For those of you that are interested and are as big a Stargate fanboy as I am, today/tomorrow (depending on timezones) is the start of the new Stargate series, Stargate Universe. See who the (huge) list of new characters are here.

I'm approaching the show with a well balanced level of cautious optimism and OMGWTFBBQ-fanboy-ish-ness.

Hmmm.... i always liked the concept of stargate ( egyptian armor thingy )

however one thing bothered me on the series , is they seem to turn lazy on the costumes , and the only thing that made the aliens "alien" was the warped voices they do.
and the occasional eye flashing.

There are no humanoid/make up aliens in this show. There are no alien cultures that happen to speak perfect english in this show.

They've actually made a point of making the alien spiecies ALIEN species.

Well, it is. Richard Dean Anderson was in SG-1 for 8 years, and showed up in about 10 episodes during the last two years of SG-1 and in Atlantis.

But, as I said, they're going out of their way to make the new SGU different to the last series, and not just another Atlantis.

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

Anderson was the best thing about SG1. Seasons 9 and 10 were terrible (10 slightly less so than 9) without him.

I had not heard about this new show... I may have to internet it up when I get home and see if I can watch it (*shakes fist at Americans getting everything first*).

I have to admit I did not watch much Atlantis, so I am hoping to be pleasently surprised with this new series. And it will be great if they really do alien aliens for a change.

Let's just hope they get the CGI right, as that can really bug me in TV shows and movies.

well, scifi...sorry, syfy or howeverthey changed it, seems to have a decent track record on special effects for shows....its their movies that get the happy 1990's special effects

Which is why most people avoid Sci-Fi Originals.

I have a love-hate relationship with a lot of Stargate. So much of it is gold, but there are parts that just make you cringe.

I personally disagree about Season 9 and 10 being terrible, mostly because I liked the new characters and was happy to have a different plotline (and they ended all the original plotlines in Season 8). What I cannot stand is Season 7 of SG-1... wow was that bad.

As for Atlantis, it never got better than its first Season. Season 1 was the best, Season 2 was the logical extension of Season 1, Season 3 was pretty cool, Season 4 was mostly flat and Season 5 was ok, but with a few real duds (including that super-rushed-needed-to-be-a-2-parter Series Finale that actually had a Dues Ex Machina within a Deus Ex Machina... it was bad).

But this show says that it's different. All the reviews I've said have basically said "This is a different Stargate" - darker, more realistic, less slapstick - but without going off the gritty angsty deep end like nuBattlestar did (not that I don't like nBSG - I do - it was just really depressing in parts, like a live-action anime).

So I'm looking forward to it.

Also, Clone Wars Season 2 starts this week as well, if anyone cares about that show. That's a weird show as well - it's a kids cartoon, yet people die all the time. They haven't figured out yet if they're a kiddy show or a young-adult show, so they vacillate between the two with an often audible 'clunk'. Clumsy, but when it's good, it's really good.

Is this the one with Robert Carlyle in it?
I used to be a big SG1 fan, but I stopped watching at the end of the season where Anubis was defeated over the arctic by flying gold fish things after an ace battle between Anubis's and the human fleet. It wasn't that I didn't like the series that followed, but I've never had Sky TV so had to put up with the erratic show times on UK terrestrial television for series 10 onwards and Atlantis. In the end I was missing more episodes then I was watching so I lost interest. I still think that Anubis was the best villian in Stargate.

The world needs wannabes.

To be fair about the SciFi original movies:

They've always been intended as being campy in the style of Ed Wood movies.

It's just sometimes the actors take it too seriously and ruin all the wacky fun!

But yeah.
Stargate: Universe was quite neat. Looking forward to next week's episode. Still unsure why the Lucian Alliance decided to be dicks...

for some reason, i'm glad the senator character only lasted that first episode. i'm still undecided on where the daughter is going to be one of those really irritating characters that they keep around because she's attractive

I enjoyed it. It was a bit slow, but every review I've said says that it picks up in Air III. I like the characters, it seems that we've established our stable of secondary characters early (which is good - you can't have endlessly new people showing up in a show like this), and the music was really cool. So, looking forward to next week.

Probably because they are dicks.

So Eli got to be part of the team because He beat a video game? That sets a dangerous precedent. There are already people who take video games waaay too seriously. Now every time some 13 year old logs on to DDO, they're gonna expect to be beamed up to Ebberon?

I liked the original movie.
The series (including atlantis) not so much. I guess if I ever get a chance to get it all on DVD Id go for it and watch the whole damn thing. Maybe that would change my opinion, who knows.

The preview for universe however, caught my attention

Would love to, except that the internet here right now sucks -_-

But I shall see it.......I have my sources ^^

But I am glad it is receiving good reviews so far, now I think the wait will be worth it

Congratulations, your dismissive and conclusory commentary has provided nothing to this discussion or the wider community on whose behalf you arrogantly presume to speak nor does it engage in any meaningful way the remark it lamely targets. But you did manage to gain experience points toward your next level of internet tough guy.

I love Stargate.

But I do feel sorry for the Aliens in Universe. I mean, Big Bad Begbie is in their Pub, starting a fight.

You don't mess with Begbie.

I assume that you've never seen Last Starfighter, then, because that bit was pretty much ripped directly from it.
