Ok, I can't deny that a squat's shoulder is a good home for a RT lascannon And I'm certainly not one for insisting one model gets done before another This does however mean I expect to be impressed when you get back to the dread, and doubly impressed when I see whatever you come up with for that double-las

Finished shorties look good as expected, love the goggles on the las-maniac. On the guy flipping his visor(the one with the bent las ) did you add a wash to the gun, or is that due to the lighting?

oh yes - multiple washes on all metals, and it does seem to stand out on that particular gun - I think it looks good, makes the gun look slighty oily, like he has been polishing it with gun oil. His lasgun is a tiny bit out of wack isn't it. I suppose considering they've been posted in flimsy bubble envelopes it could be much worse

Yeah. looks good, I like it, just wasn't sure if it was down to some dodgy yellow house-lamp as it stood out particularly on the centre figures.

These models are cool, btw.

My question is about the older marines in the very first forum post. That green.... how did you make it? It looks lighter than straight-up dark angels green.

Ah well Nu11nVO1D thats some real dirt cheap painters acrylic called 'Anita's All Purpose Acrylic' and its No. 11047 dusty grey. I found it kicking about and though it was a great colour.
Its shaded with armour wash and then highlighted with more dusty grey. I think it would be difficult to get it that colour with citadel range. you would have to experiment. You need a green thats verging on being aquamarine and then just add a bit of very light grey.
It seems to work pretty well although its not quite as smooth as model paint should be

monkeytroll I cant rule out crappy light being involved in the color but I try and get it fairly right by photographing in daylight. But there is less and less of it at the mo.

the look really nice especially the sqaut with peg leg's helmet.
the metal looks i don't know mottled and old. the colour scheme of blue and green is different, i personally think that grass green colour is underused in the grimdark 40k unvierse in general. although i was expecting slanesh pinks and tezentch purples for your shorties, maybe thats for the chaos squats?, as usual i am astounded at the painting qaulity and originality in these blogs. and all that from under a duvet in a poorly lit flat ;-)

I think its best to save pink and purple for slaneesh - and maybe eldar (the 'kinky' races). I picture squats as being quite conservative in the use of color, they are like mechanics and miners and other macho engine grease covered sweaty occupations. but that certainly doesn't apply to chaos squats.

does anyone know of a good varnish spray to give these guys a protective coat?

Crap.. I've been searching for that green color for agggggeeessss. Curses... well, I'll experiment.

Another classic mini, another nice paint-job

On the spray varnish front, tbh I've not really come across any favourites, used a variety over the years and still do, never had any issues with the GW stuff except the price At the moment I'm using Humbrol Gloss and i-kore matt, but they just happen to be what I had in my spray box.

edit: Actually I've just noticed that the last batch didn't get very good coverage from the matt. And I've just broken one of them which isn't really down to i-kore I suppose, but I'll blame them anyway

fair enough - so what your saying is that it dont really matter. I like that! saves worry. I do worry of course as I saw major toms thread where his space hulk terminators got frosted and mottled when he spray varnished them. but I think that had more to do with ambient temperature and humidity than the brand of spray.

Anyone wanting beastmen with guns should check out this link - they are cheap and cheerful but they dont have any close combat weapon choices unfortunately. I'm going to buy some thats for sure http://www.em4miniatures.com/acatalog/Beastmen.html

I was very lazy today - only one mini painted in a day where I really wasn't doing anything else apart from watching films. But in my defense I was out clubbing in Newquay last night at the 'alternative beauty awards' which was great but my friends didn't win unfortunately. She did a great burlesque striptease but instead some skinny pale chick who wasn't all that great at singing won. Rigged I say!

Also saw an awsome black metal band called ABGOTT - they looked like some kinda evil undead goblins. thats what I call stage presence.

The bright neat colour schemes are really doing great justice to these old gems Weety. I check this blog whenever I want to see something colourful and entertaining

The old eavy metal guide you were linked previously is amazing. Perhaps one day with practice, we can all reach the levels of painting mastery required to actually get these expressions onto miniatures.

