Well, it's like this. I can't afford these super heavies, my parents won't take kindly to me buying a £60 baneblade (98.60$). And also, my mum doesnt understand that, once you buy a squad, and paint it up, you aren't going to pay much attention to it, as its done. She often says "No, you can't get any more, because you bought those others and what happened to them?" i try to explain that, to expand my army, i need to buy more, but she doesn't have it.

Anyways, rant over, i want to get a few tips on how to still afford to play this hobby when i finally leave home and have financial freedom, without a strict mother

Buy from ebay/second hand models. You'll save a TON.

Yeah, do you have a job? And I'm assuming since you live with your parents that you don't have any bills to pay. So, your entire paycheck could go towards 40k!

Sad truth: once you're out of school, you'll end up with more money than time. I can afford all the models I want; I just don't have the time to paint all of the models I want, much less play as many games as I want.

Don't get a GF or a wife. I made this mistake and because of it I have no money for 40k. Well, that's a lie, I have some money, but nowhere near enough to buy what I want (sighs while looking at the heirophant model in the apoc book).

Exactly, I'm at the point that,if I wanted to,I could buy a new ARMY every other month, but I'd never ever get them painted or get a chance to game with them.

Well, I live in America, and as a part of the poor populace here with 0 disposable income, I have learned a few good tricks...

Trade you bits for other bits

"hmmm, i have 6 sets of legs, 13 sets of arms, and over 30 guns... want to trade some chests and heads for my guns and arms?"

Play at tournaments.
(this one is skewed, I regularly win best painted and occasionally win the best general/best sportsman)
in any case a $10 entry fee might score you $100 worth of lewt, and your mom might be more willing to let you go with a $10 event entry fee.

Look for good base models to make conversions.
that guy selling a lot of 50 chaos marines for $30 might not catch your eye, but its pretty easy to un-chaosify models if you got some spare bits.

THE HORUS HERESY: Emprah: Hours, go reconquer the galaxy so there can be a new golden age. Horus: But I should be Emprah, bawwwwww! Emprah: Magnus, stop it with the sorcery. Magnus: But I know what's best, bawwwwww! Emprah: Horus, tell Russ to bring Magnus to me because I said so. Horus: Emprah wants you to kill Magnus because he said so. Russ: Fine. Emprah's always right. Plus Ole Red has already been denounced as a traitor and I never liked him anyway. Russ: You're about to die, cyclops! Magnus: O noes! Tzeentch, I choose you! Bawwwww! Russ: Ah well. Now to go kill Horus. Russ: Rowboat, how have you not been doing anything? Guilliman: . . . I've been writing a book. Russ: Sigh. Let's go. Guilliman: And I fought the Word Bearers! Horus: Oh shi--Spess Puppies a'comin? Abbadon: And the Ultramarines, sir. Horus: Who? Anyway, this looks bad. *enter Sanguinis* What are you doing here? Come to join me? Sanguinius: *throws self on Horus's power claws* Alas, I am undone! When you play Castlevania, remember me! *enter Emprah* Emprah: Horus! So my favorite son killed my favorite daughter! Horus: What about the Lion? Emprah: Never liked her. Horus: No one does. Now prepare to die! *mortally wounds Emprah*Emprah: Au contraire, you dick. *kills Horus* Dorn: Okay, now I just plug this into this and . . . okay, it works! Emprah? Hellooooo? Jonson: I did nothing! Guilliman: I did more nothing that you! Jonson: Nuh-uh. I was the most worthless! Guilliman: Have you read my book? Dorn: No one likes that book. Khan: C'mon guys. It's not that bad. Dorn: I guess not. Russ: You all suck. Ima go bring the Emprah back to life.

my greatest aid to wargaming this year has been that my regular opponents (read equally nerdy flatmates) allow the liberal and often heinous use of proxies

I mean, sure, the staff have that failed med school vibe you usually see in horror movies and 90% of the people donating look like they belong on an episode of Cops or a dangers of Methamphetamines poster, but you get to lay on a couch and watch a movie for an hour and then get $30 dollars or better.

