Im thinking tyranids. They send some spores down either kill the populace or turn them into genestelers. then the genestealers slowly but surly make there way up the polititcal ladder to where they can control the army and then be able to block then tyranids from being sensed.

-to many points to bother to count.

What do you mean when he dies? Hes been dead for a long time, the only thing that keeps the daemons out is faith in the emperor.

Eldar, who are also the least likely to want to do it.

They can get in via a back door, can concentrate a lot of might in one place and have the mobility.

Everone else would raise too many alarm bells on the way in.

Actually with that in mind, the Imperium can do it even better. Since they are a trusted source, they could get the tools in to tale it out without too much hastle.

According to the new fluff nids. They are heading for Terra and hive fleet Leviathan hasn't been stopped. it used to be that Tarsis Ultra was in the way of one tendril that was heading directly for Terra, but now it has moved slightly and there is a hive fleet on course for the Emperor (apparently it's the astronomican that's drawing them there).

Humans. They've nearly done so at least twice, and despite all precautions the Imperium still has enough rifts in various places to cause the needed tension. Oh, neither side would be attempting to destroy the planet; one side likely defending holy Terra, the other side rescuing it, or possibly both on the ground think the other is traitor. The problem is that humanity has a knack of destroy that which they're fighting over.

+1 I agree on this.

If Ork spores could get gain a footing (very very doubtful, however), then Orks would be a mighty contender. Once a WAAAGH starts, it'll be never ending war, ala Armageddon.
If not Orks, then definately Nids. All signs are point towards nids heading towards Terra, so they can om nom nom the Emperor.

didnt you know as soon as anyone trying to push the timeline forward a inch forces the high lords to press the reset button on the golden throne reversing it to a point so they can manipulate the events in there favour and leave it to a standstill (I mean how long ago was the eye of terror campaign ????)

Nids would invade terra and then the necrons would awaken to fight the nids because they are on their turf. This will result in a long drawn out fight over terra where nothing happens and is written out of the fluff next month.

Perhaps it's the Higurashi fan talking, but I really like this theory. It makes so much sense. Perhaps not a reset button, but the idea of the emperor enduring countless variations of doom, always trying again and again is somewhat appealing. It explains why the imperium is still standing.

Dark eldar also have the survival instincts to know that going through a portal that leads to one of the most heavily guarded rooms in the galaxy, with a full thousand Custodes, is considered a bad idea. Why would they do it? Killing the Emperor isn't going to benefit them, and why attempt to enslave the populous of Terra when there are lots of other planets without the same defences and standing armies.

Keeping the Emperor in stasis is likely to be to their advantage. During the crusades humanity was united enough that they could be a problem, now they're bogged down so much a hive can go missing and the slavers will be long gone before the Munitorum notices.

Well, if they ever got their gak together, the Orks could and would wipe the galaxy clean of, well, everything else. Long-standing fluff is that the Orks outnumber pretty much the whole rest of the galaxy put together, and given that every single Ork is quite an effective fighter, if anyone could unite the entire Ork race the Green Tide would smash the Imperium like a sledgehammer hitting a watermelon.

But the odds of that ever happening are about a squintillion to one.

Lolwut? The Emprah ain't dead. His brain has some form of activity though in a suspended state and his soul still powers the Astronomican. If something ever occurs to ruin this balance, two things may happen. A) Starchild theory. B) Chaos finally wins.

Thankfully neither will happen since this would mean the end of GW.

Anyways, back to the real topic. I'd say Necrons, to be entirely honest. If the C'Tan ever get around to caring, they could take out Terra with relative ease, or so it seems their technology says.

"From the fires of Betrayal unto the blood of revenge we bring the name of Lorgar, the Bearer of the Word, the favored Son of Chaos, all praise be given to him. From those that would not heed we offer praise to those who do, that they might turn their gaze our way and gift us with the Boon of Pain, to turn the Galaxy red with the blood, and feed the hunger of the Gods."

Between Alpha and Omega, and a little to the left

I doubt the Tyranids would be able to tackle Terra. In fact, I doubt they'd get pass Neptune. The Imperium would detect them long before they got into the solar system, and then every ship that could be called on would go at break neck speed to defend Terra. The Tyranids hives may be unstoppable on the ground , in space they are quite vulnerable, and would get vaporized by the sure wall of fire power that would be fired at them.

Vulnerable in space lolwut? Ever read anything about ship battles with Nids? They heal damage to themselves, or their 'hulls'. They fire boarding pods faster and don't require preparation for each, and have a near limitless supply. They shoot giant beams of acid that ruin ship hulls as well as exploding pods. Oh, and let's not forget that each time a ship actually DOES die, one nearby eats it and its power is used to make more weapons to fight and troops to drop. So yes, they're VERY vulnerable.

Plus, I'd estimate they have more ships in a Hive Fleet than all of Imperial Space. The only hope of saving Terra from the Great Devourer is simply star forts and laser platforms that have more firepower than a fleet of ships. Thankfully, they have tons in the Sol System.

Well, I meant vulnerable in comparison to their ground forces, although you do got a point.

I wonder if cyclonic torpedoes can be used on ships.

Any side which dares to attack Terra will have to face numerous star forts,Battlefleet Solar(the largest in the Imperium),thousands of space marines which will arrive to defends Sol system,Mars, massive population of Terra(according to German Lexicanum it is 100 trillion),Sisters of Battle etc.....
So that would discourage some attackers.
If Tyranids arrive before reinforcements Terra has a pretty high chance of survival,Necrons would own Terra and rest of Sol if they arrive with decent force, massive ork Waagh! could take it,Eldar could do it if they could drag their Craftworlds to Terra(full sector Battlefleet once attacked a Craftworld and they get owned by Eldar) otherwise they can't,Dark Eldar can't and they would not it,Tau can't do it and Chaos could if they arrive with all traitor legions and other chaos forces.

In order of theat to the Emprah:

Tyranids: who knows how many hive fleets are out there & they are drawn to the astronomicon. If they want something they'll take it.

Orks: Should a Warboss of the Emprahs caliber rise & unite the orks, none could stop them.

Necrons: They made planetfall on Mars, 'nuff said.

Those would be the big 3.

Actually, I'd have to say Chaos isn't much of a threat. The only way they could be is through taking a wormhole, such as the Boros Gate. This is basically impossible as it's a web-route that allows near-instant realspace time jumps through the other side. These wormholes connect to the Sol System so they can basically just jump through one end and come out of the other moments-hours later. So, while they may outnumber the system's fleet, they won't outnumber the arrival force. Besides, they're already incredibly well defended.

So yeah, I don't see Chaos doing anything unless they can break past the Cadian Gate with significant force and drive to Terra.

"From the fires of Betrayal unto the blood of revenge we bring the name of Lorgar, the Bearer of the Word, the favored Son of Chaos, all praise be given to him. With all the dookie done to terra (developing, the siege of the palace, the golden throne), had it been a tomb world they would have known a LONG time ago, but yea the Necrons are definatley up there but I put tyranids ahead of them because the Necrons seem more interested in Mars where the bugs are drawn to terra like a moth to the bug zapper due to the astronomicon.