Well, it's probably worth bearing in mind that in the last few years I've actually got round to sealing very, very few minis. And note the edit to my previous I still worry slightly when it comes to sealing as I had a bad experience years ago, due almost soley to me, but still preys on my mind. Also bear in mind that some of the cheap'n'nasty arts&craft type varnishes can have slightly dodgy coverage..hmm, maybe you should just completely disregard my previous post and wait for some better informed opinions

Thanks Ifalna! I do try and get a bit of colour in! And I think a finer brush is needed before expressions can be had- just out of interest what kind of brush do you use? I get cheap ones from the local cash and carry but I'm buying an army-painter insane detail brush as the cheap ones seem to get bent over at the end after a little use.

Monkeytroll I will wait for more advice - perhaps I can find some suggestions in the tutorials section. I have never sealed anything ever - and as I dont play anymore its certainly not urgent.

I use pro arte size 0 to 10 zero, mostly as they hold point well and have really comfy handles. I also use winsor and newton Sceptre Gold II as they are a sable mix, but I want to move to full sable soon. Expensive, but they hold more paint and seem to not curve as easily :(

10 zero? What is that, 2 hairs? Don't think I've ever owned anything more than 0000, didn't even realise they went to 10

It pretty much is, except it doesn't bend the way trimming a brush to a few hairs usually would I rarely use it, I am afraid it will get ruined so I keep it for crazy detail work.

I will get a shot when I get home tonight, basically just an absolutely tiny kneedle point brush.

It looks like the one I'm buying is all sable and very very fine so hopefully it will be ideal. If not I will try another brand. Thanks for the recommendations - more likely to get a good one if someone else has tried it.

but perhaps your right and the best brush should be saved for the most detailed parts - I should probs get a less fine one too

Do they sell Testors Dullcote in England? It's the only matte spray that I use. I will occasionally use a gloss coat first for better protection. Then I'll spray over that with the dullcote. If something small needs to be shiny, I'll touch it up with a liquid gloss coat.

I should point out that most of my 40K IG figures aren't finished. I always want to add more details but I never seem to get around to finishing up all the things I wanted to add. It doesn't stop me from pushing them around a tabletop.

My fantasy Orc and Gobbo army is all spray coated because I was using them a lot and didn't want their paint to rub off. I still need to go back and add some liquid gloss coat on them though.

The secret to painting a really big army is to keep at it. You can't reach your destination if you never take any steps.

I build IG...lots and lots of IG.

The finishing issue is a problem for me. Because I dont play with the models I feel like I should go back to them and add extra highlights and details before I bother to varnish them.

What varnish to use seems to be a contentious issue on P&M forums. Dullcote gets a lot of good feedback but I will have to pay extra to have it posted from America.

Would be awesome if you can get some RT Techpriests...they are pretty rare!

Still looking good...you do seem to paint very quickly. Question. Do you do one coat or several? I just read something @ Ifalana on a different blog which was something like

'One coat of Elf flesh over black undercoat....'

Well that is pretty much what I am doing...what should I be doing?

@Ifalana...if you are reading this if you could you take a look over on my one...similar too Wheetys...but not quite as productive...and see if you can give any advice?

Sorry...went of on a tangent...

Btw...the beastman that looks most like mine is 3241a

That RT tech priest in the link, I have thrown big money at him and fingers crossed he is mine. I won a different RT-Tech priest yesterday and it cost me 6 squid. They are obviously a rare catch - so anyways soon I will have tech priests.

Manoknok - on the subject of painting - Especially skin bit often for other areas I do try and give several thinner coats. How i do it at the mo is I start with a white undercoated model and hit it with some slightly watered down black wash to give a grey tone and pick out the shadows. But you could just as well paint it black or grey. Then I just get a tiny bit of flesh color on the brush and spread a thin coat all over. You dont want to much paint on the brush so wipe a bit off and spread what you've got left as widely as poss. You will keep running out of paint on the brush and having to get more, wipe some off and so on so its a slightly tedious way to paint but thats the way I do it (it might help to water down the paint just slightly - but on the other hand you dont want it too watery or it will spread like a wash and you dont want that) then once that is done you add another layer, slightly thicker but ignoring shaded areas, then another coat on the more raised areas. Then wash (Im using browny yellow skin wash sometimes with a little red), then highlight just the bits like nose, chin, cheekbones and the front of the forehead
