I've been looking through the collecters range recently, and you know what-I've found I like it. Okay the sculpts may not be as great as more "Modern" ones, but there's loads of charasmatic pieces, and I think they deserve more recognition than they get. So this is just a passing enquiry really; does anyone use a lot of collecters models, and which ones your favourite? I buy pretty much every special release or limited miniature available, but not too much from the general collectors range on the website.

Recently, I have bought myself lots of old models, for a fraction of price compared to new plastics. For example, one of my Warriors of Chaos armies has a unit of 20 Chaos Warriors where newest model is dated 1988, some 15 3rd edition Chaos Knights with metal horses and a unit of C20 Trolls from 1984. Overall, the whole Chaos army contains models from at least 5 if not 6 editions of Warhammer. However, I don't have any super rare stuff, which I could name as collector's miniatures.

In my blood Angels army, I've got a bunch of "collectors" stuff.
Of course when I bought it, they just called it warhammer 40k.
In the new IG force I'm building I am planning to include these two "ogryn" figures http://www.solegends.com/marauder/mm42ogres.htm
The two in the middle. The problem is that they will have to be converted to have ripper guns, and the figs are so old/rare, that I almost don't want to modify them.

If by "collectors" you mean "old" I own, buy and use quite a lot. Hell, a lot of it I bought when it was brand new. Stuff specifically for collecting like Black Library miniatures I don't tend to use for much, but anything that comes on a regular slottabase is used for playing.

I use several miniatures that are older than some members of Dakka. I also use several models that I'm not quite sure what they are. My Brettonian army was a deliberate attempt to collect a force of the Perrys late 90's models and I use them to game with....

Well as far as their 'Collector's Range' goes, I have the Marine Casualties and the two Guard Tank Crew guys. And I have a stack of old 2nd Ed and even some RT-era models.
And I have stacks of the Ltd. Ed. stuff, like the Skullz Ultramarine Standard Bearer, those At East Guardsmen, the Guard Army Box Standard Bearer, Marine Army Box marine w/Storm Bolter, the full Adeptus Mechanicus unit, and so on.

I've a large amount of 2nd Edition 40K stuff:
-Whole bunch of Marines including chaplain, librarian, scouts, tac squads.
None of these see any use though, because I don't play marines.
-Old ork warboss, deffskull boyz, deathskull kustom kombi weapon boyz, gorkamorka boyz and nobz, trukks, bikes, old school kommandos, old school gretchin (as in, the old plastics). All of these see use.
For my dwarves, I've the old (5th-6th edition) bolt throwers, and the metal miners, as well as the "dwarves of legend" who see use as part of my longbeard unit, or warmachine crews. A couple of old thunderers too.
Orcs and Goblins, it's mostly the old goblins from 5th edition I quite like the old goblins, not so much the old orcs.
Lizardmen, old (5th edition) saurus, which I quite like, old skinks with shortbows, old stegadon, old slaan mage priest, and 5th edition Terradons (which I prefer to the modern ones) and a 5th editon kroxigor. I don't play with these much anymore, but I would use all of the models if I did.

I have a 2nd edition Necron Army. Most of my Marines and Chaos Marines are second-edition as well.
I have no idea what GW are listing as 'Collectors Models' these days, but going by the model in the original post, it's still their catch-all for 'models we no longer actively make, but that were in normal production last edition...'
In which case there's probably quite a few sitting around the cabinet or the 'to-be-painted' crate.
For actual limited editions (in which category I would probably include the 'web exclusive' models that they sell from time to time) I have a lot of them... I was collecting them all, but cash-restraints (and lsing interest in 40K halfway through 4th edition) put a bit of a crimp on that.

My Guard army is Steel Legion, so that's all current vehicles and then "collectors range" metal infantry, including "inquisitorial" storm troopers for my command squads.
My Chaos army has been built over a decade and a half and has all sorts of stuff including RT era "chaos renegades" with heavy/special weapons, and late RT era berzerkers and noise marines (the ones with mohawks and guitars).

Why did the berzerker cross the road?

If "Collectors" = OOP, then: - my entire Eldar army is Collectors, with all original 2E models. I think the newest models in the range are the Avatar and the Fire Prism. That means my Aspects are 2 generations behind current. - my Guard infantry are mostly 2E Tallarns, with some matched 2E Cadians and 3E Storms. My armor is converted from the 2E stuff as well, aside from new Valk & supers. - my SM have the old 2E metal Dreads, but are otherwise current tech plastic. - I still own a squad of Dark Eldar. I think they're OOP. Note: a *LOT* of my stuff simply isn't available by GW anymore. Try finding the original GK Termies, for example...

I've a ton of OOP models, but since GW NZ got their act together and started letting you order from the website to the store and pay at the point of sale, I've ordered a ton of bitz and collectors range things. Some of my favs:

-Necromunda The Caller
-Emperor dragon
-Grot tekkies
-Forest Goblin Warboss on giant spider

I wish GW would stop using the term collector to mean "Out of print horrible masses of pewter models"
Most of them are such garbage I couldnt imagine using them on a table top.. If they were CURRENT quality of sculpts but had OLDER style armor and weapons.. okay that would be cool
But they arent, I think I just sold them all on ebay or they're in a box in the basement somewhere never to be seen again.. At the end of the day they're all just models, and most are excessively subpar (Better sculpts than the current DE tho)

Going into specifics:
I have 6 Platoons of Guard. 2 of them are the newer plastics, the the rest are divided between old metal Cadian (2), Tallarn (1) and Mordian (1).
I have a company of 2nd Ed Marines, half a company of RT/2nd Ed Terminators (all metal).
I have about 150 Genestealers or which most are the original. I have about 60 Tyranid Warriors of which half of them are the old 2nd Ed plastics (or 2nd Ed metals).
My Chaos and Necron stuff is newer.

Most of the "Collectors editions" were garbage at the time, and no one bought them. some of them were good, but as compaired to most of the range at the time, you are seeing the sloppy seconds of the so called "Collectors" marketing ploy to justify charging two to three times as much for medeicochr mini's that at the time came in blister packs of 2 to 3.
BTW, what does it say when my local shop still has a few of these guys still in blisters on the wall?
