Well, my shipping notice from GWOZ just arrived. I guess I'll be going to post office next Monday. You really have to love GW's release methodology - shipping new release products so they don't arrive until after they're released, and doing so in a way that ensure you won't get to build/paint/play with them over the weekend. Such a customer friendly approach, you can almost hear the cheery informational video: "We here at Games Workshop are so afraid of the idea that our loyal customers might get our fantastic new products even a day before they are released in stores that we always ensure that they ship late on Friday afternoons. As a dedicated fan of the Games Workshop Hobby and an avid player of our exciting and cinematic games, you might wonder why we can't have it arrive on Friday, allowing you to enjoy your newest Citadel Miniatures over the space of the weekend. The answer is simple really - if someone gets something first, they'll go and talk about it on that interweb thing all the kids are using these days. When someone reads about something on the interweb there's a good chance that they may not buy it, and that's why products must be first revealed to our loyal customers only in situations that force them to impulse buy. We also have it on good authority that the interweb is the tool of Satan himself, so you'll just have to wait until Monday to get your fantastic new Citadel products!"

I assume the Bunker steps are optional for full modularity. Plus I would prefer Imperial terrain to held up by the bones of Xenos dead!

Yea its pretty unfortunate. To make matters worse here in the US they use a crummy shipping service. I didn't end up getting my DV box until 10 days after it released. I was pretty bummed about it. I just go pick up the new stuff at my LGS now.

Unless it's a limited item that I really want (like the 40k special edition Marine), I never advance order it. There really is no point. You won't get it any sooner and will most likely get it up to a week later.

I'll probably buy the separate kits just to see if I will paint them.
Easier on my budget than spending it all at once.

Given the difference in cost (US$160 for the full set vs US$216 for buying the pieces individually) I don't know how you can say that.

I don't need 160-216 dollars worth of trenchline right now.
I can use 30-60 dollars worth of trenchline and a hundred dollars of
warmachine stuff.
It's more convenient and easier on my budget to buy in parts than
spending 160 dollars now and trying to wait to spend the money I
need on other stuff.
I almost never buy stuff in bulk to save on the purchases just for the
sake of the bulk purchasing. I find that you end up sitting on a lot of
product and use money you could have used on other things.
It's like the difference between paying for a car in full and making
installments. Sure you save money on interest paying in full. However,
you also lose access to a lot of cash that way.

That's a terrible analogy. It's not really like that at all.
If you pay for a car in instalments you don't get the car in instalments. You get the whole car then and there.

Right. It's an analogy.
And it works for me because I won't need that trenchline all at once any time soon.
It's the perfect thing for 40k and I don't play 40k.
So I only need access to a small amount at a time so I can work on it,
which means I don't need to spend money all in one go. I have money
available for things that I will use now.

Stubborn Temple Guard
|
The trenchline is a neat concept and one I would like to purchase.
But the dead Guardsmen at the base are a HUGE turnoff for me. I want a trenchline I can use for multiple systems and multiple scales, and I feel the work needed to remove the dead Guard make the set worthless to me.
Also, why would the Guardsmen be OUT of the trench? Shouldn't it be piles of Tyranids or Orks at the base of it?

I wondered that as well. What were the Guardsmen doing outside of the defensive line?

The guard are out of the trench because an officer or commisar said charge (despite being under the enemies guns).
Plenty of rapid fire and/or overwatch
Nobody got much beyond the trench line, very WWI, very 40K

The guardsmen are outside the trenchline because they want to be 2 inches apart from each other so they won't be susceptible to templates?

Or they are the defenders your Eldar dumped after they took the wall etc.

Ok, so my defensive lines arrived today. Let me tell you what y'all be getting when you buy single boxes.
Imperial Bunker:
It's one sprue. No joke. It's one sprue. That's it. It's a very expensive single sprue.
I'm not 100% certain how it attaches snugly to the main defensive lines because they appear to have connecting teeth whereas the bunker just has flat sides.
The bunker is not - I say again not - modular. You cannot put the small annex on either side. It's always on the right side (if you're facing the bunker). This is a real downer for me. I was hoping you could have it on either side. No such luck.
Imperial Defensive Emplacement:
Also 1 sprue. Exactly as it appears on the tin. The separate pieces are those front bits with the firing slits, so you can mix 'em up if you have multiples.
Imperial Defensive Line:
Again, 1 sprue, but you get two of 'em. I like these ones the most. Wide, lots of detail, and with the extra ends you get a lot to play with. Everything slots in with little teeth along the bottom.
Overall impressions:
The bunker is weak sauce. The Emplacement is nifty and goes well with the Defensive Line. The Defensive Line is great.
A note about the dead Cadians:
Gettin' them off ain't gonna be easy. They're essentially moulded as part of the whole piece, as aside from the detail flourishes the Defensive Lines are one big piece, and it's almost kinda vacuformed in there (I don't want to say vacuformed though as I don't think it is).
Overall - 8/10 (loses 2 points for lack of modular bunker)

I'd hoped the cadians would be backed by enough material to cut em off. Guess we'll have to fiddle with plastic card and greenstuff now.

How hard do you think it would be to either...
A) revove the cadians so that they were somewhat salvageable for future endeavours.
B) fill them in with greenstuff and turn em into sandbags.

But you still gave this an 8/10?
Seems odd that they couldn't have made the bunker modular, it doesn't look like it would have been that difficult since the piece with the door on it is almost symmetrical. The useless box on the other end surely could have been made into another piece you could put on either side (or leave off entirely)?

Gravel is an idea I've been toying with, but the cadians reach up rather high along the wall, not sure you can make it look natural.

My plan is to first use a Dremel to grind away the bulk of the Cadians, then use some Apoxie Sculpt to form rock formations in those areas. I've had a little practice with this (key technique is using some real rocks to press the right textures into the putty) and I think it's doable. Of course, I'm only looking at picking up one kit. It'd be some work to do that to a whole table's worth.
I gave up on trying to figure out GW's reasons for designing kits with this kind of stuff.

This is Imperial terrain for an active battlefield, and casualties around trench systems are quite fitting. Look at pics from WW1 and you will see that it is realistic to have dead bodies lying around during a fight, so I can't understand people being upset about it in this case.

I'd be loathe to make that kind of effort, and you could argue you may as well make your own using some Aegis defence lines and plasticard or something if you are going to that length! Is there no possibility something like this won't be released in the future, minus cadians?

Not sure if serious...
TO paraphrase a certain someone, the problem is that the dead Cadians will be present at every single battle all over the place all the time.
It would have been easier to have just left them off and either left the space blank, or maybe use sandbags or, that old standby, skulls.
It would have sold more too.
But then, as this is 'limited', I guess they don't care?
