Bad

Streamlined codexes,

Unbalanced Warhammer Fantasy Battle,

Generally S*** on their fans,

Good

Updated many, many Mini ranges (Vamps, Lizardmen, Orks, etc.) which now look MUCH better.

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

I'm primarily a 40k Imperial Guard player (started my second army, tau, a month ago though) so its been pretty good on this end.

Imperial Guard - Best codex they've made, best new vehicle (Valk), also love the new additions like the command squad box. Don't like the new IG battleforce though but at least the Sentinel is a nifty new model now.

Space Hulk - Couldn't resist the urge to buy it since the models are some of the best I've ever seen from GW and FW.

And that just about does it for me. Didn't much care for the other stuff like Space Wolves since I still have a bunch of Guardsmen and now Tau to paint.

Ah yes, this was the thing billed as being new and not something they'd done before and definately was not Space Hulk when asked.

Omadon's Realm

Space Wolves codex - kinda meh and oddly childish rules and a couple of real stinkers in the model range (space marine Mick Hucknell and the lightningclawed LOLcat rider, but some nice kits.

Imperial Guard - mostly meh and poor mini release schedule. Valk was nice tho.

Skaven - strong but inconsistent mini line revision, some of the nicest minis but should be an 'across the board' revision, like space orks.

Space hulk - some nice minis, stupidly overpriced, for a limited release they still had them in my local GW a month ago, also absolutely idiotic hyperbole release bullwank.

They took a long cold gak on their fanbase with C&D letters.

Raised prices twice in one year...in the middle of a global recession.

Continued to produce a very poor magazine.

Continued to fail to engage their playerbase.

Actually managed, via their attitude, not even their ludicrous pricing, just their attitude, to convince me they are not a company that deserves my custom.

I bought my last new minis from GW. I will doubtless pick things up second hand on ebay but the divorce between my wallet and GW's till is complete.

There were only a few GW Items I was excited about this year :

New Space Wolves

Planetstrike Terrain

Mystery Box (Space Hulk)

All had their pro's and con's and could have been better either in execution or in follow-up.

I won't even get started on the baffling "GW Business" aspect ...

Ultimately, GW allowed me to keep more of my money than in previous years.

What can I say, it was the year, I've stopped playing any kind of GW game (including Space Hulk) and I'm in the process of literally giving away my hordes of miniatures......I could list the reasons why, but the guys here have done an excellent job so far!

Luckily for me, I've already found a more rewarding and more creative hobby to throw my lifes earnings at, and still intend to dabble in Infinity the game.

I'm sure GW are losing untold hours of sleep over this as well!

Man down, Man down....

It hasn't been a good year at all IMO.

They didn't release one single thing that interested me this year.

The release schedule is mind-numbingly slow, and at this rate there's no way they'll update all the Codexes before 6th edition. I can already guess which ones are likely to get the short end of the stick.

Preferential treatment towards the Imperial armies is getting worse. Almost everything released this year was imperial.

Blood Bowl fans were basically stamped into the dirt and spat on (I don't play BB but can't help being outraged by GW being so heavy-handed with the C&D's and then this latest fiasco with the new PDF and their treatment of it's creators.)

White Dwarf went from weakness to weakness.

They outright lied about their 'mystery' release, and then released a hugely popular game on a limited basis *sigh*

One of their redshirts stopped me at the door earlier this year and asked what I wanted. I gingerly requested a chaos attack squad. Clearly this wasn't enough - he wanted clarification. "Do you mean a Chaos Space Marines Attack Squad?", he asked. Before i could say, sarcastically "No thanks, a Chaos Squat Attack Squad please," he was leading the way to the Chaos Marines shelves and pointing at each product in turn and telling me what each one was. "These guys are Khorne Beserkers, they're really good in Close Combat. And these guys can be equipped with a really cool gun called a Heavy Bolter." He then 'helpfully' pointed to the Heavy Bolter on the box. People like this are why I don't go into GW stores anymore. They're not all like this though. I also know a cool guy at my local store who is happy to chat to me like a mate. One time I told him I was looking for a new house, then a few months later I saw him again and he asked how the house hunting was going. So there are nice staff at GW too. But the 'ooh buy this' crowd are growing unfortunately.

All in all, I'm not impressed with GW at the moment. And given that I have a huge backlog of unpainted minis, very little money and no ideas for new projects, GW are unlikely to get my custom again for a long time unless they buck their ideas up AND release something new that I absolutely must have.

Stopped running Grand Tournies But are putting 100's of thousands of dollars into supporting over 70 Independent GT's, which will be run better than the 3 or 4 GW run GT's were, and culminating in an invatational tournament at the end of the seaon.

Stopped doing most of Games Days And are refocusing on making the one games day they are running much better, like they did years ago.

Raised prices on minis, twice Happens, some GW prices went up, so did everything else in the world. They also put out a large number of plastic kits, many of which are better and cheaper than the metal couterparts.

Threw out a rubbish version of BB rules Did an awesome job on Space Hulk.

Very Sad! Have a beer, play some games, you'll feel better.

Feel free to add on... Thanks, I will

I believe that real wages seem to have generally gone down, along with household net worth and net savings.

Anyway Howlingmoon, in the spirit of the season, if you wouldn't mind splitting them that would be sick.

Versteckt in den Schatten deines Geistes.

Early in the year, Games Workshop released a new Guard Codex in which they changed every single rule from the previous Codex and added a bunch of units that will never get model kits.

And a new nickname entered the Dakka lexicon - Arby.

Later on during the year they release a game expansion called Planetstrike - a game that conjures up grand imagery of protracted sieges, great offensives against enemy strong points, and last-ditch desperate defensive efforts.

Then GW promptly forgot about this expansion a month later.

Then they said that they were going to release something we'd never seen before, and made a big song and dance about the secret. They even went so far as to threaten staff with instant termination should they ever breathe the word Space Hulk, because it wasn't Space Hulk.

It was Space Hulk.

Then, towards the end of the year, Games Workshop gave us Space Marines riding Wolves.

I mean what the feth, people?

Add to this two price rises, C&D's to their loyal fanbase, and fething over every BB player around, and we're left with a very bad year for GW.

Fixed your typo.

And yeah, I pretty much agree, even though I think WotR is the best thing GW has done in years.

He's got a mind like a steel trap. By which I mean it can only hold one idea at a time;
it latches on to the first idea to come along, good or bad; and it takes strenuous effort with a crowbar to make it let go.

Stopped purchasing White Dwarf. 5th edition still sucks jingle balls and agree with HCBM on everything else. Sold all my fantasy armies but one because of Daemons sillyness. Sold all 40K armies but three and patiently waiting for 6th edition. Still actively playing WM/Hordes to get my war gaming fix.

Tied and gagged in the back of your car

GW's recent gaking on their fans has provided excuse for me to look further into other miniature ranges (to be perfectly honest, I'd been looking for a while, but these recent events have pretty much pushed be completely towards other companies). With the exception of a few models that I bought as the local LGS was liquidating its GW stock, this'll be a GW-free Xmas, and I may just continue on that way for a while, unless GW really does some fantastic. The constantly increasing prices and complete lack of testing or editing of their rules has been pushing me further and further away from their games.

I can't say I'm angry with them. They're a business, they want to turn the highest profit possible at the lowest cost. That's their prerogative. If they see their current practices as the optimal way to make money, so be it. But that also means that I'll be much less motivated to pick their product over that of a competitor.
