Actually, not even an army shot, strictly speaking. I culled out most of the converted stuff in the army, herded them into a light box (it was a tight fit), and asked a friend to take a picture.

I've begun painting the soul grinder.


So far, I've concentrated on blocking out the major color areas, to make sure my scheme is going to work and the composition will have the flow I want.

All of which looks more or less in order:


That image is darker than I hope the final look will be. This angle and lighting looks a bit better:


Nothing you see here is done yet. I still have a lot of detail to pick out, shading to do, washes to apply....

The final result should look a lot lighter and sharper, with (for example) the blue energies shading up to white blue to white (helping to pick out each coil and so on).

What I am relieved to see, at this stage, is that if I can pull off a pretty good paint job (at least by my standards), it should help to clarify the model and sort out the muddle of things going on in there.

Feedback at this stage would be helpful. Do folks like the balance, the flow, the warm/dark rhythm, the palette?

Oooooh tzeeechy.

Yeah the contrast between the shrieking bodies and the whirling coils helps a lot in "sharping things up" (I mean you can make them stand out and avoid the model from being a mess)

For some more contrast I would have thought of a bronze instead of plain grey metal (which is, IMHO, too close to the bluish hue of the coils), but that is a personal view...

Anyway great job for the start, it can only get better as time goes!

Painting on the Soul Grinder proceeds. I’ll be posting pictures on that later this week, once I’m a bit farther along.

Meanwhile, on the modeling front, I’ve returned to the flamer conversions. As of now, this is the only unit I’ve been fielding that isn’t converted, so I do want to come up with something appropriate – something that fits in with the theme of the army, and something that is suitably freaky.

My initial efforts on this came out a bit cartoony. But I did like the starting idea, namely, using guard/flagellant hybrids to suggest guardsmen being flayed by Tzeentchian possession – ripped apart as they are transformed into vessels of Warp energies capable of floating or flying (since the flamers move as jump units) and unleashing warpfire and/or breath of chaos.

So I pulled some of my early work apart and applied some new elements.

The “eyeballs-in-the-hands” idea was spawned, of course, by that creature in Pan’s Labyrinth:


Then I began weaving in some greenstuffed daemonic tissue:

(Pay no attention to that blob of greenstuff by the guy’s neck – that was just a bit of mess, later removed)

Still more work to do on these, but I like the way they’re taking form. Seems much more in keeping with the rest of the Host. I like they way they look/feel helpless and haunted – ensnared in the throes and grip of the Ruinous Powers.

If anything constructive, I think the basing in general could use some variation and different textures.

I've made a fair amount of progress on painting the Soul Grinder.




The thing's a beast -- very difficult to paint, what with all its layers and confusion and chaos. But I knew that.




The pictures are a bit blurry, this next one particularly so, but (I feel) the most expressive:



I still have a lot of detailing and such to do, particularly on faces and other focal elements. But it's getting there.



Migs and others have suggested the scheme lacks contrast, what with the blues and metals. And they're right. But I'm feeling a bit stubborn: I want to preserve the palette and color scheme of the overall army. So the thing ends up looking kind of confusing. Not ideal, but I'm okay with it.

IMHO, you got it right with the palette. Not much contrast between metal and daemonic energy/flesh? That's not the point in here.

What I want to express is that the parts that stand out are the poor fellows trapped within the whirling daemonic coils.

And that's what it is: twisted guardsmen whose souls [have been offered to Chaos / they offered to Chaos] (tick the correct answer lol)! This is one of the main theme of your army: the mutation of a guardsmen army.

And what's the workforce of the IG? Its lowly soldiers! So the Grinder empowers it perfectly!



Oh, and good job on the flamers, btw... I like the gas canister in their back!

I love the Soulgrinder. I've been following it since you started, and I've just loved the idea. I think what might help in terms of contrast would be the use of some lighter blues, and maybe even some shades of purple for the energy. Even then, it looks absolutely terrifying as is. And I mean that in the best way possible

I just love this concept and they way you execute it so, congratulation you earned a cookie!
