you want in this country

That was a real car. It had a starting handle.

Next I had a Ford Sierra Estate, then a Citroen CX, then I went without a car for about 12 years, then I got a Mercedes C class which I've still got.

My first car was a 1979 Fiesta. I got it in 1995. I had to rivet sheet metal to the floor so that I wouldn't have 'Flinestone brakes'. It was fun for loading up with three friends and sliding out of control down snowy hills in the winter. We'd careen off snowbanks or plow up on top of them. Get everyone out, pick the end of the car up and put it back on the road. Ended up bending the rear axle. (I wonder how that happened!)

Thinking back that was reaaaalllly stupid. Don't try this at home kids.

Really, really slow off the mark but when you hit 60km/hr it was suddenly able to accelerate really well.
Top speed achieved = 140km/hr, had to slow as the windows were violently shaking.

First car - only got it a year ago as I live in London so dont really need to drive. Only have 5000 miles on it so far too...

73 mpg rated, but I get about 52 mpg from mostly city driving. Still, only had to fill up about 12 times in a year.

1994 Chevy S-10. 4 cylinder w/ 5 speed manual transmission. Got it from my brother in 2006. Had a crack in the windshield.

The hood was missing a bolt on the passenger side. Found that out when the hood flew up and cracked my windshield on the lower driver side.

Got a nice dent on the bed on the passenger side. Was making a right hand turn and some little $h!thead wasn't paying attention. Her brand new Kia was totaled. I got a dent.

Runs great with 232k miles on it. Got plans to drop the engine and tranny for a Mazda Miata V6 and 6 speed tranny. [Atleast, I hope that will work. Been told that the Mazda's engine and tranny will fit without a lot of work.]

Embarrassingly enough my first automobile was the same model as my birth year. My parents gave me their old car when they bought their new one, so my first car was a 1984 Nissan Pulsar. The truly funny thing is the car is a micro machine with real engine and steering and I'm 6'3". So when I got in looked like I had my knees up to my ears and that I was about to roll it due to my weight causing the suspension to drop, lol.

My first car, in 1988, was a 1971 Volvo, as seen below (but the 2 door version):

http://www.philseed.com/images/volvo-144-bw-1971.jpg

She was more body putty than actual metal, and my dad got her for a song... $25 and a favor. the favor was to haul away some junk from the guy's garage (a co-worker).
In the "junk" was an old lamp, made from a part of an old airplane engine. My dad showed it to a different co-worker, whose husband was a pilot and airplane fanatic. She promptly offered to buy it from him... for $25.

The old girl had your typical Volvo electrical problems and, after a little over a year, the transmission went out. It wasn't worth repairing, so my dad & brother put some brake fluid in the transmission & we drove it to a junk yard... where we sold it for $50.

Dad might've put $150 or so into her over that year, so he ended up spending about $100 on her, overall. Not a bad investment for a year's worth of driving.

I still miss that car and I swear that I'm going to have another one day.
