Hey there.
Okay, so, after talking about my army list, i've decided that I need more lootas. I ordered around 30 boyz and i'm gonna chop up 10 of them to be lootas.
Now, I don't have pictures yet, my camera is being finnicky but what should a loota have at the least to be considored one? Right now, I have them weilding guns with... well, more guns attached to them, and even then more. But they are kinda coming off to me as flash gitz (Which I don't want)
So, in short, the question is, what would be the most important defining features to customize a boy into a loota?
Pictures of what i 'have' done will be uploaded as soon as I can.
Thankyou.

The difference between flash gitz and lootas visually I've always thought is practicality vs show. Lootas have practical guns that they've modified from others. Flashgitz want their guns to LOOK the loudest. Oh and loota guns have to look like you can't attack CC with them well, flashgitz have to look assaulty.

Flash gits also have a nob profile, and lootas have a boy profile, so that can help distinguish them as well.

To me, the point of a loota is that the name - he (or a mek) has _looted_the gun from an enemy. Sure, it was probably broken, and now it's been 'improved' into a thoroughly unpredictable orky weapon that may not resemble the firepower of the original gun, but the original gun is still vaguely recognisable. You can see this on the GW models.
So long as a loota is clearly carrying some sort of orkified other race's heavy weapon, and there's no visual confusion with other orks with big shootas etc, then it's a good loota IMHO.

A good thing to do would be to talk to your friends and other people you play with and see if they have a bunch of extra heavy weapons. Mix a bunch of eldar, tau, marine, etc, weapons and add orky bitz to them. It would work fine. $22 for a box of 10 boyz, cheap weapons trades from friends, a trip to the chop shop and blam, Lootas.

I'm going to echo Clang's comments, the weapons should clearly be stolen from other races. This gives them a distinct visual appearance, different from a large number of clearly ork weapons cobbled together, a la Flashgitz.
Also, the Loota weapon is Heavy d3, and though I know the stock models harness doesn't do it for most people, adding some kind of bulk (power packs, large ammo sources, safety cages, etc) will help convey the "heavy" aspect.

Indeed, make them shoulder slung and HUGE, have them not able to be used in CC at all and maybe put some eye targeters over their eyes, also make the muzzles rather long and lots of ammo belts and stuff like that, just make them really big, that's the main thing....

The biggest difference between flash gitz and loota is informing your opponent which unit you are fielding
That being said, flash gitz are nobs wielding tricked out shootas. Or, perhaps, stolen weapons from other races that fit the same "battlefield niche" - in game terms, rapid fire and assault weapons.
Lootas, on the other hand, are just plain ol' boyz who wield huge cannons and laser weapons requiring that they drag a small nuclear reactor behind them. In game terms, this mostly translates into heavy weapons (indeed, the lootas weapon is the only weapon in the entire ork list to be a heavy weapon), though you could probably get away with any weapon that is sufficiently large enough.
I think, from a tabletop point of view, that using nob bodies v. using boy bodies is the way to go to differentiate between the two.

There is an attitude that not having an insanely optimized, one shot, six stage, omnidirectional, inevitable, mousetrap of an assassin list army somehow means that you have foolishly wasted your life building 500 points of pure, 24 karat, hand rolled, fine, cuban fail. That attitude has been shown, under laboratory conditions, to cause cancer of the fun gland.

Nasty Nob

I say just give 'em BIG FRIGGIN GUNZ and you're good. Hey, scratchbuild these or get bitz from another army. Whatever they looked like before, they probably have been Highly Kusomized once the Orks get their hands on them.
As for Flash Gitz, yes, they are bigger (Nob Size I expect due to their profile) so use Nobz for these and regular Orks for Lootas.
More advice - Lootas are pure gold, so make the full 15 if you can.

I agree - boyz (not Nobz) bodies and heavy (not assault with "extras") weapons. I fall in the "don't like the harness" camp - I think it makes da lootas look too uniform! When I eventually get around to some, I'm thinking a little like Guard heavy weapon teams - with stands (structural, grotz or convenient scenary - boulders, walls), kneeling, dragging guns behind, etc etc... Other armies heavy weapons, suitably Orkified, will also add to the variety. Perhaps some other army tank weapons
