Seriously, no one wants to see WIP pics?!? These Cadians must really be boring & uninspiring to everyone, then! I must be slipping in my painting abilities. Gives me something to ponder.
The tops are done with hilights, and first coat of the Oxford Blue is on the chest plates/shoulder plates & trousers. Driving me nuts, especially trying to do the uniforms on the 2 Cadians on base with the heavy weapons. Feel like I need a microscope & micro-brush to get in to some of the nooks & crannies! Have a lot of touch-up work to do for edges of armor, then will start doing hilights on the blues - then will do the shading on the tops. After that will do the helmets/boots/belts, then weapons. My guess is at least another week before they're all finished. Hope that the Wraithguard, Jet Bikes & Vyper get here from Denmark soon so that I can start working on them, will need the break!
Oh, hey - one more thing with the Eldar. The last 2 Scorpions I posted had the mandiblasters done with Bright Bronze instead of the Glorious Gold; color change had been hinted at by a few folks after the previous Scorpions & Karandras. I'm not sure I see much of a difference, but if folks like it better I'll repaint the rest of the Scorpions' mandiblasters (there ya go, slice'n'dice)...

Searth, thanks again as always, my Eldar friend (Searth has been a PM buddy for a few months, giving me gaming advice with my Eldar army). You're much braver than I am doing the conversions - I fear ruining a model after I've shelled out cash for it (and I've shelled out quite a bit thus far, even on eBay). I'm sticking to the old-school Craftworld; if I ever start with another army (will probably be Grey Knights or Chaos SM's) will do my own color scheme for that and possibly start doing some conversions. As for Karandras - he was actually included in an eBay auction for 4 Scorpions; don't think the seller knew what he had. I didn't actually realize it until they arrived and I got a good look at the Scorpions. I've actually used him twice, and both times he's done well for me - but will probably just keep him on hold for my next Apoc game. Nice that he makes the rest of my Scorpies fearless & has eternal warrior. I've got most of the Phoenix Lords now - just have to get Baharroth & Maugan Ra, will then have them all (I'm pretty sure). As for my "spirit host" - don't know if you read it or not, but I'll soon have 20 Wraithguard; would love to use them in conjunction with Prince Yriel & my WraithLord. Will just explain that the Prince & his host were hanging out on Ulthwe for a while, then they got "naturalized". Again, don't think I'd be able to use al 5 of my Lords with the Guard unless it's an Apoc game. As for the old-school guardian, thanks for posting the link of the whole squad. I'm not sure I'm going to expand the squad much more, partially because of how rare they seem to be (and therefore more pricey). Am debating whether or not to even paint her - even though she's now primed.
Folks, I'd recommend checking out Searth's blog - he's just started it, and has a cool color palette started for his Eldar. Thanks for following, everyone!

OK, Briancj - here ya go! I'm starting to get flustered with these guys, and may need to take a short break (hope that my goodies come from Denmark this weekend). Will post another pic in a few days - either more of the Cadians or maybe even an Eldar Vyper! Too many nooks & crannies in these guys that need painting. Doing 8 of them wasn't bad, but 38 of them is trying my patience! Wonder how the rest of you guys can do tons of these minis all at once (Orks, Gaunts, etc). I've got a new-found respect for the lot of you!

Yay bunny! You're baaaaack! Missed you, girl. Thanks for the words of encouragement. My Wraithguard & Vyper didn't come in the mail today (sad pouty face), but I got a bit of a break with some kill team practice - and am now ready to get back to the Cadians to do some hilighting & helmets/boots/belts. May actually finish up one or two of the guys to give me a boost as well. I think I'm ~40% done with the guys, so I'm starting to feel that the end stretch will soon be in sight!

You deal with it in small batches. For Guard, a squad of 10 at a time.

Briancj, thanks for the advice. I'd gotten the hilights done on the armor & the trousers by the time I read your post, so will start "batching" them now in groups of 10. Wish me luck! Will post one or two from each batch as they're in progress.

This is a post for a fellow gamer from my FLGS who I've been giving suggestions to re: washes & shading (at least, the technique I use). Told him that this Swooping Hawk showed it the best. Hey buddy. guess who's back! Had the by now so expect more late night posts as my daughter takes fro the bottle more!
The thing I love most about this blog is it never ends! Whilst I am more interested in the eldar that the guard I am happy that the guard allow you to try out new colours or techniques that can translate across. I like how you have done the yellow on them. I like that it is a darker yellow which may well represent a life in the trenches unlike an imperial fist (who I lways imagine getting a techmarine to shine the suit regularly).
Although, not intended for me, I love the hawks. They remind me of the way that the craft worlds are portrayed in the Dawn of War Games. I think it's cracking.

Cool. Thanks, taff. Glad to hear that everything went well with your wife and that the baby's here & doing well. You read my lamentations about having so many of the Guard to paint yet - and Briancj's recommendation to do them in squads. I think that getting a bit of a breather yesterday helped - I'm back to doing all of them again (am currently working on helmets/boots/belts), and am finding myself paying attention to the details like I hadn't been doing for a little while. Was on Facebook last night chattinng with a 40K player in the UK for a few hours, which let my paints dry up I'd mixed (bummer) - but think I'll be able to get a few hours in this morning and hopefully get the browns done. Expect to see another WIP pic within the next day or so.
And no, I didn't get the Vyper & the Wraithguard in the mail yet (grumble grumble grumble), so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for this week. Will be painting them as soon as they arrive - and will be using tons of Green Stuff to complete another Vyper that I've got bits for. Won't look that pretty, but at least I'll have 2 Vypers then!

