Hey guys!

Im starting a 40k army and have narrowed it down to Tyranids and Chaos Space Marines (more specifically Word Bearers).

Im really torn between the two and am interested in what you guys think I should do.

I like the Tyranids because the model range is fairly new, they're competative, a new codex is coming out and they're highly versatile. The only things im down upon is they dont really have any fluff/background story I can work on plus just looking at the models I dont think im going to paint them very well. (I suck at monsterous creatures)

I hate Space Marines, so what better way than to kill them than with their own traitorous kind? Looking through the different legions im definantely keen on the Word Bearers. The models look absolutely amazing, theres plenty of oppotunity for customisation, they look fun to paint and game with. Only thing im unsure about is if building a Word Bearers army will be expensive.

Thanks

Ahhh nids will have new dex soon and will probably be pretty competitive with it and has decent models. Not much else going for them though. Where as with word bearers you have alot of modeling potential, story, competitive, easy converting, and tanks. You could guess what i picked.

Oh BTW CSM are no more expensive to build up than nids.

CSM! I played nids for about 6 months (my first army) and pitched em... Course, wait for their new dex and see. Nids were just far too shooty for a damn army full of hulking monstrosities with claws!

Ok guys thanks for that, I now know a bit more about each army although I would like someone to answer this.

"Are there any special units or units I shouldnt field as a Word Bearers army"?

Like some legions have noise marines, raptors etc......

Too shooty?
My main opponent is a 100% CC Tyranid army and it basically rips apart my SM army each game.

i would vote for nids myself, with the new dex and variation of models it is a great army.

You may use anything I post, just remember to give me credit if used somewhere else.

To be honest they are both weak in 5th but bugz are going to get a new codex and from what I have heard they will be crazy over the top. Nidz FTW

Word bearers love to use daemons. With that said you probably know that they are lesser daemons and arent as good as they were in the last codex but they do come with one advantage when using them they can assault the same turn they DS off an icon in. Also they would use berzerkers.

Word Bearers don't exist any more.

There are no Dark Apostles, you can't bring any God-specific Daemons, there are no in-game benefits from worshipping Chaos and your troops forget that they worship Chaos Undivided the moment the guy with the Icon dies. Like Alpha Legion, Night Lords and Iron Warriors, there is simply no way to play them in 40K as it stands other than a paint job.

On the other hand, Tyranids are about to get a new book, so go for them.

Damn I had no idea it was that bad. You helped make my mind up for my second army. Nids it is. To the OP go nids.

Uhh, what? I just read a topic where someone said CSM were "dry to play" and now here we have them being "weak in 5th". Yes, the codex is garbage with overall selection and the fluff is non-existent (as HBMC has pointed out), but dry to play and weak? No. Not even close.

-------------------

Anyways, on topic. I have both (well, CSM and Nids).

I personally would take CSM over Nids if I were to only choose ONE. Granted, there's a new codex coming out for Nids, but I doubt it will vary much from placing 100+ models on the table and rushing the enemy.

CSM can do everything from rushing forward to staying back and gunlining it up, depending on what you need. Nids are....run towards your enemy. Dont get me wrong, it can be fun, but more as an alternative option, not something you want to do every game. Theres very little thinking involved.

Modeling wise, both are great. CSM can be converted to fit a theme, have the best models in the game (imo) and have a wide range of creativity involved with them. Tyranids have giant monsters, which are awesome.

But I would go CSM first and nids as a backup army. Theres a lot more replay value with CSM.
---

EDIT: To be clear, if you already have a marine army, definitely go Nids. However, if you have guard, daemons or orks (maybe even eldar), go CSM.

Nids.

Xenos army with a brand new Codex trumps a MEQ army every time.
