I was looking at old 1st ed Wh40k: Rogue Trader materials online and came across this old ad for Iron Claw space pirates (attached below). The Iron Claw have some relation to Squats, just to put things in perspective...yeah, it's old.

At 1st glance, these are some typical Rogue Trader miniatures, back when Rick Priestley described Wh40k as "science fantasy." Everyone was like a fantasy RPG character, but with laser rifles and rad-to-the-max names like "Banzai Jones."

Then I saw these blue guys, specifically Zandar, Colonel Vlad, and Ooglorg the Cruel. What, in the Emperor's name, are they? I googled and searched these forums, but couldn't find mention of them. It's a curious relic from a lost time that I'm becoming increasingly obsessed with.

I think they're Pan Fo...

"From the fires of Betrayal unto the blood of revenge we bring the name of Lorgar, the Bearer of the Word, the favored Son of Chaos, all praise be given to him. From those that would not heed we offer praise to those who do, that they might turn their gaze our way and gift us with the Boon of Pain, to turn the Galaxy red with the blood, and feed the hunger of the Gods."

More than likely some sort of barbaric abhuman race, or just an alien race which isn't on the Imperiums threat radar who shares common goals with human space pirates...

Once more down to the beach, dear friends, once more,
To drown our sorrows with our English beer!
In peace there's nothing so becomes a man
As modest stillness and humility;
But when the blast of alcohol blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the tiger:
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood.

Don't worry. They clearly already did this with the Tau.

Whats with the tau hate...

Anyway, probably a random alien race that has no notable accomplishments so we haven't heard of them.

I would guess a really messed up early version of the Tau, since in early Tau fluff it referred to them being pirates and not the super-advanced psuedo-religious right-wingers they are today.

These are Rogue Trader era minis, way before 'munda. another characterful collection of minis that were ignored by gamers the first time around and have now fallen by the wayside.

I reckon if you search enough around ebay you could find some.

Use em as mutants, renegade guard, or indeed in Necromunda.

Perhaps there is an explanation in WD 93 (September 1987). Apparently there was an ad or display of some of these minis in that issue.

http://www.solegends.com/ironclaw/index.htm

The slotta base insert is no help. It just has the word "Mercenary" inscribed on it.

This road leads to madness. Citadel used to make a lot of creative figures which had no relation to any games. The minis preceeded the rules back then and many minis never had rules. You were actually supposed to use them for other designers' games or make up your own house rules. Ooooooo, heresy!

The secret to painting a really big army is to keep at it. You can't reach your destination if you never take any steps.

Early Tau fluff? I call shenanigans.

All your responses have been enlightening and entertaining. I'll take these ideas for putting together a Killteam in the new Battle Missions book, using the IG codex, for an Iron Claw space pirate crew. Thanks a lot.

I think the link to the WD section gave the answer.

In warhammer fantasy section "Iron claw goblins"

Look at these guys. They all have goblin features. I would guess they were an early version of a roving group of orkz/goblins or a man+ork/goblin mongrel people.

In the embrace of the great Nurgle, I am no longer afraid, for with His pestilential favour I have become that which I once most feared: Death.