Bath painting i the way that I do it to. Personally I'm a weird batch painter. When doing the bulk stuff I only ever do it in 5's. But then when I hit the smaller details I switch to 10's.

Weird. Both Briancj & taffiarti recommended I do the Cadians in batches, but for some insane reason I'm continuing to do them en masse. Am half-way done with the helmets/belts/boots (see below), and am realizing that I've got to go back and do some of the necks (hadn't realized they'd show as much above the collar of the tops). Know that after I do the necks I'll have a little more to do with the yellow to touch up some of the neck areas. Have done the yellow hilights, so after browns are done I'll do a little brown hilights - then will do the Badab wash over boots & helmets. After that will come the base coat on weapons (Gunmetal Grey, Vallejo model color) and equipment, then backpacks & camp rolls (will do in a moss green variant I mix up from Vallejo med. olive, plague brown, and dark grey), then shadow wash on the yellow, then shadow wash on faces/hands/trousers, and then finally the final coat on weapons. I'd call the group ~60% done at this point, may pick 10 of them to finish up so that my gaming buddy has another squad to use this week (if he wants them to use tomorrow night). Personally, i don't think they look all that great until they get the washes on them - so expect to see a HUGE change in them later this week after I start the washes. Will do a side-by-side of one with & without the washes to show the difference.

Yayyyyyyyyy! Went to my mailbox this evening, and the box arrived from the Netherlands! Happy happy joy joy! Behold below the 12 Wraithguard, all nice & ready to be primed. I'm overcome with waves of giddiness, I'm so excited about them! My buddy also sent a Vyper that I may try to make molds of, as well as a Jet Bike w/o a rider. He also sent me 3 warrior monks for a game he's making - will be painting them eventually as well. I also got the 5 Spiders I'd won on eBay (they're also in the pic below), but they'll need a good bath in acetone to strip them before I prime them. Priming will be in 2 days, and then I'll be focused on getting the Wraithguard completed - will take a few days, but oh dear God will it be worth it. I'll be dreaming of fielding 20 Wraithguard with 2 Warlocks w/ Seer & Enhance, along with 2 Wraithlord. And I may add in a Farseer & Eldrad, so that I can Fortune them as well. Cadians will simply have to take a back seat for a little while - unless I need a break with my WG's (which I doubt I will)! Can't wait to post the pic of the Wraith army with prince Yriel in the middle of them all!

Wish I could field all 5 of my WraithLords - imagine 20 of the WG's (2 squads of 10 each), Farseer w/ one & Eldrad with other squad, and 2 Lords with one squad & 3 with the other! SHOCK AND AWE! Will use at next APOC game, for sure!

Here's a pic of the beginning of the washes. Everything's painted except for weapons & eagle emblems. Model on left is pre-wash with the Badab Black (Citadel), one on right is post-wash. I did hilights on the boots, belts & helmets prior to using the wash. Once all models have been washed with the black, will do the weapons - which will also be washed with the black to bring out the detail & mute the silvers a little bit. Will then do the olive green mixes for the backpacks & canteen covers (they'll also get the black wash), then a wash on the yellows (yellow & plague brown mix), then my own black wash for faces & trousers (using dish soap). Belts will get the last wash with the Badab Black, as I'm sure some of the yellow wash will get into the belt cracks & this will need to be corrected. More pics to come!
BTW, the spiders are stripped & primed, and the wraithguard have been primed & are ready to start painting. I also got a molding kit - will see if I can make some of the missing pieces from my old Vyper from the new Vyper. Will probably do the Vyper in the same style as the last War Walker, keeping to the traditional Ulthwe colors. May do a bit of the Gory Red detailing on fins or something...

Cadians are coming along nicely. Badab wash has been done over all the browns, weapons have their first coat of Gunmetal Grey and are now getting the second coat (where needed) with 50/50 Gunmetal Grey & Negron Black. LasCannons (in front of pic) have been done with exception of eagle motifs (will be done in off-white). Guess I'm now a little over 80% done - after finishing the grey/black mix details, will then have greens, then yellow shade wash, then black wash on face/trousers, then will finish weapons - or may decide to hold on finishing weapons until the men are 100% completed. In any case, they're getting ready for the last lap, then on to the Wraithguard! Thanks for the post, bunnygirl! Have a great week, everyone, and get ready for MechaniCon - those who are on the east coast & coming next weekend. Should be a great time! I'll be there on Saturday, look for me with my Ulthwe Eldar crew on the open tables...

Nearly done with the Cadians! For those of you who are IG fans, there's a local gaming group (Berks-PA Gaming Club) who's made a CAD sticker to put on the back of your car - they'll have these, along with other stickers, at MechaniCon this weekend. Get 'em while they're hot; I'm personally going for the bumper sticker that says "rear armor 10". Anyway, I'm now over half-way done with the last wash. Pics below are of twins - one on left is after wash, one on right is before. Not a huge difference, but a subtle one. Hope you all like them. Expect that later today I'll be able to post a pic of the entire squad of them (all 38 - or 40, if you include the doubles with the lascannons), so stay tuned. Next will be my Wraithguard, who I've been DYING to get started on! Would love to have them completed by this weekend, but I'm not going to hold my breath - especially since I've got to work tomorrow & will be gaming tomorrow night. Ah well.
Have read a little bit about what's supposed to be coming up with the next Eldar Codex due next year - supposedly GW will be either making SG bits or SG minis. I'll probably be one of the first in line to get these. Am also looking into getting Fantasy elf bits so that I can make a formal Farseer & Warlock retinue for a Seer Council on Jetbikes. Any suggestions as to what to use would be greatly appreciated, especially since I haven't done any conversions before. Enjoy the rest of your week, and happy painting!