Why, i wouldn't have half the cygnar army I do if it wasn't for letting strangers in a funny smelling building stab me in the arm with needles to drain my vital fluids

I'm in favour of the real job suggestion, but stay away from haircuts. One mistake by the barber and you're shooting blood across the room.

Not to mention, each time you skip a haircut, you can buy a new unit with the money you save.

1. By not paying full retail.
2. By not buying GW tools/glues/flocks
3. By waiting.
4. By buying 2nd hand older models and stripping the paint off them (not everyone MUST have the latest model.) Can save a packet this way.

You know, there are online retailers that offer discounts, free worldwide shipping, and excellent customer support. And they don't just sell GW products. They also stock things like Warmachine, Flames of War, Hordes, etc. I've saved a lot of money by getting my more expensive stuff from such online stores.

However, I do still buy cheaper box sets, blisters, and codecies at my FLGS.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

When you live at home you have the disadvantage of being dependent on your parents. When you don't live at home, you're not anymore, therefore you can do anything you want.

Sucks that your parents don't let you reasonably build up a force, dude. I'd talk to them without a whiny tone (not saying you have one), as to why you would like a second squad of space marines.

As for how I don't get poor? I don't buy every new thing that comes out. I build my forces up with the monthly budget for wargaming that I've allotted. I don't play video games anymore, I don't upgrade my computer every month, and I take the bus. This, food, rent, and spendable cash for a night on the town is where my money goes for the most part.

I have to reiterate the point to buy secondhand. I was at the flea market at Historicon last week, and I managed to score a ridiculous amount of deals. For instance - I got the old Ork Spearhead for $70. It cost $170 when it came out. I then managed to sell back some of the models I didn't want from the box and recoup half the cost.

If this isn't an option, take the eBay approach. Get badly painted and damaged models for cheap, strip them and fix them up, then get them on the battlefield. Online retailers like the aforementioned maelstromgames and warstore can also give you a good 20% off.

Also, as an overall tip: Be patient. Don't splurge and buy a 2000 point army all in one sitting. Buy a squad every so often, take your time to assemble and paint them, then move on to the next. This way you can get an army done steadily, and without taking such an immediate hit on your wallet.

In fairness, though, your sexual encounters will feature daemonettes far, far less this way.

The first trick to playing this game cheap is never, ever buy at Games Workshop prices. There are far cheaper deals...E-Bay, various sponsored websites and, of course, dakka's own Swap Shop being good ways to get stuff cheap.

PATIENTS is my key to this hobby, ive only been warhammering for like 3 years and only got 1 full army *old thousand sons fell apart and need resurecting with clippers and glue* and my guard army will take a bit because of cash umm yea jobs the best go but then again you could just be a bday xmas spender like what i do when starting a new army and ditch the superheavy, i remember when the baneblade first came out everyone at GW had one, i didnt because i didnt see the point but even little kids had one and i saw countless unloved, thick paintjobs on some and others not assembled properly. EBAY is the place for superheavys trust me

Play Orks, and use pound-shop vehicles as the base for your conversions!
I have several tractors as buggies and a couple of old Airfix models as Wagons. Painted up red, with some dags and glyphs, mo' dakka and a few grots hanging off, they look the part!

Scenery can be scratch-built out of literally anything!
Polystyrene or cardboard packing is always a good start.

Baneblades and Stompas are expensive, and only get to be used in Apocalypse, where you need another £5,432,987 worth of figures to go with them! Stick with 1500pt battles

Do your mates allow proxy/counts-as/coke-can-drop-pods?
I have a squad of ork boyz with a boss that look a bit different from my other squads, and have big gunz - they are alternately Stormboyz, Kommandos, Burnas, Tankbustas, Extra Lootas (only have a few lootas) and shoota boyz.
My killa kanz are scratch-built from kinder eggs (The plastic bit, not the chocolate! )

If you really want to sell your soul, McDonalds usually has some part-time jobs going ... :(

Hope this helps.

I refuse to enter a battle of wits with an unarmed opponent.
