@ Ynneadwraith: Cheers, mate!

So here's a small update for today: I've wanted to build a vexillarius for my first squad of 30k World Eaters for a while now, but the backpack-mounted vexilla design didn't do much for me. Then I happened upon Augustus b'Raass excellent assault squad Vexillarius here, and fell in love: I really like the way the standard recalls influences from ancient Roman Legions, which certainly seems fitting for the Legiones Astartes. At the same time, there is also something slightly totemic about the design, which fits the increasingly brutal nature of the World Eaters. So I took influences from this piece to build my vexillarius, trying to put my own spin on things. Here he is:

Unlike Augustus, I was actually too cheap to use the Custodian banner pole, so I improvised my own version with the bits I had. The shield itself will end up bearing a heraldic device (a lefion badge, for instance). That way I'll be able to use the same basic design for each vexilla, should I end up building more squads, while also having a chance of customising each one into an individual totem, if you will. This is a great fit for the kind of look I am after for my World Eaters: One that is not nearly as uniform as your standard Heresy era legion army, with warplate cobbled together from different marks and trophies that show the World Eaters' beginning descent. At the same time, however, the more regimented, uniform roots are still visible.

Another thing I really wanted to incorporate was a head with a skull cap, something I've seen on Duncan Rhodes' Sons of Horus in WD a couple of years ago, as well as in Apologist's Iron Warriors: I think it works really well with Mk. 3 armour, making it look like the armour is so ancient that you actually have to wear the cap as some kind of separate conduit layer underneat the helmet. Please ignore the Inquisitorial =][= on the model's forehead, btw -- it still needs to be filled in with GS.

So here's the model with a couple of its squad mates:

Hey everyone, a small update for today: Thinking about how to paint my FW Angron model (the third model for my Loyalty and Treachery vow) has unexpectedly lead to a minor breakthough on another project, namely to convert yet another version of Angron based on the freebie Slaughterpriest that came with the first issue of the "new" White Dwarf.

Now my idea was to create a "missing link", so to speak, between Forgeworld's version of Angron (showing him in the latter stages of the Great Crusade) and my early gladiatorial take on the Primarch:

As always, let me know what you think!

That is such an awesome conversion!
I have that freebie priest lying around somewhere..
If you could tell me how you did that conversion that'd be sweet!

Thanks, man! There are some fairly detailed conversion notes on the model starting on this page.

A word of warning, however: This model wasn't based on the freebie Slaughterpriest that came with that one issue of WD, but rather with the alternate version.

That being said, if you want to see what an Angron conversion based on the freebie model looks like, there's one on the previous page

Hope this helps!

Cheers for the feedback, guys!

@ evildrcheese, tinfoil & Azazelx: Thanks a lot!

@ Kurnost: BA-DUM TISH!

@ Tactical_spam:

So here's another update: I’ve been far from idle on the hobby front, and possibly the most crucial hobby-related thing to happen last week were a couple of job-related trips to Hanover which provided me with the perfect opportunity for making some much needed purchases at a local FLGS:

With my supplies thus replenished, I think I’ll soon be able to start painting my recent Angron kitbash (hence all of the metallic colours). I also finally picked up a box of the Aos Blood Warriors, mainly for conversion fodder, really. And indeed, one of the fantastic helmets from the kit finally served as the perfect choice for Lorimar’s second in command, First Hunter Alrik Skarn:

This guy was originally my first really involved conversion after getting back into the hobby after a long hiatus (more than a year before I even started this blog, actually): I converted him during the first days of 2011, and have kept tinkering on him time and time again in the years since. But at long last, he now has just about the perfect helmet, so I think I can finally consider this conversion finished — phew!

And while the Blood Warriors are basically the perfect conversion resource for creating elaborate Khornate conversions for 40k, my next attempt at putting the various bits to good use actually involved creating a very early mockup for a 30k World Eater — go figure!

