So,

I'm guessing it goes;

SM (All flavours) > Orks > Imperial Guard > Chaos SM > Eldar > Tyranids > Necrons > Daemons > Dark Eldar > DH/WH

Anyone else want to rearrange it according to their experiences?

I think Chaos Marines are more popular than Guard or Orks, but apart from that, you're probably right.

Well
SM (All flavours) > Orks > Imperial Guard > Chaos SM > Eldar > Tyranids >DH/WH > Daemons > Necrons > Dark Eldar
this is how it should look. Necrons in my area have died.

That's because I play more than the sole eldar player.

Our area? Going purely by what I've seen in casual games and the occasional Apoc match:
Chaos space marines > chaos demons (about half the armies you see in casual games are one of these) > IG > Orks > WH (you know you're in a weird area when SoB armies are seem more often than SM) > Space Marines (all variants) > Dark Eldar > Tyrannids (this may go up soon, obviously) > Eldar > DH (do Inquisitorial allies count?) > Necron/Tau

I think our area is seriously messed up. Or at least the store I go to. Haven't checked out the local tournament scene but I suspect that is a bit more normalised.

The SoB army I saw last was painted gorgeously. I do like our statistics though, just enough Marines to keep people happy, not enough to annoy.

Based on the last store tourney I was in, there was (13-14 players) 2 orks, 1 daemon, 1 CSM, 1 tyranid, and the rest some flavor of space marine, mostly vanilla. No Guard, no Tau, no DE, no Necron, no Eldar. I was told there was usually one solid Eldar player in that group who couldn't make it, but otherwise, I imagine that's a pretty typical scenario. The Marine variants are the most popular, cheapest, idiot-proof option. The tourney circuit is probably different, showing more of the min/maxed power lists as opposed to the casual gamers, who make their decisions more off of fluff and what they can afford.

Surely the simplest way to know for sure is a poll?

But yeah, I'd rate it as Space Marines>Orks>CSM etc.

I would agree with everything up until tyranids (except Orks and IG would be switched here). After that the number of players are so low that theyre not even worth mentioning.

I'm still quietly astonished there are more SoB than SM players at my store.

Guard have gone up so much in popularity, I remember when I first started playing with the beginning of 4th edition and everyone hated the guard telling me how much they sucked and not to play them, now they are competitive and hated because they win now

Guard have never been a weak army, just an expensive one, so few people played them. Adequate-looking plastic Cadians changed all of that by making decent-looking Guard infantry cheap enough that people would buy them. 5th placing Ordnance in squadrons only enhanced their appeal.

But in 3rd, Guard were a very decent stand & shoot army; 4th saw very powerful Drop Guard, and 5th brought Mech Guard to the fore.

With enough models, anything is possible.

According to the Dakka Poll, which isn't unreasonable, by the way:

of course...
18% Space Marines

top non-MEQs...
12% Imperial Guard
12% Orks

*anti*-Marines...
9% Chaos Marines
8% Eldar
7% Tau
6% Tyranids (7%?)

minor forces...
5% Daemonhunters
4% Witch Hunters
4% Chaos Daemons
4% Necrons
3% Dark Eldar

Codex-less armies
2% Lost and the Damned
1% Kroot Mercs
1% Ad Mech
1% Squats
1% Genestealer Cult
1% other

All in all, it's pretty much as one might expect, tho Dakka having more serious players, you have more players with secondary, tertiary, and varied armies.

what JHDD said, however it may be worth pointing out that IG had more votes than Orks, Witch Hunters more than Daemons and Necrons (who were even!) and Tau had more than Tyranids (who were actually 6% JHDD)

So according to that its:

Space Marines>IG>Orks?Chaos>Eldar>Tau>Tyranids>Daemon Hunters etc.

@Dave: I ordered the above based on votes so IG > Oks, WH > Daemon / Necrons, Tau > Nids. <1% delta isn't something to worry over. They're still esentially the same, which is why I bulk categorized them as above.

The Nids are currently 6%, but I'm pretty sure they were 7% when I posted. I'll adjust it anyways.
