Subject: Space Wolves WIP Blog - 10,000 points of wolfy madness - Updated 29/06 with full painted army -page2
|

Crazed Spirit of the Defiler

I've started my Space Wolves Army - all 10,000 points of it.
Ive started off with 7 boxes of Wolf Guard, as well as a squad of normal Terminators, and another 15 bitz ordered torsos, legs and shoulderpads to use all the extra arms.
My HQ's - Wolf Priest with minor conversions
Librarian - a bit more work to be done in libraianing him up.
Wolf Lord w/Twin Claws - he looks rather mean.
Wolf Lord w/Thunder Hammer and Storm Shield - sorry for the side on shot - but he looks cool.
Here is the first two painted Grey Hunters - these are resprays from an ebay win to test the scheme - working off of a white basecoat. I think I might go for a darker scheme with a black undercoat - but thats why we have test models, right?
Mold line issues are noted - im working on removing all from any i have done, and will attempt to do so on the ones bought already completed.
120 Marines to come.
Some of the troops are Ebay wins, so are at a lesser standard, but at such a cheap price, it didn't matter too much.
Edit 1 - Changed Librarian picture to make it clearer (old one wasn't showing properly in some browsers, for some strange reason). Also added some additional info. I'll try and keep pictures in this post for now.

More added - first painted squad of Grey Hunters - these are just resprays from Ebay, so they are not the best quality to begin with, but as a testing regime, its not so bad. If anyone has any quick tips for improvement (as opposed to 30 stage processes involving using the cycle of the moons gravitational pull to maximize brush stroke effectiveness) let me know. These have just been sprayed white, hit with 60/60 Shadow and Space Wolf Grey twice, washed with Asurman Blue and then rehighlighted/drybrushed with pure SW Grey. The shoulder pads are such an assortment, I've just painted right over the symbols for the most part - I may throw a wash and highlight in to bring them into relief. [edit] Having tried further to enjoy painting this scheme, I have failed. I think I will go with a cross between a shadow grey and a foundation grey in color. I have moved all of the TH/ SS images from shown here to only in the gallery. Otherwise this project log will take up 50 pages. Will have them all up soon! Now some blurry shots of part of the force - more to come .;

Cool, now paint, by Russ, Paint.
Anyway, my only critism. The 1st pic of the wolf priest I think. The wolf head on the shoulder pad is floating. Minor but...

Yep - should be 60 Terminators in total by the time I'm done - enough to make up for my total lack of superheavies. Well, maybe. I fight against HBMC a fair bit, and he has a LOT of stuff - so taking counters is quite necessary!

Now I've been very, very slack with updates, all I can say is that my rolling vs work has been very, very poor, especially with family and wife modifiers thrown in.
However, we have updates!
The first is some of my Wolf Guard with Storm Bolters. I want 10 of these at least, as for 21 points they make a nice firebase against horde armies. Note the one on the right has the axe from the Chaos Warrior box - its a very cool, if difficult to transport model.
Next we have 2 Wolf Guard with Power/Frost weapons, the one on the right again with the sword from the Chaos Warrior box. Lots of fun.
Next is 3 of the double handed axe characters - I love these guys. The one on the right with the Berzerker legs is one of the most dynamic models I own. Not saying much, I know, but still, I like it.
Next we have a unit with Frost Weapons - again, I've used Berzerker legs to give some feeling of movement to the unit.
Closeup of 3 models - I like the one with the Storm Shield the most.
These three are my Wolf Claw models - I like the top one the most. But they are all fun. I may create a power armored Wolf Lord like these guys.
And my recently done Scout Units. I like the commander the best, but I think that overall the unit is going to be lots of fun. I'm pushing for 10 of these guys, made out of scout snipers and some IG sniper weapons. If anyone has either of these for sale, send me a PM as well
I'll have more up tonight - including what I hope to be an army shot of what I've got built. I'm guessing around 8000 points including the 80 termies.

Death Gear wrote:What do you do for a living to pay for all this stuff if you don't mind me asking I work in IT. Though it doesn't pay the most. But I've learnt 2 things while Ive been collecting. #1 - Never, ever, ever pay retail in Australia. Ever. Malestrom's discount, as well as the strength of the $AU against the British Pound, now means that a Battleforce which costs $150 in my local GW costs me $77.50 from Maelstrom. That is $2.50 off of the 50% discount gained by working at GW, and far far larger than any distributors discount. #2 - Ebay and bitz are your friends with the Space Wolves kit. Honestly, so much is inexpensive to acquire. I bought 7 Wolf Guard boxes to begin with, as well a unit of regular SM Termies. I ended up with so many excess weapons, I'm only just running out now after creating 80. And the weapons are the most expensive part to buy on ebay - so I've only needed to buy torsos, legs and shoulders. Same with regular marines - Torso, legs, shoulders and backpacks are all that is needed, and its cheap to bitz order them - Hoard O Bitz was selling 8 zerker legs for $2, and torsos for about the same. Sorry, I wasn't sure if you were talking about how lame my army was.
And yes, I am very worried about painting all of this.
Very worried. I think I might find someone to at least help me airbrush the base coat, as otherwise I'll be here forever.

10,000 points didn't sound too impressive to me at first [I'm rocking 15000 Emperor's Children, and man I feel your pain in painting it all].
Then I saw that it's all infantry. Yikes! 10k seems like a lot less when you have 500 point tanks and 1000 point titans in your head. Have fun with all that!

You're not really getting some tanks? Wow!
Well it's really a force to reckon with, come to think about the 60 termies, lots of snipers and the long range long fangs! Yey!
And the enemy still has to cover the impressive HQ's of SW, some really nasty wolfy goodness there!

I have 3 Land Raiders, a Vindicator, 2 Drop Pods and a couple of Razorbacks planned. However, I'm going for 10k worth of infantry, yes.

Well, I'm going to have a few tanks, but that would mainly be for tournament play with LR's and Razorbacks. I want the strength to be infantry, and if I get enough shooting together, I'm going to invalidate a large amount of enemy AT firepower (such as lascannons, melta weaponry, railguns etc) and force them to come to me, or at least be able to advance in force. Now all I need are some wolves for screens.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Ok - Here is an army shot I put together from tonight. I have about 40 marines and 15 termies to build after this. Then its paint paint paint! If anyone has any ideas/schemes for a darker kind of space wolves (not shadow grey, but dark grey or dark blue/grey would be cool) then please let me know!
So here we are.
There are more in the gallery as well.
For comparison, here are 4 shots of half of my Chaos Army
I should also have some pictures up later of some of the better models/units in the army.

I wish you luck for painting the whole stuff. An airbursh basecoat + 2 different colors/model should be fast enough that you can enjoy them before 2012, and be able to finalize the painting when it suits you.

Yup.
Well, I think I'm planning to paint in 1500 point sections - build an army list using what I have, paint it up to a good standard, use it. Rinse and repeat. More manageable.
But you are so right about the airbrush. Now if only I had one and knew how to use it.

I'm giving all of the Terminators custom bases, like they are fighting on a ship or in an industrial city. Basically I've made them from spare vehicle parts, Cities of Death terrain, and sprue bits. The power armored Wolves themselves I'm thinking of giving rubble bases as well - stone and metal with alien parts hanging off, and a toxic green washed over with PVA into the gaps to bring a toxic green glow. While snow effects are sort of nice, they are a biatch to transport properly. Especially when Terminators don't really fit properly in any GW transport system.

And especially not when you store them the way you do, Stu.
Don't make the bases too busy. A base should never be better or more eye-catching than the model that's standing on it.
