I dont really like the giant eye thing, its too retro scifi whereas your army is creepy and more horror based.

I like the big eye thing but maybe not for your army - I did the same sort of thing for one of me tzeentch daemon princes - here is a link to my gallery (I didn't want to link the image since this is your p-log)

I am hopefully gonna get it painted up soon.

Yeah, I'm coming to pretty much the same conclusion -- though I'll probably finish the two I started, just to see how they turn out.
I like your take a lot.

Well thank you, folks, for the kind words.

Grinding continues. Here’s a look at the process in several stages, leg by leg.

First, the “Bone Leg”:
From this basic start…

I glued the end of the leg blade onto the soul (corpse cart bit):

…then began applying greenstuff binding the soul to the daemon engine:

… then I worked in greenstuffed daemonic tissue to this point:

(You can also see I began to work on the rib bones above as well.)

…then, after another layer:

That leg’s getting close to ready.

The “Porch of Maidens Leg” is also close:

The “Hands Leg” is a bit messier in composition…

… and messier yet, after another round of greenstuffing:

(You can see in that picture too how I’ve tried to knick and carve up the leg blades a bit, to give them a slightly more organic feel.)

(Another angle):

And then, I’ve begun working on another of the legs, which I’ve mentally named the “Feeding Leg”:

So that’s where I am on the project right now.

A lot of pictures, and I realize there may not be much to comment on here, but wanted to update things mainly in the interest of showing progression step by step, as the greenstuff takes root, grows, sows new seeds….

Very interesting stuff. I look forward to seeing more of your work. Do you play in Boston? I've never seen daemons like that in the area.

I've been gulping down this thread for 2 hours or so, and I must admit your models are awesome!!!

Your ideas always seem so out-of-the-world, but you seem to work out everything to a perfect chaotic flavour!

I'm really amazed, and I can't do much but send some more congratulations for your work!!

This April I tried some similar GS work on an Inquisitor Lord, who's gradually becoming possessed by a Plaguebearer...

The approach seems quite similar, but I really like the Tzeentchian corruption on the Horrors!!!!
I'll definitely have to get my hands on some!!!

Thanks anyway for the inspiration huh!

Progress on the Soul Grinder continues. Magi, adepts and their vassals scurry over the chassis, working their eldritch engineering. Warriors of the Host attend, bearing totems and talismans seized in battle – souls to feed the Beast.
The creature still lies in pieces, awaiting the final rituals of full possession and battle baptism.
Even in pieces, it twitches and stirs. Fires of pale blue flicker fitfully in the recesses of the thing.
Its time is drawing near.

Ahem.
I’ve basically finished the legs, at this point. No major changes there, for the most part. Just more daemonic ligature, greenstuffed in.
Though I did add a head and face to one of the legs:

And (another angle)

(I have to admit, I really like the way this pose and composition came out.)

I’ve also been working on the upper “torso” of the creature, and more specifically on its “head.”

Well, it’s not really going to have a head. But it does need to have a Daemonic Maw – both to create some compositional focus for the creature, and to create a firing point from which to measure blasts of phlegm and/or tongue.

Giving the creature a single daemonic head seems a bit out of place, though. The design/anatomy/architecture of the thing doesn’t really suggest a single entity to much as a teeming cage or cauldron of bound souls.
So I’m going with a different approach – a cluster of men’s heads, screaming in pain and horror as they channel and unleash the evil energies of their dark possessor.

I gathered a few heads that seemed to be screaming suitably:

Then I started braiding in a wire skeleton:

Affixed heads:

And started working in some daemonic tissue:

I still have a ways to go on this. More greenstuff daemon tissue will be needed. I might add another head or two. The mens’ mouths have to be spitting some kind of energy fire. I might even sculpt in some kind of daemon mouth/maw around the heads. (Not sure about that last idea, though. Any thoughts?)

Thanks for looking.

Excellent work! i'd love to see what you'd do for screamers, perhaps Dark Eldar/Eldar Jetbikes? Although this is supposed to be a possessed Guard army...

I dont feel that the heads are obvious enough to be a maw, they just look like more souls.

I think a maw around the heads would be perfect, because as corpses said, it would set them apart from that super awesome cyclone of souls you got going on there.

IIRC, three of those heads are ghoul ((EDIT: I lie. Those are from the Corpse Cart)) heads, and the fourth from the flagellants sprue.

I'm still going back and forth about the maw idea.
Thanks for the kind words.

Wow. Good God!

I plain forgot about this thread until today. My mistake. I have to say that your Bloodletters look like a Bloodletter and a Broodlord had a baby. Or babies.

This army as a whole it just breath taking. Can't wait to see it all together. One big ol' group shot w/ a bunch of little shots thrown in.

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted, but the Soul Grinder continues, slowly and incrementally, to take form. I often take it out and tinker, not always constructively, but at least organically. The creature is finding its way to material existence.

First, I added a few more soul faces to the creature’s maw.

((That's one more soul face; I ended up adding another as well. Here's a closer look at that first one: )

Then I worked on the connective “neck” tissue:

This work became an attempt to evoke a grotesque cluster of nested “necks”:

At first I was thinking of this connective tissue as a writhing spiral of tentacular tissue:

But as my thinking and sculpting evolved, I began to think of the joints connecting these “necks” as maws themselves:

Pursuing that idea, I decided to try sculpting in a bigger maw/mouth/ring of teeth further down the spiral. At this point I took inspiration and instruction from a great tutorial, posted by ebolatheripe over on The Daemonic Legion board.

Taking ebolatheripe’s technique as a starting point, I grafted on a funnel-shaped base partway up the maw spiral:

After that part dried, I applied another band to the rim of the “funnel,” cut in teeth, let that work dry, then molded on a third, thin band over the base of the teeth to create a lip, producing:

Another angle:

And:

That first mouth is a bit large and out of proportion to the rest of the spiral, but I think I can build up the “neck” below to make it work.

Meanwhile, I plan to graft in a few smaller mouths, these ones further out on the spiral spitting the soul faces themselves.

So that’s where I am now. Still WIP. Still in the throes of creation. Still molding plastic ideas and possibilities.

How’s it look so far?

That is seriously awesome. The mouth doesn't look *that* out of proportion, although that could just be the pics. Any chance of a mock-up pic with the legs on?

Those are some amazing green stuff skills you have there and this is a fantastic project that like a few others I'm going to watch with real interest.

I’ve (basically) finished sculpting on the Soul Grinder (!), and assembled the beast, producing:

From the front:

From the right side:

From behind, right side:

From behind, left side:

From the right side: good look at the Maw

From behind (I do plan to do just a bit more ‘daemonizing’ on this side.)

It’s finished!

Well, finished sculpting.

Well, nearly. I still have just a bit more tinkering to do (on the back, and around the ball joints at the tops of the legs).

Just another day or two, then, before I prime the beast and start painting (shudder).

Thanks for looking.
