thats what we call in the business an answer to an earlier post...;P
the molds look really good...the minor issues with the miscasts i think could be solevd with aplying detals later on? so a more simpler mold would solve this i guess...or am i in the wrong here? casting is a riddle still for me? would another casting substance...resin for instance work out differently?
by the way... the plain pieces would be the ones that for me i would probably be the most interesting to me anyway... you can only have so many hatches and gutters on a certain area...

I was wondering if maybe resin would be a better option to cast the more intricate detail ?
Other wise they have come out well, is the missing detail all air bubbles or is some of it down to parts getting stuck in the mould , if thats the case maybe some kind of realising agent might help
Any chance slapping some paint on a couple to see how they paint up

It's possible, Resin and Dentalstone/gypsum products behave differently. also using a surfactant (such as "wet water" from hirst arts) as a flow aid might help as well.

I thought that a realising agent might help with the de moulding but was not sure as it being plaster (only worked with resin) but great job on those moulds they are tops

"wet water" is just water + "jet dry". (to break surface tension and allow the gypsum particles to flow better.)

Have you any experience making moulds from resin model pieces? Is it the same?

Dave, the panels look great. How many more square inches do you need to do, though? I think you have a large need for dental stone, hehe.......
Making a mold from a resin pieces would require a serious release agent. I wouldn't trust anything that wasn't made specifically for the purpose because if it goes wrong not only would the mold be bad but the piece in it would be ruined when you had to chisel it out......

Thanks guys! -The issue with the vent not casting properly is only my fault, it is in the fault of the design. It is a lesson that I will learn when I make the next set of masters. It's all about gravity and viscosity when pouring the permastone. My vent design actually encourages air bubbles in those recesses, and prevents the liquid plaster from filling the void. I may try some off-the-shelf casting resin soon, I'm sure it will be much stronger in those thin areas, but I'm afraid the way I designed the vent will still prevent the resin from filling those voids properly. Unless I have some sort of centrifuge to force casting material into all the nether-regions, the vent will unfortunately act the same.

The tiles are looking good not to bad at all miner faults but it is all a learning curve, I don't know if it would help but when I did some resin casting i used to use a small hammer just to tap the side of the mould a few times after pouring in the resin.
This is not perfect by all means but released a lot of the air bubbles reducing the amount of holes in the cast, some people make small vibrating tables to agitate the bubbles to the surface might work with plaster but not sure.
Any chance of some paint on them to give us more of an idea of finished look

These would only be for personal use.
Before the extreme right and extreme left folks start sounding off, understand the following.
Making copies of someone else's models is counterfeiting and under US law it is illegal even if you only intend to use them for personal use. Some feel this is morally wrong and some don't.
Also in the US we have just had a scare with the SOPA and PIPA bills which fortunately did not pass "yet" with those bills hanging out in the house/senate consider how they interact with this scenario. Dakka is a website that GW or the IP owner of other resin models could force a shut down of without the standard kind of due process we are used to having here in the US. So many people running websites and forums have been extra jumpy when IP violations get mentioned.
That having been said check out my blog, there are a couple of mold making and casting tutorials. Feel free to contact me if you need advice.

Hey, Dave, for resin casting where bubbles is a problem what you could do is get an old toy that has a rumble motor and build it into a small Plasti-card box with a battery pack and switch. When you are filling the mold you place this box under your mold and turn it on for the vibration effect..... I intend to build on when I finally get funding approval for serious resin casting from the household commander.....