Does anyone have an idea who this might be. I’ll give you a hint: He’s not really a member of Lorimar’s 4th assault company, but rather a bit of a “guest star”, so to speak…

I have also finally managed to put some paint on the next member of my squad of tactical veterans, the Astartes bearing a massive and brutal looking autogun, to be precise:

Now the first draft version of the model still had a standard Mk. 3 helmet, but then I saw Nemac Vradon’s fantastic conversion of Uzas (of First Claw fame) using one of the FW World Eaters helmet to great effect, and so I allowed myself a small indulgence and ordered a single head from a bitz-seller to give my model that little bit of extra oomph.

The model also features a shout out to one of my favourite 30k World Eaters armies: Mr. Poom’s World Eaters occasionally feature weapon casings in the Iron Warriors-styled hazard stripe design, and I included a variant of the design on the backup chainsword mag-locked to the legionary’s armour:

So yeah, it might be slow work – in keeping with my general laziness – but my small collection of 30k World Eaters keeps expanding one model at a time — not too long now, and I might actually end up with a full squad! Shocking, I know…

As always, let me know what you think!

Good to see from you again, and now that you've got the paints it's nice to know we will finally see the next Angron(s) of yours in color
As for the conversions, Skarn looks great as he has a diorama-like dynamic, the pose and the style are reminiscent of this artwork imo
Spoiler:
Perhaps if he was looking a little bit lower?
Now the fot the 30k guys, mr autocannon is awesome and that helmet fits very well with the rest of the squad, especially the beheader. and the conversion looks suspiciosly like a younger version of Kharn.
All in all great work

Thanks a lot, guys! There's no fooling you guys either -- yeah, that's definitely a younger version of the 8th Captain

Speaking of the younger Kharn, I have been working on cleaning up that particular conversion a bit. Take a look:

@ Legio Ultra: Dude, I didn't even know that piece of art -- thanks for sharing! Almost makes me want to create a Daemon Prince based on that piece. Now why doesn't GW offer a heavily armoured DP like that? It would make a great alternative to the ones they have on offer.

As you can see, I actually switched his weapons around, which arguably brings him much closer to both the classic and new 40k incarnations of the character -- it always seemed like a weird part of the FW model to me that he was holding Gorechild in the "wrong hand", especially since even Angron wields it with his left.

This also gave me the opportunity to swap in a wonderfully clunky CSM plasma pistol -- I realise that 30k plasma pistols have this "Martian Deathray" look, but I prefer a weapon that looks like it could actually be used to clobber an opponent over the head -- plus it's, once again, closer to classic 40k Khârn's pistol. So it should really be no surprise that I automatically settled on a pose that recalls the classic metal model as well. I really like the pose so far.
However, some fellow forumites over at B&C pointed out that they preferred the original pose with its more grounded look. So I tried lowering the axe arm a bit, and I might actually like the result even better:

Cheers for the feeback, guys!

I've actually tried several versions of the pose, but I just really like the pistol arm that way, as though he had just turned somebody to slag with a well planned plasma shot. As for the axe arm, virtually all of the feedback I received was in favour of the lowered position, so I think I'll be going with that option. k0nahrik over at The B&C basically summed it up perfectly:

I gotta say, he's looking amazing now!
As for the tabard, I actually think it fits perfect. I think it adds to the 'angry yet in control' look. As if he's a worshipper of khorne but hasn't completely lost his mind yet, like he can still assess a battlefield strategically and still wear cosmetic items(the tabard) that set him apart from the rest of the infantry - he's still above them, he's not another screaming angry face in the crowd yet. Not to mention - the motion on the tabard adds perfectly to the motion of the model - he's just finished off an enemy, now he's swirling around and quickly assessing the battlefield for a moment, identifying his next target, thinking like a commander - then he's off and charging again.

Oh, and I was also able to finish yet another model. Surprise, surprise!

Hamund

"The Mournful", IVth assault company Secutor, XII Legio Astartes

“You ask if this is what I wanted for myself, remembrancer? If this is what I dreamed of?
Who could ever dream of a life such as the one we lead and crave to do as we do?
No, I did not wish for this life. But it was this or the fleshmarket at Kalekka, and a choice like that is no choice at all."

Secutor Hamund

This guy was originally converted as a member of my 40k World Eaters, but has now found a new - and arguably more fitting - home with the army's fledgling 30k incarnation: His patched-together suit of mongrel-plate really gives him a suitably World Eater-ly look, and the smaller Khornate symbols scattered over the model could be seen as the War God's influence slowly beginning to manifest during the latter stages of the Heresy.

Now painting Hamund was really quite a slog, both because the conversion was pretty messy, using some very beat-up parts, and because the arms came from a WFB champion of Khorne that was re-released as an early Finecast piece (i.e. lots of bubbles and warping). With those factors in mind, I am pretty happy with the finished model!

So, another update, another round of "family photos":

@ Tactical_Spin: Almost the entire shield arm, except for the shoulder pad, came from this Khornate Champion/Exalted Deathbringer.

So for today, here are some scale comparison pictures with my recent 30k Khârn conversion:

First up, here’s a picture showing my 30k Khârn next to a standard 30k World Eater and to the – rather massive – new plastic 40k version of the character:

As you can see, he’s about as tall as a standard Marine (the guy on the left appears taller because there’s quite a bit of basing material underneath his feet), yet at the same time, the combination of the Mk. III legs and the beefed out torso give him a slightly more massive look, which I think really fits the character and serves as a hint at the even more massive, imposing figure Khârn will have grown into, probably thanks to the war god’s influence, by the 41st millennium.

As a fun detail, the press-molded symbol on his backpack actually prompted me to add the same detail to 40k Khârn, both as a piece of continuity, but also because that empty panel on the back of the backpack really bothered me, and this seemed like the perfect solution:

I really wanted my own 30k Khârn to be like a bit of a missing link between the other versions, and I think this part of the project has been a success: If you look closely, you’ll see several elements on the model that point to the different incarnations of the character, both in 40k and in 30k:

Oh, and while we are at it, here’s a picture showing every version of Khârn currently in my possession, including the true scale-ish custom Khârn I created back in 2014:

Come to think of it, this seems like the perfect opportunity to give that particular model a bit of extra airtime, because I am still pretty pleased with it, and I think it managed to hold up, even when compared to the new “official” 40k Khârn:

A closer look at the model can be found here, in case you are interested.

@ Nevelon: It's okay, mate! I won't tell the Chaplain

@ JustaerinAtTheWall: The small icon is actually a detail that appears on the WFB Chaos Lord on Manticore (on one of the capes, to be precise). Since it really looks like a World Eaters legion symbol, I made a simple pressmold for it that I now use to create some extra decoration for my World Eaters characters

In the meantime, it has occured to me that I have one week left to paint an Angron model for the Loyalty and Treachery event over at The Bolter & Chainsword, and I really want to finish my latest, converted plastic Angron, so I devoted a bit of time this past weekend to sorting out the last parts of the model in need of some cleanup. Take a look:

As you can see, Angron's now holding that tangle of viscera he has in the Wayne England artwork, for one. I have also built up the cape around his shoulders with some GS, adding a layer of tinfoil in between the model and the new GS parts, so the two parts are still easy to separate during the painting process. Here's a closer look at the cape:

And here's a picture showing how I've ended up with two separate parts that still fit together perfectly:

And finally, here's a closer look at the base Angron will be standing on:

Everything's been undercoated, and painting will begin (and, hopefully, also conclude) in the next few days. Wish me luck!

It's probably just the lighting, but Angron's gold armor looks really bronze. Other than that the model looks good.

Regarding the bronze effect, I am actually really happy to hear that, because while my original plan was to simply use GW's Custodian recipe on the armour, I eventually decided to go for a more bronze/brazen look, both because it's a bit less vibrant and more workmanlike and because it fits the description of Angron in Betrayer, where his armour is definitely more bronze than gold. So I am glad if the effect comes across in the finished model!

In the meantime, I have managed to finish the base:

Alas poor Hjortulf, we barely knew ye...

So here's another mockup of the (still PIP) model, taken in proper daylight:

And while the model's back will end up being almost completely covered by the cape, I did of course completely paint it. Here's a photo serving as proof that I didn't skimp on my homework:

Wish me luck for the last round of finishing touches, and let me know what you think!
